Once in high school I was at a 
youth leader’s house for a girl’s night, 
and we were playing the compliment 
game where we went around in 
a circle, giving compliments to a 
chosen person before turning the 
affection to the next person. Most 
of the girls were crying from an 
overdose of sentiment. When it 
got to my turn, I nodded along as 
my brain felt clogged with sniffl ing 
noses, layers of side whispers, and 
creaking chairs and fl oorboards. 
During the round, my youth leader 
told me she loved how I worshiped—
how I closed my eyes and swayed. 
I smiled with tight lips and thanked 
her. But the thanks tasted bitter. 
On Worship
Gabrielle Utrie
Because I wasn’t going to tell 
her that I dreaded worship time. 
Or that I wasn’t doing those things 
unconsciously because I was lost in 
the Spirit. I closed my eyes because 
the clatter of too many instruments 
and the burning of too-bright lights 
threatened to make my brain melt 
every Sunday. I swayed because, in 
lieu of covering my ears and making 
a fool of myself, I needed some way 
to counteract and regulate against 
the overwhelming rush of sounds. My 
coping had been recast as holiness.
Christians aren’t supposed to 
dislike worship services. I constantly 
hear other Christians my age talk 
about how worship services feel 
rejuvenating and how they look

forward to going to worship nights—
even staying longer to sing extra 
songs. I wish I could leave worship 
rested rather than exhausted. I wish 
my mind didn’t scream against live 
music and crowded spaces. I wish 
community worship wasn’t bolted 
behind environments that I struggle 
to cope with. 
We’re told to make a joyful noise. 
I struggle to rejoice at the crackle 
of speakers, pounding bass music I 
can feel through the bottom of my 
shoes, fl ashing white and blue lights, 
the low buzz of conversations in the 
row behind me, shrieking electric 
guitars, the press of bodies around 
me, the waves of heat and sweat that 
clog my throat like cotton, and music 
so loud that it doesn’t sound like 
music anymore. Just clanging. 
But there are some sounds 
that I do rejoice over. The way my 
roommate says my name when she 
hasn’t seen me all day, choruses 
of clacking laptop keys as my 
friends and I write together, my 
boyfriend’s voice as he sings hymns, 
rain pounding, thunder rumbling, 
Rachel’s cackles through our shared 
wall, my rabbit’s honks, my cat’s 
chirps, Alayna’s cadence as she reads 
stories she’s written, the laughter-
soaked way my aunt says “oh my 
gosh, that’s hilarious” after a funny 
anecdote, nails clicking rhythmically 
against wood, toad croaks, cicada 
songs, the chickadee’s “kay-dee, 
kay-dee,” the scratch of ink across 
notebook paper, the snap of my 
grandpa’s motor brand playing cards 
as they’re shuffl ed together, the 
jumbled greetings and goodbyes 
from my parents over a video call, 
the rapping of lake water against 
the boat house’s algaed concrete, 
muffl ed ukulele notes through the 
dorm wall, crackling embers that

chase my cousins from the campfi re, 
the garage door of my house 
opening at 6:30 P.M. on weeknights. 
If I could make a worship song 
out of those, I would gladly dedicate 
the best sounds of humanity to the 
Lord.

Every June, my mom packs up my 
acid-wash jorts and Sony Walkman 
and throws me on an airplane to her 
hometown, saying the same thing, 
“You’re going, Niki. If you don’t have 
a good time, I’ll apologize when you       
get back.”  
My Aunt Kay picked me up at the 
airport in Georgia in her 1970 canary 
yellow Chevy, my cousins already 
trapped inside. Like we were escaped 
convicts on our way back to the big 
house, I joined Sean and Patrick 
silently in the back seat. For the whole 
afternoon, the truck rattled deep into 
the backwaters of the Georgia swamps 
as the radio blasted the top forty, or 
what little of it would crackle through the 
ear-splitting static. Camp Nasworthy, or

Camp Nasty-Water to those unfortunate 
enough to spend three weeks there 
every summer, was off I-75 in no-man’s 
land, marked by a whitewashed sign that 
simply said CAMP.
Slamming on the brakes, Aunt Kay 
stopped just inside the chain-link fence. 
Sean, Patrick, and I fi led out and stood 
in a line on the poison ivy-infested mud. 
Aunt Kay jumped out of the truck and 
gave us a hug. Enveloping us in a toxic 
cloud of hairspray and cigarette smoke, 
she offered her farewell: “It’s more than 
a hop-skip-and-a-jump to come back 
and get you, so whatever’s ailing you, 
walk it off. Sean, don’t run Pat’s drawers 
up the fl agpole again.” Then she and the 
truck were gone in a fl urry of mud.

