Gaming hours and genre effects on memory, reaction times, attention, logical reasoning and time management skills
The study aimed to investigate the relationship between the genre and hours spent gaming and cognitive skills (short term memory, time management, attention, logical reasoning, and reaction times). There were 61 participants who played less than 1 hour (N=26), 1-15 hours (N=25) or more than 15 hours (N=10). The genre breakdown of the participants is as follows; 8 action-adventure, 1 fighting, 14 first-person shooter, 2 MMO, 3 platformers, 8 puzzle, 5 roleplaying, 2 sports, 18 played no games. The Time Management Personal Assessment, Stroop, a simple digit span test and Wisconsin card sorting test was used. The study was a cross-sectional analysis, correlational, between groups and quasi-experimental. No significant difference was found between genre and hours spent gaming on time management, attention, short term memory and logical reasoning. There was a significant difference between reaction times on the genre and hours spent gaming. Gamers, specifically first-person shooter gamers, had faster reaction times
The role of materialism and cynicism on well-being
This study investigated the role of materialism and cynicism on well-being (subjective happiness, spirituality, hedonia, eudaimonia, and burnout) in Ireland. Furthermore, spirituality was measured rather than religion. A quantitative mixed correlational, cross-sectional using online survey was utilized to collect data from 103 individuals. Multiple regression revealed that more cynical participants had higher levels of depersonalization; individuals with higher levels of materialism success reported higher levels of depersonalization; emotional exhaustion decreased with age; increased levels of materialism happiness increased emotional exhaustion; and higher materialistic participants were less spiritual. Correlation analysis found that age negatively correlated with materialism happiness; spirituality positively correlated with happiness; and hedonia positively correlated with eudaimonia. Results of a one-way ANOVA found that higher spiritual participants were happier and exhibited higher levels of eudaimonia. Findings could lead to the inclusion of health programs in schools to reduce materialism, the inclusion of spirituality into health care, and fostering eudaimonia
Effect of Employee Stock Ownership Plan on Employee Productivity and Employee Satisfaction Related to the Tourism Industry in Sri Lanka
The study investigates how Employee Stock Ownership Plans (ESOPs) affect worker productivity and happiness in Sri Lanka's tourist sector. To investigate the relationship between ESOPs and employee outcomes, quantitative analysis using the KMO test, Cronbach's alpha, descriptive statistics, correlation, and regression analysis was carried out using a sample of 190 participants from the tourism sector. The results show that ESOPs have a considerable beneficial influence on worker happiness and productivity, which is consistent with previous research on ESOPs in a variety of organizational settings. It also examines the various effects on employee outcomes of participation rate, ownership stake, stock price increase, pay level, and retirement preparation. In light of Sri Lanka's tourism business, the results provide insightful information about the ability of ESOPs and related elements to influence employee performance and well-being, even if they acknowledge certain limitations, such as a smaller sample size and an industry-specific focus. Our findings provide a thorough grasp of the ways in which ownership programs and associated components affect employee dynamics and have consequences for organizational strategy and regulatory frameworks
A Qualitative Investigation into Causes of the Failure of Necessity-driven Retail Micro-SMEs in Harare, Zimbabwe
Business failure is a topical issue in academic circles as it represents the negation of the desired good which is business survival, growth, and contribution to the economy. It gains greater currency when the concerned ventures are necessity-based as they partly constitute the bracket of biggest contributors to economies. With a particular focus on retail ventures, this study aims to establish why failure is happening in this sector. Through a qualitative study that employed semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis to collect and interpret the data, the analysis showed that a combination of 12 factors is precipitating the failure of these ventures. These are ignorance of trends, lack of collaboration with competitors, lack of business and management skills, lack of strategy, lack of creativity, high operational costs, market saturation, low demand, economic stability, competition, and restrictive legislation. These factors show that the concerned retailers fall short of being true entrepreneurs
Detection of Hindi Spam Emails Using NLP
In modern times, the business and education sectors embrace email for collaboration and interaction. Email is a fast and easy means of communicating for both quick and prolonged periods of time. Email is growing into an effective way of exchanging information, which results in unsolicited bulk or spam. Such emails harvest sensitive information from individuals or business-related facts, as well as cultivate pornographic material or marketing services. Since the Hindi and English languages are so dissimilar, detecting spam emails in Hindi is challenging. These tactics are broadly characterized as context-based or non-context-based. We analyzed and assessed many research materials in this paper. Previous research papers’ findings assist in the development of spam detection algorithms for a variety of platforms, including social media, email, and text messaging. This project aims to increase the precision and efficacy of spam identification in order to improve user experiences, defend users from potential threats or malicious activities, and keep online communication channels safe. Researchers have widely employed Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to detect spam emails in the English language during the previous five years. These methods attempt to analyze the textual content of emails in order to identify components that can discriminate between legitimate and spam messages. The aim of this research is to develop an efficient system for identifying and filtering spam emails in Hindi using similar techniques. It is necessary to have a reliable Hindi spam detection system. At least research available in the Hindi language was a major challenge in this field. We proposed a system that reliably detects Hindi spam emails using NLP. We analyzed and studied multiple machine learning techniques such as Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Decision Tree, Naive Bayes, and Support Vector Classifier. Ultimately choosing logistic regression to construct the system. The system provides an average accuracy of 97.72% by implementing the K-fold Cross Validation technique
The variety of inner speech-refining links between inner speech and depression, anxiety, and stress
Mental health is a global issue that impacts people physically and emotionally. Current treatments have limitations, therefore the search for new treatments and preventions is necessary. Inner speech's role in consciousness is immense but it is hard to measure empirically. This study explored the relationship between inner speech and mental health conditions (levels of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms). The findings showed a negative correlation between positive/regulative inner speech and depression symptoms. Evaluative and critical inner speech had a moderate correlation with stress levels. Hearing other people's voices in the inner speech was significantly related to anxiety symptoms. Qualitative analysis revealed that neutral inner speech was common, while regulatory inner speech helped manage emotions. Critical and evaluative inner speech evoked negative emotions. These results support existing research and call for further investigation. Overall, inner speech has implications for mental well-being, and understanding its dynamics could improve treatment approaches and prevention
