An Explainable Approach to Characterize Heart Diseases Using ECG Images

    No full text
Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders that involve both the heart and the blood vessels and represent one of the main causes of death all over the world. Their early identification plays a critical role in the prevention and effective treatment of these conditions, as cardiovascular diseases often progress silently without obvious symptoms in their early stages. In this regard, identifying the risk factors and the first manifestations of these diseases is crucial to intervene promptly and reduce the risk of serious complications. The electrocardiogram (ECG) is a widely used diagnostic tool to evaluate the electrical activity of the heart. This test provides crucial information about the functioning of the heart and can be useful in diagnosing various cardiovascular conditions. Its clinical utility, together with its simplicity of execution and its wide availability, makes such a test one of the pillars of cardiovascular medical practice. The objective of this study is to develop an approach to predict heart disease through the analysis of ECG images including a glimpse of explainability. Such an approach is based on a customized two-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN-2D) combined with the explainability provided by the Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) tool. The validation was conducted on a public dataset, made of ECG pictures of cardiac patients obtained from the Ch. Pervaiz Elahi Institute of Cardiology of Multan in Pakistan. The results have been very satisfactory and have shown the effectiveness of the proposed methodology, both in terms of performance and interpretability, which could represent a valid tool to support doctors in identifying both myocardial infarctions and arrhythmias in turn

Investigating faculty-initiated verbal, physical, social, sexual, and cyberbullying: A cross-sectional study from Turkey

Introduction: People have long assumed that bullying does not occur in university classrooms. However, a closer examination of university education reveals that faculty-initiated bullying is a real phenomenon that warrants attention. This study aims to investigate the classical forms of bullying perpetrated by faculty members in the university setting. We examined various types of bullying, including physical, verbal, and social bullying, sexual bullying, and cyberbullying. This paper seeks to address questions about the prevalence of faculty-initiated bullying and abuse against students. Methods: A web-based survey of 12 questions was administered to 2,676 senior university students attending state universities in the West Black Sea Region of Turkey. A chi-square test was utilized to compare the proportions of bullying acts across different groups categorized by types of schools (universities, colleges, vocational schools, and language preparation schools), type of education (daytime and evening education), grade or level of education (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th year students), and gender (male and female). We set the significance level at 5% and conducted two-sided tests. Results: The sample of 2,676 students included 1493 (55.8%) females and 1183 (44.2%) males, representing 15.46% of the total university population. 1,642 (61.4%) participants received daytime education, while 1,034 (38.6%) received evening education. The results revealed significant differences in the prevalence of bullying by faculty members among various types of schools. Notably, the significant values were for universities or faculties offering four-year courses, vocational schools/colleges offering two-year courses, and one-year language preparation courses. Additionally, between daytime and evening education, the groups differed only in the dimension of social bullying. Discussion: Bullying and mistreatment are quite common in higher education. Furthermore, male and female students showed only verbal and physical bullying distinctions. Finally, significant differences in physical, verbal, and sexual bullying and cyberbullying were observed in terms of grade levels, whereas no such difference was noted for social bullying. Take-home message: The results indicate that bullying at the university level is a real phenomenon that needs immediate attention. We need to prioritize interventions to increase the education and awareness of faculty members

The Debated Issue on Tissue Copper Levels in Colorectal Cancer Patients: A Meta-analysis and Replication Study

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a growing public health problem. Several clinical studies have shown a potentially oncogenic role of copper in CRC progression, but the reports are inconsistent. To examine published evidence on the association between tissue copper status and CRC, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis, searching Cochrane Library, EBSCOhost, Embase, ProQuest, PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science for studies reporting colon tumor and matched non-cancerous tissue copper concentrations in CRC patients for articles published till June 2023. Based on a random effects model, standardized mean differences (SMD) were assessed. We also completed a replication study on 17 CRC patients that analyzed copper levels in both cancer tissue specimens and healthy mucosa dissected from the same patient. Thirteen studies investigating copper levels (including the replication study) in colorectal specimens from a pooled total of 312 CRC and 298 healthy mucosa were selected. Our meta-analysis estimated a high between-study heterogeneity (I2 = 96%) and lower levels of copper in CRC tissue cancer specimens than in matched healthy mucosa: the decrease was equal to − 0.74 (95% CI, − 2.18; 0.71) but was not significant. The replication study showed a significant decrease in tissue cancer specimens. Sensitivity analyses of the meta-analysis revealed that pre-analytical methodology for tissue preparation significantly reduced the between-study heterogeneity strongly influencing copper levels (p < 0.01), indicating a copper decrease in the cytoplasmic copper pool of the tumor tissue suggesting a rapid turnover of the metal in cancer cells

New alliances between exercise professionals and pedagogists in school in hospital. The Physical Literacy perspective

    No full text
The focus of the symposium is on the development and validation of a theoretical and practical teaching and learning framework based on the key concepts of Physical Literacy (PL) in non-standard educational contexts, such as schools in hospitals. The analysis of the literature demonstrates that there is a lack of studies regarding the theoretical framework and practical application strategies of PL that can bring a significative SIGNIFICANT improvement to the development of motor skills in hospitalization conditions. The framework of PL developed by Jurbala (2015) demonstrates how the dimensions of PL concern areas such as cognitive and behavioral which, although related to the purely motor ones, require different approaches from those adopted so far. According to Morgan (2019) in fact, qualitative investigation methods have more potential to measure/evaluate the affective and cognitive domains than the physical ones typical of physical literacy demonstrating how a motivational climate of mastery is created when organizing tasks that are multidimensional, designed for variety and enjoyment and are differentiated to meet the needs of all patient-learners (Morgan, K., 2019). To promote and develop high-quality physical literacy pedagogy, motor science experts should also consider creating a climate of caring (Fry M, Gano-Overway, 2010), empowerment (Appleton P, Nikos N, Quested E., 2016) and motivation (Keegan R, Spray C, Harwood D, et a, 2010). Furthermore, a climate of ownership is achieved when the teacher encourages students to make decisions; and when students are focused on learning, effort and improvement. Education and health are two closely related aspects that support and increase the physical and mental well-being of young people and, consequently, children. In this contribution we therefore present the result of the three-year research work of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart and of the eCampus University, in collaboration with the hospital school “IC Salvo d’Acquisto” and the Maria Letizia Verga Center in Monza (Ferrari et al, 2022) which consists in the elaboration in a rubric of skills for planning and assess hospital motor education curricula. This tool is built on the Jubala PL model (2015), the ministerial guidelines for the first cycle (Miur, 2012) and the dimensions of the ICF-CY (OMS,2007)
