A novel methodology for accessible design of multi-source renewable energy community: application to a wooded area in central Italy

    No full text
Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) are becoming essential in tackling energy transition challenges, promoting local energy sharing from diverse renewable energy sources to optimize environmental, economic, and social benefits. This study presents an innovative simulation tool for designing hybrid RECs that integrate diversified renewable sources, addressing a critical gap in existing tools. The tool was used to design a REC in a woodland area in central Italy where the sustainable management of locally available resources suggests the energy generation through biomass and photovoltaic plants. In this context, the REC initiative is further suggested as a mechanism to counteract depopulation trends by activating new services aligned with sustainable development goals. Simulations of various scenarios, involving REC members’ compositions and renewable plant sizes, reveal that opting for 600 kW biomass plant yields significant environmental benefits, with up to 1660 t/year of avoided CO2 emissions and over 80 % energy self-sufficiency for any configuration. However, incorporating more PVs in the energy mix could lead to shorter discounted payback period (down to 4.9 years). The engagement of industrial users is recognized as a critical factor for the success of the REC initiative, playing a vital role in community revitalization

Numerical and Experimental Analysis of the Structural Behavior of an EPP Component

    No full text
The use of expanded polymeric materials is becoming increasingly widespread in the industrial sector, not only for energy absorption purposes but also for structural applications. The most widely used approach to model the large strain elastic response of polymer foams in a finite element (FE) solution is the use of the Ogden–Hill hyperelastic material model. We performed a uniaxial and simple shear test to calibrate the model’s parameters. In this work, a compression test was performed on a component, entirely made of expanded polypropylene, from a commercial machine. The experimental results, measured through 3D image analysis, were then compared with the simulation ones. This study aims to verify whether the Ogden foam model accurately describes the material’s behavior when the component has a complex geometry and large dimensions

Male osteoporosis: the impact of lifestyle, from nutrition to physical activity

    No full text
Male osteoporosis is an increasing worldwide pathological condition, characterized by an increased risk of fragility fractures, that is underestimated, underdiagnosed and undertreated. Prevention and treatment play a pivotal role in reducing fractures, and it is important to remember that therapeutic interventions include balanced nutrition and physical activity. Pharmacological treatments are the main and most effective tool to achieve numerous and decisive benefits in this population. Among these, testosterone replacement therapy, when allowed by circumstances and comorbidities, is useful. Anyway, the main goal is always to start from lifestyle, including nutrition and physical activity, plays a very important and crucial role. The many pieces of this puzzle, called lifestyle, need to be accurately collected and grouped carefully, in order to be able to have a broad picture of what needs to be integrated and what is sufficient for the ultimate purpose of enabling each individual man to have a sufficient basic health point. Thus, the purpose of this short narrative review is to highlight the preventive and therapeutic role of lifestyle components, particularly nutrition and physical activity, in males with osteoporosis. Finally, an evaluation of the impact of the main current diets used in recent years and the main physical activities as strategies for the safety of male bone health
