Enhancing Minority Patient Outcomes: The Impact of Culturally Tailored Interventions
The minority population in America is rapidly growing and with it the need to cater to different ethnicities in the healthcare system. Culturally tailored interventions are in place but tailored for majority populations and not customized for minority groups. This project aimed to find and critically appraise academic articles that evaluated culturally tailored health care for minority groups compared to standard interventions and to understand the interventions\u27 effect on minority patient satisfaction. We used CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature) and PubMed (Public Medical Database) to find peer-reviewed academic articles from 2015-2025. We included articles that addressed the topic of culturally tailored health interventions and patient satisfaction in minority groups. John Hopkin’s Evidence-Based Practice tools Appendices E and F determined each article’s quality. The ten articles included in this study found that incorporating culturally tailored interventions for minority groups into the healthcare context increased minority patients’ satisfaction with their care. The research also showed that a patient-provider match from the same culture had better patient satisfaction outcomes than providers and patients of different racial groups. Despite the positive correlation between culturally competent care and patient satisfaction, integration of such interventions is lacking among healthcare workers. Healthcare workers must attempt to eliminate barriers to culturally appropriate healthcare as much as possible. They must also stay educated on the cultures around them to see positive patient outcomes and satisfaction
ShompOS: Experimentation with Operating Systems Development
The operating system is the program running at the lowest level on a computer. Modern operating systems like Windows, MacOS, and Linux are complex, and it’s difficult to grasp how each component interacts with one another. This project seeks to build an operating system from the ground up, creating several core components from scratch. Over the course of two semesters, foundational functionality was identified and implemented in an accessible way. In its final product, users can interact with several of the features and explore how each one is concretely implemented
Hidden Beauty
This artwork is a set of ceramic nesting bowls designed to look like geodes. From the outside, a hard and bumpy rock exterior. But from the inside, a beautiful shimmering gem. This set consists of three bowls, all stacked within each other and designed so that you can see all the bowls at once. When making this artwork, I wanted to play with texture and color. The outside of each bowl accomplishes my texture goal. You are able to take your hand and run it along the side and feel all of the bumps and ridges I pressed into the surface of the clay. An underglaze was used to create the color on the bowl; then, I went in with a clear gloss glaze on the inside to make sure it was shiny, leaving the outside with a matte rock exterior.
Another element I wanted to play around with was the idea of creating a family portrait in a less traditional style. This required thinking outside of the box. When looking overhead at my bowls, they reminded me a little of an eye. From that realization, my idea started to take shape. The inside of the largest bowl was glazed in blue, which is the color of my dad\u27s eyes. The medium bowl was glazed with green, the color of my mom\u27s eyes. For the smallest bowl, I was a little stumped about what color to use because I have three brothers, and we each have different colored eyes. I finally decided to use reds and purples, which, to me, were colors that signified love and brought the entire picture together
Jericho: A Cyber City for Enhancing Cyber Operations Education
Cyber operations create effects in physical space as well as cyberspace, but most cybersecurity education exercises are confined to cyberspace. Jericho helps drive home the real impact of cyber operations and cyber-insecurity by incorporating physical space effects into cyber operations education. Jericho is a physical table-top cyber city that incorporates critical infrastructure elements. It blends a traditional cyber range experience with a physical range. Existing cyber physical ranges are rare and prohibitively expensive. Jericho is a model for how ranges can be constructed inexpensively. It uses off-the-shelf electromechanical components like motors, speakers, and light emitting diodes (LEDs) wired to a microprocessor such as Raspberry Pi Zeros. It models how missions can be created on the range by placing students in the role of cyber operators charged with the attack or defense of critical infrastructure. Students gain access to the cyber city’s network over a VPN and begin their mission in a sandboxed virtual machine environment similar to many cyber education exercises. In one mission, students find and exploit vulnerabilities as they pivot through a mock city’s cyberspace infrastructure with the goal of commandeering the city’s traffic lights. The mission is accomplished when the physical traffic lights in the miniature city change at the will of the students
Making the Presidency More Loving: A Simple Way Elections can Represent Democracy
The Constitution of the United States declares that all persons born outside of the country do not possess eligibility to serve as president. The intent behind Article II Section I Clause V was to protect the U.S. from a British born loyalist winning an election and turning the U.S. back to the motherland. The threat of this never occurred and is even further removed now. Citizenship in the U.S. includes blood and land yet, the Supreme Court has never had a case in which they were forced to define what a “natural born citizen” is. There have been disputes between Senator Obama, Senator McClain, Senator Rubio, and Senator Cruz’s place of birth. Most as political mudslinging promoting a culture of division and polarization. The very design of the Constitution gives space to each branch to move and work, since they do not hold sole authority. The checks and balances in place correct the president\u27s actions and character, which applies to those born in the U.S. or abroad.
