Does Sustainable Performance Matter for Nonfinancial Disclosure Readability? A Fog Index Analysis on Italian-Listed Companies
This study aims to shed light on how corporate sustainable performance can influence the degree of nonfinancial disclosure (NFD) readability, determining which pillar of environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance has the most significant impact. To address these research questions, the study was conducted on a sample of Italian companies listed between 2017 and 2022, following the introduction of Directive 2014/95/EU. Using a panel regression, we aimed to examine the presence of a correlation between ESG performance and the readability of the reports (measured by the Gunning Fog index) employed by companies to disclose nonfinancial information. We successively conducted several robustness tests and verified the absence of multicollinearity and endogeneity. The results show that there is a positive and significant relationship between environmental performance and NFD readability, suggesting that companies with better environmental performance tend to make their disclosures more understandable and transparent. This result supports the signalling theory, according to which companies with good sustainability results try to distinguish themselves from others through clear and readable information. In contrast, no significant relationships are found for the social and governance dimensions, indicating that these variables may be less relevant in determining NFD readability. Practical implications highlight the importance of promoting accountability and transparency
in sustainability reporting. Regulators, on the other hand, could use these findings to refine existing regulations and introduce more stringent standards in terms of transparency and readability, to reduce the risk of greenwashing and improve the overall
quality of information provided to stakeholders
Risk factors of dementia in a cohort of individuals with mild cognitive impairment in the Italian Interceptor project
Background: The Italian Interceptor project is aimed at identifying a prodromal dementia phase and developing a nationwide organizational model. This study compares the sociodemographic and neuropsychological characteristics of mild cognitive impairment non-converters (MCI-NC) and MCI-converters (MCI-C) to dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), enrolled during the Interceptor project. Methods: Sociodemographic, clinical, and neuropsychological data of MCI individuals were collected at baseline (December 2018 to October 2020) and every six-month follow-up visit for 3 years. Logistic regression and Random Forest classifier were used to describe the study population. Results: From 356 participants, 104 were MCI-C, whereas 252 were MCI-NC. Compared to MCI-NC, MCI-C were predominantly female (p = 0.020), older (p < 0.001), and more cognitively impaired (p < 0.001). Higher physical activity was protective for progression (p < 0.001), but no difference was observed for smoking exposure (p = 0.312) between the two groups. Similar results were found for AD individuals compared to MCI-C/non-AD. The ROC curve based on a Random Forest classifier distinguishing MCI-C from MCI-NC showed an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.7347. Conclusions: Our findings confirm previous evidence in literature and may increase the insight on dementia pathology and help in defining intervention strategies to prevent or slow down disease progression

Video games and new generations. Analysis of perceptions, uses and consumption among children and young people
This study explores the perceptions, uses, and consumption of video games among children and young people, based on a questionnaire that collected 140 responses. Utilizing a conceptual framework that integrates theories of media learning and the influence of digital media on children’s development and learning, the data analysis reveals significant trends in young children’s gaming habits, motivations, and opinions. The findings indicate a wide range of behaviours and attitudes, with notable age and gender differences. Specifically, the study demonstrates how video games are used differently across age group and genders, with important implications for young people’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. The analyses show that while some children use video games as tools for socialization and learning, others view them primarily as forms of entertainment or escapism. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to the crucial role that video games can play in the development of children and young people. In this context, foundations are offered for developing educational strategies that utilize video games as effective tools for positive learning and development
The Children of Mixed Couples in the Postdigital Age: When Digital and Intercultural Competences Come Together
Starting with the concept of “Digital Educational Poverty”, the study focuses on digital competences and differences based on socioeconomic factors using the Depend tool (Digital Educational Poverty in Educative Networking and Development). This tool was tested in the Digital Connections project (2021-2024), involving 6.598 second-year middle school students. The concept of digital educational poverty stems from the hybridization of two perspectives in defining digital competence: the “Rights” perspective and that of “New literacies”, which focuses on the dynamism and transdisciplinarity of competencies. Through the survey of the Digital Competence Score submitted in 2022-23, it emerges that the results of children of mixed couples (6.20% of the total) surpass those of children with both parents born abroad (11.65%) and those with both parents born in Italy (82.15%). Using the concepts of “cultural capital” and “intercultural capital,” the article theorizes that these better results can be explained by the fact that both digital competences and intercultural competences are characterized by dynamism, contextualization, and a collective component
Producing Media in the Classroom to Struggle Digital Educational Poverty: A Research in Lower Secondary School
The article presents the results of a qualitative research that tested the effectiveness of the PRODACT tool (PROmote Digital Analysis and Competences in Transmedia), in the analysis of different digital formats produced by second and third year secondary school students, in a project to combat digital educational poverty in the civic education curriculum, promoted in 99 Italian schools between 2021 and 2024 by Save the Children, Cremit – Università Cattolica Milano, EDI Onlus. PRODACT is structured by intertwining the indicators of the aesthetic, critical and ethical dimensions of digital competence, typical of New Literacy (Rivoltella, 2020) together with the references of DigComp 2.2 and the four areas of Digital Educational Poverty. The analysis shows that the development of digital communicative practices implements not only students’ digital skills but also teaching practices that combine formal and informal skills and facilitate participation and protagonism
