Il lemma abaso nella glossografia latina: ricostruzione di un percorso
The paper deals with the origin of a not already explained latin noun, abaso, which is found in many glossographic works since the late Antiquity. It is suggested that the form abaso has its roots in a lost Latin gloss to the Bible, dealing with abyssus, and thus, also a tentative explanation for its interpretation, i.e. infima domus, is provided
Postural effects of the use of touchscreen devices in a sample of young footballers: investigation and evaluation of an educational intervention
Purpose:
The use of touchscreen devices has strongly increased in the last years among young people. They are nothing more than electronic equipment, but the extended use of these tools can affects the health. The continue interaction between the human body and device negatively involves physical and mental area resulting in decreased performance, social and postural diseases. In relation to postural effects, the use of smartphones and tablets must be deeply analyzed. The aim of this study is to investigate the use of portable touchscreen devices in young football players and evaluate the effects of an educational intervention on posture, compared to no treatment.
Methods:
A total of 193 young football players (age range: 11 – 18 years old) in Cesena, Emilia Romagna Region, were recruited from two local football teams. Since the main objective of the study was to verify whether the efficacy of an educational intervention on postural behavior during the use of smartphones and tablets, an information leaflet and a specific questionnaire were created. The questionnaire was focused on device utilization, health status and social profile in order to outline the sample features, while the leaflet provided practical advices to improve postural aspects. Subsequently, after dividing the sample into an experimental group (EG) and a control group (CG), all participants filled out the questionnaire before and after a 2 weeks intervention time. During this period, only the EG received the leaflet created ad hoc to provide guidelines for correct postural use of the electronic devices, while CG continued the usual behavior.
Results:
The questionnaire then indicated that through a self-assessment the subjects interviewed Findings show that for all three postures investigated (standing, sitting, lying), that they mostly use an incorrect posture, especially when using touchscreen devices lying on the bed/sofa (72%) and standing (70%). By then analyzing the primary question of this experimental study, i.e. the possible effectiveness of the intervention carried out through the information-corrective booklet, interesting data were obtained. The values indicate that the experimental group corrected its posture of use from the standing position of the smartphone/tablet, with +21% of correct values compared to -3% of the control group, and this result is evaluated by statistical significance by Pearson.
Focusing on the problem of muscular discomfort due to an incorrect posture maintained during excessive use of smartphones/tablets, analyzing the location of the discomfort, frequency and intensity, results show that 32% of the total interviewees declare suffering from neck pain, 24% from back pain and to a lesser extent from pain in the shoulders and hands/fingers, and the frequency also reported for this variable appears to be a few days (every now and then). The average pain level indicated is 3.62 out of 10 (VAS scale).
Conclusions:
These findings contribute to provide a more current snapshot of the presence and invasiveness of touchscreen devices in the lives of today's adolescents through data collection on a large sample. Moreover, carrying out an educational intervention through the information-corrective booklet, it has been possible checking the usefulness and appreciation of this kind of health promotion strategy, also in a view of possible future intervention
Column Generation-Based Heuristic for Stochastic Bin Packing with One Defect per Pattern
In manufacturing systems where industrial components are produced by cutting bars of raw material, production efficiency can be significantly compromised by unpredictable defects occurring along the bars. Similarly, in non-preemptive parallel machine scheduling, machines may become temporarily unavailable due to unforeseen disruptions, thereby delaying job completion. Altogether, these uncertainties can pose a serious threat to process reliability and economic performance.
In this work, a 0-1 pattern-based formulation is proposed to deal with such disruptions – up to one per pattern – and is solved through column generation. Specifically, by solving the pricing problem we compute a one-dimensional cutting pattern (or job-to-machine assignment) that can be reconfigured in response to the defect (or machine downtime) observed: the objective is to maximize resource utilization and, consequently, save economic value. To the best of our knowledge, this model represents the first exact formulation devised for the problem addressed.
