Gray Fox in the Moonlight presents a masterfully illustrated book about a fox wandering
through the woods at night. The book’s dark blue and yellow pages create a calm tone and mood,
and the author demonstrates the movement of the fox with dynamic word placement. Eventually,
the fox returns to her den, where her kits are asleep. She falls asleep next to them as the night
ends. This book would be a good selection for young readers. It does not include many words,
and these words are easy to comprehend and pronounce.

Amy Carmichael: The Brown-Eyed Girl Who Learned to Pray is part of the Do Great
Things for God biography series for young children. Amy Carmichael was an influential
missionary in the early 1900s in India, providing great resources and care to many enslaved
children, leading them to Christ through love and motherhood. Carmichael deeply cared for the
children in India that she gave up living in Ireland for most of her adult life, staying in India until
her passing. She was buried in Dohnavur, the village she cared for so deeply in India. This
children's biography is a great tool for parents to introduce their children to the mission field, a
love for Christ that surpasses comfort, and healthy spiritual disciplines such as prayer and an
“Ask and Receive” journal that deepens a relationship with Christ. This book would be best for
1st or 2nd graders because it is a shorter, more concise read that still provides a good idea of who
Carmichaeal was but also gives a timeline with more detail for the more experienced reader. This
book also provides reflection questions at the end so that the student can truly understand her
journey and reflect on theirs. The theme of love is clear for the reader through her sacrifice and
her devotion to the children in Dohnavur, along with her emphasis on 1 Corinthians 13:13.

A Standout Performance for Inaugural Mock Trial Team    
CEDARVILLE, OHIO  -  For the first time in Cedarville University history, a mock trial team competed in a 
collegiate tournament and finished the competition at St. Bonaventure University as one of the top 
teams. Overall, the two Cedarville teams of 19 students total, won four out of eight judges’ ballots.  
“I was very pleased with how our first-ever mock trial team performed,” said Greg Thompson, professor 
of criminal justice and a retired member of the Air Force JAG Corps. “We will continue to improve with 
each competition as the students hone their ability to think critically and communicate with conviction 
and insight.”  
The mock trial competition allows students with aspiring legal professions to gain experience in a 
courtroom. Student lawyers prosecute a case and others defend a client. Two judges score each round, 
awarding a ballot to the higher-scoring team. The overall ranking is based on the number of ballots each 
team wins at the end of the tournament.  
The mock trial at the intercollegiate level requires each university team to prepare a defense and 
prosecution on a specific case. In competition, students simulate a trial, meaning they must play the 
roles of attorneys and witnesses. This simulated trial is unscripted, so competitors must know the 
intricacies of the court to be able to make split-second decisions during the trial to win the round. 
Individual competitors are also judged on the overall performance of their character.   
Rachel Kidder, a freshman from Dacono, Colorado, majoring in psychology, was recognized for being the 
best prosecution witness in the tournament. Her experience in high school mock trial competitions was 
evident in Cedarville’s first competition.  
Like many other mock trial students, competing in mock trial events has inspired Kidder to pursue law 
school after she graduates from Cedarville University.   
“I hope to expand my knowledge of how to not only win a case but to represent Jesus and my clients 
well,” Kidder reflected. “As a lawyer, I know I will have significant responsibilities to serve my clients well 
and to demonstrate what it means to be a Christian lawyer. It will be a platform that I will embrace.”  
While Kidder is focused on her future, Wes Rodu, a senior from Leetsdale, Pennsylvania, majoring in 
political science and economics, knows that it will take dedication from each member of the team to 
excel in competitions this year, and also to harness the skills that will prepare the students after 
graduation.  
“As a co-captain of the team, I know these competitions are helping us hone our communication skills,” 
said Rodu. “As the season progresses, our team will spend up to six hours a week outside of class time 
preparing for future cases and roles. This is a great way to improve our skills and continue learning.”  
The next competition for Cedarville’s Mock Trial team will be later this month at Kent State University.

Contributor's Note 
As I contemplated this project I began to think about what is associated with my favorite handmade mug. 
Diving into that question I began to think about the conversations I have with close friends that are often 
over coffee or tea. These conversations with close friends are beautiful and safe but can also be raw and 
painful as we dive past the surface and into our struggles. Oftentimes, these struggles are rooted in a lie 
that is contrary to God’s truth. Satan constantly seeks to bombard God’s children with lies that will shake 
our confidence in the Father. As believers, we are supposed to be in fellowship together, confess our 
brokenness to each other, and point each other back to God’s truth. For this project I created 30 mugs, 15 
pairs of two mugs. In each pair of mugs, one displays a lie that Satan convinces people to believe, and the 
second mug displays God’s truth. The lies displayed are based on real conversations I have had with 
friends as well as responses on an Instagram pool where people shared the lies that they struggle with 
believing. The purpose of these mugs is to provide an opportunity for people to discuss the lies in their 
life and what God’s truth is in response. The mugs are crafted to foster opportunities for deeper and more 
vulnerable conversations among the community of believers.

As I began this project, I thought about the conversations my close friends and 
I have about our struggles, which are often over coffee or tea. These conversations 
are safe but can be painful and raw as we dive past the surface into our deeper lives. 
Often, the struggles we discuss are rooted in lies that Satan uses to attack God’s 
children. As believers, we are supposed to have fellowship where we can confess 
our brokenness and point each other back to God’s truth. For this project, I created 
15 pairs of mugs displaying Satan’s lies and God’s corresponding truth. The lies 
displayed are based on the real struggles of real people. The mug pairs are intended 
to provide an opportunity for believers to have deep and vulnerable conversations to 
discuss Satan’s lies and the truth God reveals.