The argument for a Constitutional amendment and the repeal of Article II Section I Clause V outweighs that of the current position. Britain is not in fact a threat to U.S. homogeny. America was birthed out of immigrants who braved the Atlantic and sought new life. One asks the question, can the presidency be more loving? The answer is yes. It can be made to represent 45.3 million immigrants better. The American people want to elect people that truly represent the needs that they possess. It can be made to support one’s neighbor better. This is not a matter of Right vs. Left. Rather, if one is deeply convinced that love for the neighbor stems from dignity found within the imago dei, and they walk around as a reflection and reminder of Christ’s beauty, people’s needs ought to shape change
Language Choice in Coffeeshops: A Sociolinguistic Case Study in Berlin, Germany
Research shows that culture, politics, and immigration affect languages (Ahmed, 2024; Francis & Ryan, 1998; Stein, 1989; Ben-Said, 2019; Gorter, Marten, & Van Mensel, 2013; Holm, 2013; Özcan, 2016; Papen, 2012). The international urban setting of Berlin, Germany is a hub for business, engineering, and academia, giving it a diverse community. This study examines the potential influence of lingua franca English (LFE) on the Berlin by analyzing public discourse in third wave coffeeshops, contextualized by neighborhood graffiti in the districts of Kreuzberg, Mitte, and Charlottenburg. Field observations recorded data on two different days per location; public discourse was subsequently transferred into digital notes on Microsoft Excel, capturing participant first language, participant second language, participant age, participant gender, significant utterances. Data analysis considered sociolinguistic factors such as code-switching, adjacency pairs, and politeness and ethnolinguistic factors such as demographics and public policy. Preliminary findings suggest that individuals typically respond in the language they are greeted with, regardless of their preferred language with companions. Additionally, the ratio of men to women mirrored the ratio of English to German speakers across all three districts. The results reflected a significant influence of LFE on Berlin as seen in a select public sphere
Dancing into Well-Rounded Pianism: Using Bach’s French Suite No. 6 as a Facilitator
Developing a piano student into a performer who is familiar with both their technique and the music they are studying is a sought after, yet challenging goal for piano teachers to accomplish. The path to bring a student to the world that exists beyond the rhythm and the notes can be difficult to find, but it exists with certainty. One tool that can facilitate this journey is Johann Sebastian Bach’s French Suite No. 6. This piece is a dance suite that an advanced student would be able to learn rather quickly, allowing them to focus on details. Bach’s French Suite No. 6 is not too challenging in terms of notation while still containing ground for teaching musical expression, for exploring Baroque era tastes, and understanding the context of 18th century music. The knowledge from a wide range of philosophical, scholarly, and pedagogical texts have been compiled and applied to an analysis of Bach’s French Suite No. 6 to show how this piece can take a piano student to the next level of their musical career
Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Botulinum Neurotoxin A Injections for Pediatric Spastic Cerebral Palsy
Spastic cerebral palsy is a neurological condition caused by brain damage to the fetal or newborn brain, with damage centralized to the motor cortex. Impaired neurons in the cortex transmit constant nerve impulses to skeletal muscle, causing many voluntary movements to become spastic contractions. There are a plethora of treatments for spasticity, but occupational therapy (OT) proves to be among the most effective of treatment strategies. However, a recent treatment for spastic cerebral palsy is Botulinum Neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) injections. BoNT-A is a neuromuscular blocker that prevents the release of acetylcholine from the motor nerve axon, temporarily paralyzing the muscle fibers for up to 3 months depending on dose strength and volume. According to current key clinical studies, OT following injections may optimize limb function and reduce the need for recurrent injections.
This clinical review analyzed the safety and efficacy of upper-limb injection of BoNT-A and compared BoNT-A to OT treatment for pediatric spastic cerebral palsy. Efficacy and safety of repeat BoNT-A injections were evaluated using the Modified Ashworth Scale and vital sign measures, assessing spasticity and general health in children with spastic cerebral palsy receiving repeat injections. Researchers concluded that BoNT-A injections are a safe treatment for patients and significantly reduce upper-limb spasticity. Additionally, BoNT-A injections combined with pediatric OT treatment were compared with OT alone in a 12-month randomized controlled trial. Outcome measures included range of motion tests and occupational performance measures, and results demonstrated that BoNT-A as an adjunct to OT led to significantly greater function during daily upper extremity tasks compared to OT treatment alone. Finally, a systematic review and meta analysis further demonstrated the effectiveness of BoNT-A injections for reduction in spasticity and functional improvements in children with spastic cerebral palsy; however, OT combined with BoNT-A treatment significantly optimized results. In conclusion, this literature review showed that BoNT-A is best used as an adjunct to OT, reducing spasticity and increasing functional performance of the affected limbs. Future research directions include investigation of the sustained treatment effects of BoNT-A over the long term along with the efficacy of BoNT-A for fixed contractures
Familial Memory Book
Much of my work is about my family and our genealogy. I do a great deal of work about my Grandma Kizer who passed away and her character and background. I have branded myself as a sort of “mini-me” to my Grandma and my Mother. I believe that much of my interest in culture originates from the mindset of older maternal family members. Once they immigrated to the United States, my Great-Grandparents wanted to “Americanize” fully, even if that meant not passing on their language and history. This mystery and loss of knowledge of my Grandmother\u27s family sparked my desire to know and understand more. In a way, my art is my familial/historical record, or atleast the process of my understanding and knowledge seeking. I think that my search has also made me more open and loving towards the cultures around me and has created an eclectic taste of interests.
My current body of work has primarily consisted of oil paint/fabric mixed media; However, I do also work in some charcoal, sculpture, printmaking, and clay. Sewing and working with fabric is something that I learned from my Grandma Kizer and my Mother, and has become what makes me feel most connected to them. I have been diving into quilting techniques and color blocked in portraits, which creates a thread of narrative that flows through much of my work. I also enjoy superimposing blocks of color onto a busier surface in order to flatten it out and guide the eye. This is a way for me to bring a modern touch to the traditional values and community I grew up around