A six-foot chain-link fence ran 
around three sides of the property and 
down into the swampy marsh they called 
a lake, locking the world out and all of us 
in. Two cinder block bunkhouses stood 
in a line with the dining hall and an ‘all-
purpose building,’ the glorifi ed shed that 
housed everything else.  
“I get the bottom bunk.” Sean 
dumped his duffl e in Pat’s arms and 
stormed off to the boys' cabin.
Pat ran after him and disappeared in 
the trees, yelling that he wasn’t going to 
sleep on the top bunk ever again. 
I hurried down to the girls' cabin, 
praying there was a bottom bunk left. 
Girls and fl ies swarmed in the cabin, and 
Danger Zone sputtered out of a portable 
radio like a warning. I weaved my way in 
and out of Sears and Roebuck sleeping 
bags, desperately searching for a bunk. 
In the corner, shoved up against two 
whitewashed cinder block walls, was the 
last bed, the top bunk. “Gag me with a 
spoon!” I groaned. “How am I gonna do 
this for another summer?”

I saw Sean and Pat across the dining 
hall at dinner; based on Pat’s face, he 
had lost the bunk argument. I shared 
an icy shower that night with a family of 
spiders over my head and then climbed 
into bed. Sweat trickled down my 
temples as I lay in the sticky blackness—
then I froze. Pop, pop, pop, sounded 
across the fl oor, and my stomach started 
to churn. Then up the wall, then across 
the ceiling, pop, pop, pop. It didn’t 
matter that I couldn’t see them, I knew 
an army of tree frogs was staring back 
at me from above. Anytime I began to 
drift off, one of the frogs would move 
and jolt me back awake, terrifi ed that the 
humidity would make those sucky-cup 
toes lose their grip.

“You look awful,” I said, slamming my 
plate of runny eggs down across from 
Pat the next morning.  
He rolled his eyes back and stuck his 
tongue out.
“Stop making that face Pat, I’m 
gonna hurl.” Sean joined us at the table, 
smacking Pat on the back of the head.
“What's got you in such a            
good mood?”
“Shut up, Niki.”
“Chill, Sean,” Pat snapped. “He’s just 
sour ‘cause the counselor said he had to 
move to the top bunk.”
“Why?”
“Because,” Sean answered, shooting 
a look at Pat. “Some little pip-squeak’s 
afraid he’s going to fall off the top 
bunk, so they’re making us switch.” Pat 
and I stayed quiet. “I gotta get out of 
here, I’m too old to be here anyway.”                 
Sean grimaced, swirling his watery 
orange juice.
“What if we broke out?” Pat looked 
at us like he had just saved the world.
“How are you going to do that, 
Einstein, phase through the gate?”
Pat threw an egg at me. “I wasn’t 
thinking about the gate, moron.”
I huffed and crossed my arms.
“I was thinking about going out 
around the fence down at the lake. It's 
only like three feet deep where it ends.”
“Mom’s gonna beat the tar out of 
you.” Sean got up and walked away.
My stomach sank the same way 
it had when all those frogs started 
climbing up the walls, then I started 
thinking about being forced to make 
camp crafts, play camp games, sing 
camp songs, and swim in the camp ‘lake.’ 
“I’m in, Pat. What’s the plan?”

I sat with Pat at crafts. While 
everyone else made paper canoes, 
we used the Georgia map on the wall 
to plan our escape, then folded the 
contraband sketch into the little boat to 
sneak it past the counselors. He signaled 
to me through the fl ames at the campfi re 
that night, as we sang about a bear and 
an alligator.
We spent the next two days training 
for the escape: running, swimming, 
monkey bars. Pat thought he was a navy 
seal during the water relay race. He 
looked more like a whale that was still 
learning to swim. We saw Sean for the 
fi rst time at dinner.
“You’re gonna get caught or lost.”
“No one said you were invited.” Pat 
stuffed his roll in his pocket, grabbing 
Sean’s from his hand.
“Hey!”
“Provisions.” Pat grabbed the roll 
from my plate. “Wouldn’t want to starve 
when we get lost.” He grabbed a roll off 
the plate of a little kid walking by. “See 
you in three weeks, Sean.” He smiled, 
stealing Sean’s cookie when he got up.
“Dude, stop!”
“You coming with us?”  I asked.
“Not on your life.”

That evening, I packed my bag and 
tucked it under the foot of my bunk, 
climbing into bed with my Keds still on 
my feet.  Pop, pop, pop wafted through 
the air. I waited patiently for the feet to 
crawl up the wall and onto the ceiling 
before I slipped out of bed and through 
the door.  
Swinging my duffl e onto my 
shoulder, I dashed between shadows 
down to the swamp.  Standing at the

