Optimization of Natural Gas Liquid (NGL) Recovery processes

Thesis advisor is Dr. Rachid Chebbi. Soft and hard copy available.Natural gas liquid (NGL) is mainly composed of ethane. The demand for ethane is increasing continuously as it is used in the manufacturing of ethylene. A review of the major turboexpansion processes is provided in addition to some related work on the optimization of ethane recovery and profit obtained with several turboexpansion processes. The Cold Residue Recycle (CRR) process was simulated on Aspen HYSYS using lean and rich feed streams at three different demethanizer pressures, namely: 100 psia, 215 psia and 450 psia. The present work aimed at investigating the effect of the split ratios and other design variables on the profit. The optimization of the profit revealed that the Gas Subcooled Process (GSP) is superior to the CRR process in all cases except for lean gas at 100 psia and high NGL to gas price ratio. The external refrigeration requirement was also studied. The findings suggest that external refrigeration is required in all cases except for a lean feed gas operated at 100 psia where self-refrigeration is sufficient in providing the low temperature requirements of the turboexpander process. The flow rate of the splitted streams were included in the optimization. The results also suggest eliminating one splitter in case lean feed is used in the process. Further, the ethane recovery was calculated in all cases confirming that the optimum ethane recoveries available in literature matched the ethane recoveries at optimum profit as well in all cases except for the lean feed at 100 psia where the recovery is slightly below the one available in literature. Furthermore, the effect of CO2 was studied for all of the GSP cases. The CO2 tolerance of CRR and GSP was considered at a demethanizer pressure of 100 psia. Pragmatics and the Translation of Self-Help Discourse

Soft and hard copy available.Traditionally, books are meant to instruct, entertain or both. A new wave of books has emerged known as self-help, promising its readers with better lives. These recipe format books present their own characteristics, notably with pragmatics as a primary feature of functionality. This thesis investigates those characteristics and relevant aspects of pragmatics used. The examples discussed in the analytical part of this thesis are divided into categories such as book cover and translation, speech acts, politeness, rhetorical questions, use of 'we' and 'you,' use of 'I' ethos, pragmatic markers, motivational language, cleft construction, intertextuality and argumentation. The thesis study case is The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, 2004 and its Arabic translation titled العادات السبع للناس الأكثر فعالية by Jarir Bookstore, 2015. The aim of this study is to examine whether the Arabic translation of this self-help book has managed to maintain the pragmatic features of the source text and which strategies may be considered best to use when translating such genres. The findings of the study show that the translation succeeded in retaining some pragmatic features while it failed to do so for others. Adaptive Estimation of Li-ion Battery Model Parameters

Soft and hard copy available.This work presents a novel application of a high gain adaptive observer-based technique for Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery modeling. The model used in this work was originally developed by Chen and Mora. However, in Chen and Mora's original work, the parameters required for the battery model were estimated through intensive experimentation. In contrast, this work presents an adaptive observer for estimating the battery model parameters. This results in the reduction of experimental effort required to estimate battery
model parameters. The selected model (Chen and Mora's model) requires twenty one parameters to accurately model a Li-ion battery. This work initially proposes three variations of a high gain adaptive observer-based technique to adaptively tune fifteen of the required parameters accurately. The remaining six parameters related to the shape of the no-load electromotive-force (EMF) curve are obtained via a voltage relaxation test. Based on observations made during simulations of the above proposed techniques, an improved estimation technique is proposed in the latter half of this document, and experimental results validating the proposed technique are presented. Experiments show that the model obtained through this technique is independent of the magnitude and type of load. The improved parameter estimation technique is justified using rigorous mathematical analysis. The proposed improved technique can be used either online or offline for estimating battery model parameters. Churchill's Iron Curtain Speech: Translation and Commentary

Soft and hard copy available.Although Winston Churchill wrote some of the greatest speeches of the twentieth century, few of those speeches or only fragments of them have been translated into Arabic. This thesis is a translation and commentary of one of the most famous speeches of Winston Churchill, the Iron Curtain oration, given at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri in the United States of America in 1946. The Iron Curtain is particularly chosen for translation because of its political, historical, and literary dimensions. Translating this speech provides a basis for the focus of this thesis: to discuss problems of translating political speeches, especially those which are rich in rhetoric, in light of theory; to offer solutions for these problems; and to inspect strategies as well as techniques that lead to these solutions. To this end, the emphasis of the commentary will be on how three rhetorical devices, namely metaphor, allusion and cohesive devices, are handled in the translation. Evaluation of the bending properties of profiled skin structure
A Master of Science thesis in Civil Engineering by Hassan Al Qaraghuli entitled, "Evaluation of the bending properties of profiled skin structure," submitted in January 2016. Thesis advisor is Dr. Adil Tamimi. Soft and hard copy available.This research is focused on developing a representative testing method for structural skin panels. The profiled panels are widely used in many applications used in warehouses and factories. They are mainly used as roof or wall cladding to resist uniformly distributed loads mostly imposed by wind loads. Existing mechanical tests include the operation of wind tunnels to apply uniform load on corrugated large surfaces. These wind tunnels are expensive to build, requires a large space and are time consuming. The main objective of this research is to develop an easier and realistic testing method to test these panels and provide accurate mechanical properties, such as the stiffness rigidity of the panels. A total of 54 samples of skin panels divided into 18 sets were tested. Each set consists of 3 samples of nearly 1.0 x 2.0 m in size. Sets are divided into different metals, shapes of corrugations (profiles), and thicknesses. Two types of metals were tested; galvanized steel and aluminum profiled sheets. To verify the value obtained from the laboratory, a theoretical calculation based on EN1999-4:2007 standards is calculated and compared with the British standard. Finally, a finite element model was developed to correlate laboratory and calculated results. The difference between the actual tested samples and the empirical calculations for the galvanized steel profiles was (0.31%-6.4%). The aluminum profiled sheets showed the same pattern which was (0%-7%). Furthermore, modeling by ABACUS showed close differences above the tested values which supports the current results.
