    [Book Review] Free gifts: capitalism and the politics of nature

    In the pathbreaking and vital Free Gifts: Capitalism and the Politics of Nature, Alyssa Battistoni argues that capitalism fails to value nature and rather treats it like a ‘free gift’. Such free gifts are those things which are simultaneously incredibly useful yet not granted any economic value: wind powering sailing ships and turbines, fertile land and sunshine for agriculture, or housework and childcare. These gifts are never actually free but always paid for elsewhere – whether by the exploitation of workers, atmospheric pollution, the gendered character of reproductive labour, or the regenerative power of the biosphere. Battistoni shows how capitalism’s failure to value nature is not an accident or an unfortunate oversight but built into its structure and dynamics.</p

    Transcription termination counteracts DNA damage after WEE1 inhibition

    Transcription termination is a key regulatory step in transcription and a potential target for cancer therapy, but how it can be exploited for treatment is incompletely understood. Here we show that transcription termination plays a crucial role in mitigating DNA damage and cell death upon WEE1 inhibition by adavosertib. Depleting five different transcription termination factors (WDR82, PNUTS, XRN2, DDX5, or CPSF73) increased adavosertib-induced DNA damage in S-phase. Conversely, inhibiting active transcription with DRB or triptolide, or co-depleting CDC73, a component of the PAF1 transcription elongation complex, reduced such damage. Additionally, read-through transcription following WDR82 depletion was partially inhibited by co-depletion of CDC73, supporting that read-through transcription contributes to DNA damage in response to WEE1 inhibition. Moreover, combining adavosertib with the CPSF73 inhibitor JTE-607, an anticancer compound which promotes read-through transcription, increased DNA damage during S-phase. Elevated expression of CPSF73 is associated with aggressive disease in prostate cancer patients, and combining JTE-607 with adavosertib synergistically reduced prostate cancer cell survival. Our findings suggest that transcription termination helps prevent toxic conflicts between transcription and replication following increased replication initiation caused by WEE1 inhibition.</p

    Making omnichannel work: a dynamic capabilities roadmap for retail transformation

    Despite widespread adoption of omnichannel retailing, a strategy that delivers a seamless, high-quality customer journey across multiple retail channels, many firms struggle to translate omnichannel initiatives into sustained transformations. While firms increasingly invest in digital platforms, integrated fulfillment systems, and cross-channel customer experiences, these efforts frequently stall, fragment, or fail to scale. We argue that this happens because omnichannel success depends not on individual capabilities but on how the underlying organizational routines aggregate, coordinate, and endure over time. Drawing on dynamic capabilities theorizing, we identify where and why capability aggregation breaks down and demonstrate how retailers pursuing similar omnichannel strategies can end up with sharply different transformation trajectories. Briefly, omnichannel leaders embed and coordinate sensing, seizing, and transforming routines to learn, prioritize, and support continuous adaptation. Laggards rely on fragmented, function-bound initiatives that cannot be effectively sustained beyond the early implementation stage. By unpacking these differences, we advance omnichannel research and dynamic capabilities theorizing by clarifying how higher-order capabilities emerge, or fail to emerge, from microfoundational routines in complex, legacy-oriented contexts. For managers, the findings provide a diagnostic roadmap to identify capability bottlenecks and reposition omnichannel transformation as an ongoing capability rather than a one-time implementation.</p

    Decarbonisation as warfighting opportunity: military climate governance, the green transition and struggles for socio-ecological justice

