    Recent Results on a Rb Pulsed Optically Pumped Clock for Space Applications

    We report on the recent characterization of a Rb microwave clock based on the pulsed optical pumping (POP) principle. The clock is developed in the frame of a INRIM-Leonardo collaboration intended to implement a highly stable and compact device for space applications. The physics package developed by Leonardo S.p.A. includes space-graded components, weights less than 4 kg and occupies only a 4-liters volume. It has been characterized with custom optics and electronics developed at INRIM laboratories. By taking advantage of advanced stabilization techniques for the laser and microwave pulses, this arrangement exhibits state-of-the-art short- and mid-term stability, reaching σ y (40000s) = 6×10 −16 (drift removed) for a 200000s run

    First experimental results of the cosmic time synchronizer for a wireless, precise, and perpetual time synchronization system

    In 2022, the idea of the cosmic time synchronizer (CTS) was proposed for a precise wireless synchronization of local clocks (<100 ns). Because CTS does not require critical timing information traffic among CTS sensors, the technique can be considered robust against jamming and spoofing. In this work, a small-scale CTS sensor network has been developed and tested for the first time. Good time synchronization performances were obtained for a short-haul configuration (30–35 ns (SD, 1 σ), over 50–60 m). Based on the results of this work, CTS could be potentially conceived as a ‘self-adjusting’ system, offering high level continuous (perpetual) performances, to be considered either as a backup chain for GPS disciplined oscillators (GPS DO), a standalone standard for frequency and time interval measurements, or as a tool for the dissemination of reference time scales to final users, with improved characteristics in terms of robustness and reliability

    Antioxidant properties of ferulic acid-based lipophenols in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions

    Butyl ferulate (BF) and octyl ferulate (OF) were investigated to enhance oxidative stability of 1.0% vegetable oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions at pH 3.5 and 7.0 at different concentrations (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mg/L of emulsion). Particle size distribution, droplet surface charge, hydroperoxides (PV), hexanal and nonanal were monitored for 14 days at 35 °C. Higher concentrations of BF and OF generated smaller particles at pH 7.0 but not at pH 3.5. Control showed the highest negative surface charge (−58.38 ± 0.31 mV, pH 7.0) compared to BF and OF (−46.71 ± 0.06 mV at levels >0.10 mg/L). Both alkyl ferulates counteracted lipid oxidation, especially at pH 3.5, where PV decreased up to 96% compared to the control and delayed hexanal and nonanal formation. A low content of lipophenols allowed to achieve a tremendous shelf-life extension, demonstrating that BF and OF could be of great interest for food application

    Questo rapporto raccoglie i risultati preliminari ottenuti nel progetto Dynametric INRIM ASF Metrology. Esso si prefigge di caratterizzare metrologicamente per via accelerometrica una macchina di misura a coordinate innovativa. Questa è rivolta ad applicazioni bidimensionali, o tridimensionali in cui la componente verticale è ridotta, a grande velocità. La configurazione innovativa e la grande velocità, cui necessariamente corrispondono grandi accelerazioni, sottopongono i carrelli mobili e la struttura ad importanti forze dinamiche, che si traducono in deformazioni e conseguenti errori di misura a coordinate. Mentre la caratterizzazione statica degli errori di geometria delle macchine a coordinate è materia consolidata in letteratura e nella pratica industriale, quella degli errori dinamici lo è assai meno ed è legata alla specifica configurazione della macchina. Scopo di questo rapporto è di caratterizzare dinamicamente una macchina di misura innovativa per via accelerometrica in modo idoneo non solo alla stima degli errori ma anche allo loro futura correzione in tempo reale. I risultati presentati sono preliminari e relativi ad un prototipo perché la macchina di misura definitiva e completa di tutti gli assi di misura non è ancora disponibile alla data di redazione di questo rapporto.This technical report summarises the preliminary results of the Dynametric INRIM ASF Metrology project. It aims at the metrological characterisation of an innovative coordinate measuring machine by accelerometry. The machine is intended for high speed bidimensional applications or tri dimensional when the vertical component is small. The innovative set up and the high speed result in strong accelerations and structure and carriages undergo severe dynamic stresses and the consequent deformations and coordinate measurement errors. The characterisation of static geometry errors of coordinate measuring machines is well established in the technical literature and industrial practice; on the contrary, that of dynamic errors is not and is related to the design of the individual machine. This reports aims at the dynamic characterisation of an innovative coordinate measuring machine by accelerometry in a way suitable not only to estimate but also to compensate the errors real time. The reported results are preliminary and related to a prototype because the definitive fully equipped machine is not available yet at the publication time of this report
