“Housekeeper”: The Application of Barbara Ketcham Wheaton’s Methodology to a Year in the Life of Honor Moore’s Recipe Columns
Honor Moore was an Irish food writer who started writing a daily recipe column for the Belfast Newsletter in 1946, “Cookery Hints” written under her nom de plume, Housekeeper was published until 1963. In her personal collection there are scrapbooks of cuttings of her columns. Moore’s 1952 scrapbook, comprises recipe columns from each month of that year as well as cuttings she saved from other newspapers and magazines. Barbara Ketcham Wheaton’s structured approach to reading historic cookbooks was applied to Moore’s columns for this study; using the categories of ingredients, the cook’s workplace, the meal, the book and worldview. The exploration of the columns revealed a detailed view of the ingredients available in Northern Ireland in 1952 in the aftermath of the war and subsequent austerity, as well as the equipment the readers had to work with in their kitchens. The category of the meal was less fruitful with Moore focussing more on sharing recipes and new ideas with her readers rather than on when and how to serve meals. It was the category of the book that revealed many of Moore’s influences and seen altogether in one scrapbook the range and depth of her many recipes became apparent, with each daily column usually comprising two or three recipes as well as some advice and hints. In post-war Northern Ireland it was the overarching theme of frugality that emerged as most significant from this exploration. Wheaton’s structured approach proved to be a suitable methodology with which to explore the daily recipe columns. The study concludes that the exploration of Moore’s columns provided an understanding of the milieu in which she was writing and allowed for an appreciation of the domestic lives of women in the post-war era in Northern Ireland

L\u27émergence des restaurants à Paris au XVIIIe siècle marque un tournant dans l\u27histoire de la gastronomie française. Initialement, le terme restaurant désignait un bouillon fortifiant, mais, à compter des années 1760, un « restaurateur » devient le lieu où l’on consomme ces « restaurants »… un lieu où, surtout, l\u27on pouvait manger à tout heure, choisir ses plats sur une carte et bénéficier d\u27un service personnalisé. Les premiers restaurants se distinguaient par leur luxe, leur décor soigné et leurs prix élevés, s\u27adressant principalement à une clientèle aisée. C’est la salle à manger aristocratique projeté dans l’espace public. Au XIXe siècle, le nombre de restaurants a explosé, passant de moins d\u27une centaine en 1789 à plusieurs centaines, avec une hiérarchisation entre établissements à la carte et à prix fixe. Dans les années 1830, les grands boulevards sont devenus le cœur de la haute gastronomie parisienne. Les restaurants font figure d’espace de sociabilité incontournable, jouant un rôle clé dans l\u27élaboration et la diffusion de la grande cuisine française, et contribuant à la renommée culinaire du pays et de Paris en particulier
Plasmonic Down-Shifting Layers for Cylindrical Solar Concentrators
The efficiency of photovoltaics (PVs) and photo-thermal (PT) systems is hindered by spectral mismatches and low thermal conductivity. A promising solution to address these issues can be the use of luminescent down-shifting (LDS) layers. This involves the incorporation of luminophores into solid or liquid layers that will act as spectral beam splitters (SBSs). In solid polymers, they form luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs), while in liquids, they act as working fluids and SBS for hybrid photovoltaic-photothermal (PVT) systems. This thesis will examine the energy conversion in both solid and liquid configurations through experimental, simulation, and economic analyses. An open-source model that simulates photon interactions with LSC and hybrid SBS materials was adapted and validated against experimental data for PVT systems. Categorizing photon processes such as luminescent downshifting, absorption, parasitic losses, and transmission allowed to assess and categorize the photons contributions towards electrical and/or thermal energy outputs. An experimental apparatus was developed to test hybrid PVT liquids, enabling validation of novel materials through simulations and benchtop trials. Further validation of the simulation-experiment approach for hybrid PVT involved dispersing new synthesised boron dipyrromethene dyes into liquid solutions that lead to higher energy outputs for both electrical and thermal components. Economic analysis was used to determine the suitability of the PVT systems for deployment in various European regions. Finally, in this thesis a new method for 3D printing luminescent solar concentrators was investigated. The surface, the refractive index and the optical properties of the 3D printed LSC were analysed along with the influences that the luminophore present have on the electrical outputs of a PV system. The method showed that 3D printing can lead to new LSCs configuration that could increase the solar energy conversion
C3) From Ritual to Heritage: Mountain Pilgrimages and The Transmission of Practices in Corsica
In Corsica, mountain pilgrimages serve as a key vector for the transmission of the sacred and a marker of collective identity. Rooted in popular religiosity, these practices intertwine ritual performance, oral tradition, and spatiality, shaping a unique relationship between faith and territory. The study of these pilgrimages offers a means to examine the processes of sacralization of mountain spaces and their role in the transmission of religious practices, as well as the question of their heritage status.