    This thesis tends to the puzzle of present-day military climate governance and green transition projects among NATO and EU military sectors. I develop a geopolitical ecology analysis that juxtaposes military sectors’ narrative and practical emergence as socio-ecological stewards with the lifecycle harms of military-industrial and green-industrial power, capturing military sectors rather as socio-ecological predators. I find that military modes of socio-ecological governance are better understood in terms of militarism’s greening: a process by which military-industrial relations and rationalities are facilitated and normalised in the name of climate action, environmental sustainability and sustainable finance.Combining military climate policy analysis, military sector interviews and ethnographic fieldwork in military trade shows, I trace militarism’s greening across five dimensions: its narration; governance; technological making; financialisation; gendering and racialisation. Expanding extant critiques of military socio-ecological governance, I demonstrate how green militarism is rooted in strategic fictions that envision greener versions of NATO and EU armed forces and arms industries as guarantors and governors of security and sustainability amid global climate chaos. These fictions rest on green militarism’s foremost promise: that of growing while greening military capabilities through the lower-carbon enhancement of military power.Rather than mitigate social and ecological harms or prevent conflict, I argue that military climate and greening projects exacerbate socio-ecological collapse and turn socio-ecological care into a simultaneous battlefield and business opportunity; equating both security and sustainability with the production, practice and profiteering of imperially oriented military violence. As such, military socioecological governance reproduces the militarist, extractivist and masculinist subjects and conditions constitutive of today’s violent, imperial global order – at the expense of peace, people and planet. And yet, each site of harm found along militarism’s greening is also a site of continuous struggle, where peace, climate and justice movements prefigure feminist, anti-militarist and anti-imperial cosmologies of socio-ecological justice.</p

    Co-designing animated videos to explain large language models and their use in healthcare and research

    Introduction The increasing development of large language models (LLM) in healthcare research is taking place without patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE). Part of the challenge is the lack of accessible educational resources to promote literacy around LLMs. Methods We employed a co-design approach with 6 PPIE contributors from Tower Hamlets, London to develop educational animations about LLMs. We conducted 7 pilot sessions that included hands-on interactive activities to develop scripts and storyboards for the animations. Animations were external validated by additional PPIE groups and experts before professional animation production. Results Two accessible 2-minute animated videos were successfully co-designed in English and Bengali. One explains LLMs in the context of daily life and the second on LLMs in healthcare research. Both animations use a factory analogy to describe LLMs functionality while avoiding anthropomorphisation that could mislead audiences about LLMs inner workings and capabilities. Both animations are freely available for reuse. Discussion The co-design process allowed us to prioritise diverse PPIE voices throughout development, ensuring that animations are appropriate for a wide audience. Challenges included incorporating sometimes conflicting perspectives and achieving balanced portrayals of LLM benefits and risks. We hope these animations will support PPIE contributors to have a say in how LLMs are used in healthcare and research.</p

    COVID-19 and disruptions of trade credit along supply chains

    We show that the COVID-19 pandemic threatened the supply chains, as reflected by disruptions in the flow of trade credit in Europe. Countries with less stringent initial policy responses experienced greater disruptions. For the European countries in the top tercile of relaxedness in terms of initial government policies after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic, we estimate that for every €100M in sales, firms extended around €4.6M–€7.5M less credit compared to firms in countries with more stringent initial responses. Deviations from EU/WHO-recommended lockdown stringency seem to have created a public-health policy uncertainty effect. This uncertainty effect was most pronounced among downstream firms, where trade-credit disruptions were most severe.</p

    Rest in a warming workplace: resituating the science and policy of non‐work under climate change

    Rest is increasingly presented as a key solution to the challenge of rising workplace temperatures under climate change. Yet, despite this growing importance, the scientific literature often treats the relationship between rest and core temperature simplistically, viewing rest as a passive recovery tool essential for cooling the body and maintaining productivity. We frame this dominant approach as the ‘recovery‐productivity calculus’ that underpins current debates on rest‐based heat interventions, such as the Threshold Limit Values that allocate rest schedules in response to heat risk. This paper presents a critical review of rest under heat stress, arguing that the recovery‐productivity calculus overlooks the dynamic, subjective and political nature of rest in the context of heat stress. This oversight (or lacuna) stems from the history of modern heat stress research, where the dominance of military‐based research and laboratory studies replaced field‐based studies with workers, influencing insights on occupational heat stress. Furthermore, heat research bears parallels to the historical study of industrial fatigue, highlighting how productivity concerns may become dominant. Drawing from critical heat studies and the anthropology of work, we incorporate an analysis of power and subjectivity into the study of rest, considering two forms: planned breaks and self‐pacing. Our focus is to develop the question of rest not as secondary or residual within the heat‐work relation—as productivity‐recovery centred framings construe—but as a nuanced practice that actively informs the success of heat governance. As rest becomes an ever more important tool in the climate‐changed workplace, this paper provides a basis to understand the practices that underpin its heat mitigation capacity and seeks to inform the effective uptake of rest‐based interventions.</p
