    Hydrogen has risen as a sustainable and efficient energy carrier option in reducing environmental pollution, and is seen as a potential solution for the current energy crisis. Hydrogen production via water decomposition is a potential process for direct utilization of nuclear thermal energy to increase efficiency and thereby facilitate energy savings. While many of the available renewable energy resources are limited due to their reliability, quality, quantity and density, nuclear energy has the potential to contribute a significant share of energy supply with very limited impacts to climate change. The proposed model in this study is an integrated hydrogen production system combining both nuclear and solar energy sources. This integrated system includes storage of hydrogen and its conversion to electricity by a regenerative fuel cell system when needed. There are many matured water splitting processes that can be linked with the nuclear and solar energy sources to decompose water to its constituents, among which is hydrogen. In this regard, a comparative study is carried out to evaluate an optimal and feasible hydrogen production/storage process with a regenerative fuel cell that can be linked to this integrated system. Studies conducted here on hydrogen production processes show the thermochemical water decomposition to be the better option for producing hydrogen, comparing to electrolysis, due to its high efficiencies and low costs. Energy and exergy efficiencies of various hydrogen production processes, and fuel cell systems are evaluated and compared. Also, a parametric study is conducted on these efficiencies to see the effect of various operating conditions

    Personnel contributions to UN and non-UN peacekeeping missions A public goods approach

    Based on spatial panel regressions for 1990-2012, this article draws publicness differences between peacekeeping personnel contributions to UN and non-UN peacekeeping operations. The analysis shows that UN missions are much less responsive to personnel spillovers, derived from other contributors' peacekeepers, than is the case of non-UN missions. UN peacekeeping missions display either no response or free riding to these personnel spillovers, while non-UN missions indicate spillover complementarity. Moreover, a number of controls distinguish the two kinds of peacekeeping, where non-UN missions display income normality and UN missions' deployments increase with the number of concurrent peacekeeping missions. The latter suggests that some countries specialize in supplying UN peacekeepers as a money-making venture. The positive response to the population variable supports this conjecture for UN missions, because a greater population base provides the recruits for peacekeeping operations. Our spatial empirical analysis accounts for the endogeneity of peacekeeper spillovers. The article concludes with a host of robustness tests that account for the alternative classes of peacekeepers, African Union and ECOWAS missions, and other empirical variants

In other words, genre is the main determiner which decides the purposes of the book whether it is a scientific book for an educational purpose, or a fiction book for an entertainment purpose, or a psychological book for a self-development purpose. In addition, each book requires a certain method of translation which comes within the two extremes of translation: literal translation and free translation. This study is about how text function plays a vital role in determining the degree of freedom in translation. An assessment of two translated books is conducted based on the methods of translation used: one of a scientific book and one for a psychological book for educational and self-development purposes. The book لاتحزن (Do not be Sad), is used as an example of the Arabic version of self-help book, and Persuasion is used as the English version of self-help book. Parts of the self-help book, Persuasion, are translated and assessed in terms of the different degrees of freedom in translation (Two other books are mentioned in the thesis, as examples of assessment of degrees of freedom in translation). These translations are carried out by a number of faculty members at Effat University, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and then analyzed in order to come up with a coherent method of translation which can be used as a guide in translating self-help books. This study concludes that within the two extremes of translation methods come various degrees of freedom in translation. Thesis advisor is Dr. Akmal Abdelfatah. Soft and hard copy available.Most developing areas are suffering from traffic congestion problems. The majority of traffic delays in urban areas occur at traffic signals. Over the past few decades, several transportation agencies have been applying geometric changes, through adding more lanes, to signalized intersections in an effort to reduce delays. Because of the limited availability of right-of-way, many transportation agencies have started using unconventional traffic control systems for intersections to improve signal efficiency and reduce overall delays. Common unconventional left-turn control types such as the right-turn followed by a U-turn (RTUT) and a U-turn followed by a right-turn (UTRT) basically eliminate direct left-turn (DLT) movements at the intersection by rerouting left-turning vehicles away from the main junction. Following any of these alternatives reduces the number of phases and the average delay per vehicle at the main junction. However, it adds some additional travel time for left-turning vehicles and some delays at the U-turn locations. This thesis presents a parametric study to evaluate the impact of replacing direct left-turns with U-turns (either RTUT or UTRT). The main goal of this study is to determine the traffic operational performance of each alternative under different traffic conditions. Traffic signal evaluation (Synchro) and simulation (Vissim) tools were utilized in this study to determine the optimized signal timings and evaluate intersection performance for each left-turn control type, respectively. Many parameters were considered, such as the total traffic volume on the intersection, the percentage of vehicles on each approach, the turning percentage for each movement, and the U-turn locations. It was concluded that unconventional left-turn control types have less delay and travel time compared to the DLT, when the U-turn locations are 200 meters away from the main intersection. Also, the right-turn followed by a U-turn showed superior performance over the other left-turn control types, when the U-turn locations are 100 meters away from the main intersection. Furthermore, it is not recommended to have the U-turns at a distance less than 100 meters when using unconventional left-turn control types because of the queue spillback effect. This is further supported by data collected through a survey about transliteration and the National Studies curriculum for public and private schools in the United Arab Emirates education system.     A Novel Miniaturized Printed Elliptical Nested Fractal Multiband Antenna for Energy Harvesting Applications

    This paper presents the design, optimization, simulation, and fabrication of a novel printed elliptical nested fractal (planar) antenna for multiband operation. The proposed antenna is intended to function as the receptor element in RF energy harvesting applications. The simple microstrip structure and the compact size of the antenna ease its fabrication and allow it to be integrated with other electronic circuitry. It consists of nested elliptical structures fed by 50 Ohms microstrip line with complementary elliptical ground along with rectangular ground plane. The added Hilbert structures at both sides of the antenna feeding line on the top layer enhance its performance to operate in multi frequency bands. This antenna exhibits good radiation and reflection characteristics at 910 MHz (global system mobile GSM 900), 2.4 GHz (Bluetooth/WLAN), 3.2 GHz (Radiolocation, 3G), 3.8 GHz (for LTE, 4G), and additional 5 GHz band (Wi-Fi signals). The overall dimension of antenna is 41 mm (width) × 44 mm (length) × 1.778 mm (thickness). To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the widest bandwidth antenna to be developed at these small dimensions covering major standards from 900 MHz up to 6 GHz for electromagnetic energy harvesting applications

    Has the Financial Crisis had an Adverse Effect on Bank Competition?

    This article investigates whether the recent financial crisis has had any adverse impact on bank competition for 24 emerging and 25 advanced countries with large and small-size banks over the sample period 2001-2010. The H-statistic advocated by Panzar and Rosse (1987) is employed as the measure of competition. We find that the adverse effect of the financial crisis on bank competition seems to be trivial and on the contrary, competition is marginally boosted during the crisis period. This applies to both types of economies, irrespective of bank size. This suggests that currently ongoing policies to avert further crises in the banking sector have not exerted so great an adverse effect on competition. In the individual countries' study, the recent global financial crisis, however, led to a significant decline in competition in some countries