This study focuses on three mountain pilgrimages in Corsica: Sant\u27Alesiu di Sermanu, Sant\u27Alesiu d\u27Alisgiani, and San Bertuli d’Orezza. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, it provides an anthropological and social analysis of these pilgrimages, with a particular focus on their inscription within the mountainous landscape and their connection to popular religious expressions. These pilgrimages rely on intergenerational transmission, sustained by oral tradition, collective memory, and ritual structuring, reinforcing the embeddedness of the sacred within a landscape perceived as a space of mediation between the divine and the community. These rituals are built upon devotional gestures, votive practices, and local beliefs, which belong to a set of symbolic gestures and ritualized acts, reflecting a shared symbolic system. Through these practices, the sacralization of mountain spaces ensures the continuity of pilgrimage traditions, while also shaping a specific approach to religious experience that transcends institutional frameworks. The mountain thus becomes both a symbolic and material anchor for the sacred, where religious meanings are continuously redefined in interaction with the landscape.
This study highlights how the sacralization of mountain landscapes contributes to the resilience of these pilgrimages, while shaping a distinct approach to the sacred, oscillating between community attachment and the reconfiguration of religious meaning. However, the lack of formal heritage recognition raises questions about their long-term transmission: do these pilgrimages rely exclusively on local communities and ritual filiation, or are they subject to transformations influenced by evolving societal and religious contexts? By examining these three case studies, this paper explores how these practices navigate between preservation and adaptation, questioning how the sacralization of mountain spaces ensures the continuity of pilgrimages while integrating new dynamics
Benchmarking Energy and Performance of Parallel Machine Learning Models Using Hardware and Software Power Meters
The growing reliance on machine learning algorithms across domains such as healthcare, transportation, and finance has led to their increased deployment on high-performance computing platforms. While performance optimization remains a central concern, energy efficiency is emerging as a critical design consideration, particularly in light of global sustainability goals. This study presents a comparative analysis of the energy consumption and performance of serial and parallel implementations of four machine learning algorithms, K-means clustering, Ant Colony Optimization, Logistic Regression, and Random Search. Experiments were conducted on an HPC testbed using both hardware-based and software-based power meters to measure energy consumption. The results demonstrate that parallel implementations not only achieve substantial reductions in execution time but also lead to lower overall energy consumption compared to their serial counterparts
A Transfer Learning Load Adjusted Approach for Video-on-Demand Systems Given Limited Training Data
Inadequate data complicates planning and allocation of VoD resources, potentially hindering the scalability of VoD services. We propose a Transfer Learning Load Adjusted (TLLA) algorithm for resource management given limited VoD data. TLLA leverages the knowledge gained from pre-trained models by storing features and patterns that can be used to train Machine Learning (ML) related tasks. We model limitations in VoD data by proportionally freezing 50% of the neural layers in models trained from pre-trained and source domains. We evaluate the performance of the frozen neural layers by comparing them to unfrozen data. Freezing 50% of the neural layers in pre-trained model shows ≈ 80% similarity to model frozen from source data. These findings have the potential to contribute knowledge that could be utilized when inadequacies in VoD resources are encountered
Optimising AI for chemical imaging: benchmarking performance against foundation models for task-specific applications in histopathology