edge of the water, leaves started 
shuffl ing behind me.  
“Niki!”
I jumped as Pat hurdled towards me. 
“Jerk! Don’t scare me like that!”  
“We’ve gotta hurry, I’m                
being followed!”
Pat fl ung our bags over the fence, 
and I pulled off my shoes. As the last bag 
landed on the other side, leaves started 
rustling again. I dashed into the water, 
the warm, sticky mud seeping into my 
socks and between my toes as I rounded 
the fence. Pat tried to scramble up the 
chains, but he got stuck at the very top, 
like he wasn’t exactly sure how to swing 
his leg over.
“C’mon, Patty!”  I called through my 
teeth. I could hear the bushes shifting. 
Heart pounding, I grabbed Pat’s hand 
and pulled. He landed with a thud next 
to me just as a fi gure burst through the 
bushes. We both screamed.
“Are you trying to break your      
neck, MacGyver?”
“Sean, you freakazoid!” Pat yelled. 
“What are you doing out here?”
“If you both die, I’ll be grounded for 
the rest of my life, so I’m coming too.” His 
bag fl opped down next to me. “Besides, 
I’m the only one with a compass.”  
Sean pulled himself up and over the 
fence easily, jumping down and giving 
Pat a smug look.
We ran along the fence to the road, 
tripping over roots and grass, then a dog 
started barking.
“They stuck the hounds on us! Run!” 
Sean screamed, sprinting down the 
road, me and Pat in tow as we imagined 
the vicious hounds chasing us down.

A hot wind rushed through the 
trees as birds screamed above us. 
Pat grabbed for my hand once, but I 
smacked him away. We slid down the 
mudbank into the ditch when a car 
rattled by like we were fugitives on 
Magnum P.I. My faith in my cousins 
slowly started to melt, I had no idea 
where we were, and I knew they didn’t. 
Sean’s compass didn’t do us a lot of 
good in the dark, and Pat lost our canoe 
map in the swamp. After what seemed 
like forever, a hazy glow showed up 
on the horizon. Sean and Pat argued 
for half a mile over whether or not it 
was the sunrise. After another mile, the 
glow started to separate into individual    
neon signs. 
“See, I knew my plan would work!” 
Sean told us, then ran down the road.
As we reached the edge of town, 
a sign beside the road said Radsby 
Georgia, population 104. We passed 
by a dark diner and a store and a few 
houses before we hit the far end of town, 
where there was a gas station with a   
pay phone.  
Sean slid a quarter into the slot. 
“What’s your mom’s number, Niki?”
“What are you calling her for?”
“I can’t call my mom, she’ll       
murder me.”
“You have to, she's the only one 
close enough to come get us.”
After a few more minutes of arguing, 
we dialed Aunt Kay’s number.  
“Uh, hi mom… yeah, I know it's late.” 
Sean looked like he was about to kill Pat. 
“I…I, here, talk to Niki.”
He shoved the receiver in my hands. 
I tried to sound sweet. “Hi, Aunt Kay. 
You’ll never guess where me and the 
boys are right now.”

We sat on the curb, throwing rocks, 
until just before sunrise, when Aunt 
Kay pulled up in that canary yellow 
truck. We piled into the back seat as 
victors, silently high-fi ving as the truck 
rumbled down the highway. Aunt Kay, 
puffi ng smoke in our faces like a snake’s 
venom, lectured us about the virtue of 
gratitude and how she and my parents 
sacrifi ced just so we could go to camp, 
and we shouldn’t be bratty about it. She 
topped off her speech by telling us how 
much she and my mom loved Camp 
Nasworthy growing up and that kids 
these days are just spoiled. We were too 
busy celebrating in the back seat to be 
paying any attention to her threats.
“Sean, isn’t that the turn-off for 
home?” Pat whispered, shaking his 
brother back to reality about ten minutes 
into the drive.  
We watched as the fork in the 
road rushed past us. The only thing 
that differentiated it from every other 
swamp-lined corner was the big To I-75 
painted on the road. Our party turned to 
stunned silence as the white CAMP sign 
appeared in the distance.  
Aunt Kay laid on the horn until 
a confused, half-asleep, barefoot 
counselor appeared and opened the 
gate. She jumped out of the truck and 
started having ‘words’ with him about 
supervising children and not letting 
them wander through the woods at 
night. Her words were blurred by the 
window and the dense blanket of 
morning mugginess, but the counselor’s 
eyes were wide in panicked horror. I 
wondered what she had been saying to 
us when we weren’t listening.  
“Don’t make me come back up 
here!” we heard her yell, jabbing her 
fi nger at the councilor like a knife, 
then she turned to us, crowded in one 
window. “What are you doing?  Get out 
of the truck!” We knew better than to 
disobey. We fumbled with our seat belts,

falling over each other out the door, and 
ended up back in a line on the mud, with 
our bags at our feet.
“Don’t make me come back up 
here!” She threatened us too, then she 
was gone in a fl ash of yellow, chrome, 
and radio static. The gate locked   
behind her.
We just stood there for a second, 
staring at the tire marks, and marinating 
in the familiar reek of Nasty-Water.
“I knew your plan wouldn’t work.” 
Sean threw his duffl e over his shoulder 
and sulked back to bed.
I picked up my bag and walked  
away, leaving Pat alone in the mud and 
mosquitoes, his mouth hanging open 
dumbly, rolls still bulging in his pockets.  
Climbing into bed with my soaked 
socks and shoes still infecting my feet, I 
listened to the slimy green fogs retreat 
in the early glow of the still sleeping 
bunkhouse. Pop, pop, pop.
My mom is going to owe me such   
an apology.