Numerical tests on benchmark instances derived from literature assess the quality of the model under the assumption of uniform defect distribution. Primal bounds obtained by means of Price-and-Branch procedure are compared with the heuristic framework developed in Arbib et al. (2023). The effectiveness of the methodology to cope with stochastic disruptions is finally discussed

Hypomanic symptoms in major depressive disorder: Prognostic impact and treatment issues
Background: Mixed depression (MXD), defined as (hypo)manic symptoms occurring within major depressive episodes, is common in both bipolar and unipolar disorders, but its prognostic and treatment implications remain unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between hypomanic symptoms, treatment response and remission of suicidal thoughts. Methods: We analyzed 1243 adults with major depressive disorder (MDD), recruited for a naturalistic study on treatment-resistant depression. Data were gathered cross-sectionally and retrospectively through structured interviews and clinical rating scales including the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS); statistical analyses were performed using univariate and multivariate methods. Results: Hypomanic symptoms were present in 651 patients (45 %), while 307 patients (25 %) responded to treatment. Both treatment responders (p < 0.0001) and those who achieved remission from suicide ideation (p = 0.0085) showed lower hypomanic (YMRS) scores. Multivariate analysis showed that hypomanic symptoms were negatively linked to treatment response (O.R. 0.71-0.87), while bipolar spectrum markers such as age at illness onset (O.R. 1.00-1.03) and MDD recurrence (O.R. 0.47-0.89) predicted remission from suicidal thoughts. Medications commonly used to treat bipolar disorder showed some benefits, with dopamine/serotonin antagonists improving suicide ideation (p < 0.0001) and mood stabilizers being associated with reduced hypomanic symptoms (p = 0.0003). Limitations: The study lacked prospective clinical assessments and treatment randomization. Conclusion: Hypomanic symptoms are common in unipolar depression; their assessment is essential to identify challenging-to-treat cases and select the best pharmacological options
L-CITRULLINE SUPPLEMENTATION, EXERCISE CAPACITY, AND RELATED PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES DURING EXERCISE IN HEALTHY ADULTS
L-citrulline is a naturally occurring non-essential amino acid that is both endogenously synthesised and obtained from dietary sources. Although it plays a critical role in the urea cycle, L-citrulline is primarily recognised for its contribution to nitric oxide (NO) synthesis, a gaseous signalling molecule generated as a by-product of the conversion of L-arginine to NO. Dietary supplementation with NO precursor L-arginine has shown improved exercise economy and tolerance in healthy adults. However, findings have been inconsistent, likely due to the limited bioavailability of the L-arginine resulting from extensive pre-systemic and systemic metabolism. In contrast, dietary supplementation with L-citrulline can bypass these metabolic barriers, thereby enhancing plasma L-arginine availability and stimulating NO production effectively. As a result, L-citrulline has emerged as a promising nutritional strategy to improve exercise “performance” by increasing NO bioavailability. The scientific literature on the ergogenicity of L-citrulline, however, remains equivocal. Inconsistencies among studies may arise, in part, from differences in exercise protocols and/or variations in supplementation protocols, including dosage. These factors, however, have not been systematically examined, and the occurrence of a dose-response relationship remains still uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, the present thesis investigated the effects of different doses of L-citrulline on exercise tolerance and associated physiological responses during ramp-incremental (Study 1) and constant work-rate cycling tests (Study 2). A group of moderately trained adults visited the laboratory on separate occasions and completed a ramp-incremental cycling test and/or moderate- and severe-intensity step transitions following supplementation of either L-citrulline or energy-matched placebo. Plasma [Orn], [Lys], [Arg], and AAI, blood pressure, and blood lactate were assessed before and after exercise. Pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation and NIRS-derived muscle oxygenation were measured throughout the exercise test. Plasma [Orn], [Arg], and AAI were significantly elevated after L-citrulline supplementation, while blood pressure remained unaltered. Similarly, pulmonary gas exchange and ventilation and muscle oxygenation responses to both ramp-incremental and constant work rate cycling did not differ between conditions. Collectively, the current findings do not support the ergogenicity of L-citrulline under the studied conditions. This result provides valuable evidence concerning the safety and practical applicability of L-citrulline supplementation in healthy, trained adults
Advancing Organisational Life Cycle Assessment in the Fashion Industry: Strategies for Sustainable Corporate Practices
The fashion industry, particularly fast fashion, is one of the most environmentally destructive sectors, accounting for 10% of global carbon emissions and consuming approximately 93 billion cubic meters of water annually. Textile production alone is responsible for 20% of global clean water pollution due to dyeing and finishing processes. With over 150 billion garments produced each year, the industry generates vast amounts of waste, with 87% of discarded textiles in the EU either incinerated or sent to landfills.
This paper examines the environmental impact of fashion, assessing corporate sustainability practices through methodologies such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Organisational Life Cycle Assessment (OLCA). A detailed case study of an Italian apparel manufacturer is presented, evaluating its environmental footprint over a one-year period using the SimaPro LCA tool and the Ecoinvent database.
The findings highlight critical areas for improvement, particularly in resource consumption, emissions reduction, and waste management. Recommendations focus on increasing resource efficiency, adopting renewable energy, and ensuring transparent sustainability reporting to combat greenwashing. By identifying data-driven solutions, this paper contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable fashion, offering practical strategies for reducing the industry’s environmental footprint and supporting long-term sustainability goals.