The integration of chemical imaging with artificial intelligence presents a compelling route toward fully digital, label-free histopathology, yet it also introduces notable challenges. While deep learning models from domains like machine vision, digital pathology, and remote sensing are readily accessible, they frequently struggle to generalize effectively to chemical imaging data, as highlighted in recent research [1]. Additionally, although foundational pathological models show potential for advancing AI-based histopathological diagnostics and prognostics, our preliminary assessments suggest they may fall short in addressing the broad spectrum of classification tasks encountered in clinical settings. In this presentation, we highlight some recent published work from our research towards developing AI for diagnostics and prognostics with chemical imaging data, and benchmark these against various foundation pathological models for task-specific applications in breast cancer
Impact of Spatial Diversity and Subject Variability on WiFi-based Human Activity Recognition
In recent years, WiFi-based Human Activity Recognition (HAR) has gained substantial attention due to the ubiquity of WiFi infrastructure and advancements in wireless communication. Unlike camera-based systems that raise privacy concerns or wearable sensors that require user compliance, WiFi-based HAR provides a noninvasive and practical alternative that operates seamlessly with existing infrastructure. WiFi-based HAR leverages fluctuations in wireless signals, particularly Channel State Information (CSI), to passively detect and classify human activities. WiFi-based HAR models often achieve high accuracy in a single environment but suffer significant performance drops when applied to new environments due to variations in spatial settings, human movement, and physical factors. This study investigates the environmental and subject-specific factors that influence the reliability and generalization of WiFi-based HAR. We systematically evaluate how room layout, signal interference, transmitter/receiver placement, subject appearance, and human proximity affect signal propagation and activity classification performance. Controlled experiments were conducted using ESP32 devices, collecting CSI data across various activity scenarios in different indoor configurations. A deep learning model combining a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with an Attention-based Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network was trained and evaluated. In initial experiments, we analyzed the effect of room layout changes. Training on one layout and testing on another led to a 7% drop in classification accuracy—from 94% to 87%—demonstrating a measurable impact of room layout on performance. These findings highlight the importance of considering day-to-day environmental changes in the design and deployment of WiFi-based HAR systems. Future work will expand on these results by investigating a broader range of influencing factors, including electronic interference, Tx/Rx positioning, and subject diversity, to improve the generalization and reliability of HAR in practical applications
J2) Impact of Tourism on Corsican’s Religion
In the 60s Corsica underwent a transformation with the rise of tourism and a new influx of population. Since then, the importance of tourism on the island has only increased to reach in 2023, 3 millions visitors, for only 350.000 inhabitants, and 39% of the Corsica’s GDP . The sheer volume of visitors is having a real impact on the Corsican way of life, not only economically but also culturally and perhaps religiously. At least that’s what we’re going to question in this communication.
9 out of 10 Corsicans claiming to be Catholic, quite quickly the Church of Corsica took up the subject. Father Gaston Pietri is thus designated “diocesan responsible for the pastoral care of tourist realities” in 1976. The tourism policy of the diocese of Ajaccio will largely concern Corsicans from the diaspora returning to the “country”, in a sacred and annual pilgrimage. This decision seems to cause a first change in the liturgical calendar with an increase in religious ceremonies during the summer months.
If this first change seems to come from the institution, and impact the spread of the ceremonies, a second one seems to change the ceremonies themselves, and comes directly from the population. This second change would come from a reaction to tourist with “spectacularization” of the rite. In this case the best example is the “Catenacciu di Sartè”. This phenomenon is reinforced by the way that tourists don’t want to see the reality, but the “authenticity” of the local culture. Through these two phenomena, who cross each other, we will try to show the impact of tourism on religion in Corsica
