    Nitrogen uptake in riparian plant communities across a sharp ecological boundary of salmon density

    BioMed CentralBackground Recent studies of anadromous salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) on the Pacific Coast of North America indicate an important and previously unrecognized role of salmonid nutrients to terrestrial biota. However, the extent of this uptake by primary producers and consumers and the influences on community structure remain poorly described. We examine here the contribution of salmon nutrients to multiple taxa of riparian vegetation (Blechnum spicant, Menziesii ferruginea, Oplopanax horridus, Rubus spectabilis, Vaccinium alaskaense, V. parvifolium, Tsuga heterophylla) and measure foliar δ15N, total %N and plant community structure at two geographically separated watersheds in coastal British Columbia. To reduce potentially confounding effects of precipitation, substrate and other abiotic variables, we made comparisons across a sharp ecological boundary of salmon density that resulted from a waterfall barrier to salmon migration.FacultyReviewe

    Low-Complexity Distortionless Techniques for Peak Power Reduction in OFDM Communication Systems

    A high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) is one of the major drawbacks to using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. The three most effective distortionless techniques for PAPR reduction are partial transmit sequence (PTS), selective mapping (SLM), and tone reservation (TR). However, the high computational complexity due to the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) is a problem with these approaches. Implementation of these techniques typically employ direct computation of the IDFT, which is not the most efficient solution. In this paper, we consider the development and performance analysis of these distortionless techniques in conjunction with low-complexity IFFT algorithms to reduce the PAPR of the OFDM signal. Recently, proposed IFFT-based techniques are shown to substantially reduce the computational complexity and improve PAPR performance.FacultyReviewe

    Clutter Elimination and Harmonic Suppression of Non-Stationary Life Signs for Long-Range and Through-Wall Human Subject Detection Using Spectral Kurtosis Analysis (SKA)-Based Windowed Fourier Transform (WFT) Method

    Life sign detection is important in many applications, such as locating disaster victims. This can be difficult in low signal to noise ratio (SNR) and through-wall conditions. This paper considers life sign detection using an impulse ultra-wideband (UWB) bio-radar with an improved sensing algorithm for clutter elimination, harmonic suppression and random-noise de-noising. To improve detection performance, two filters are used to improve SNR of these life signs. The automatic gain method is performed in fast time to improve the respiration signals. The spectral kurtosis analysis (SKA)-based windowed Fourier transform (WFT) method and an accumulator in the frequency domain are used to provide two distance estimates between the radar and human subject. Further, the accumulator can also provide the frequency estimate of the respiration signals. These estimates are used to determine if a human is present in the detection environment. Results are presented which show that the range and respiration frequency can be estimated accurately in low signal to noise and clutter ratio (SNCR) environments.
