Effects of Identity and Competency-Based Rejection and Acceptance on Online versus Face to Face Reaffiliation Preferences in Adults

    Get PDF
Humans are social animals, resulting in notable sensitivity to experiences of acceptance and rejection. This study extends existing research by considering whether rejection or acceptance based on identity uniquely influences reaffiliation interests. Participants recalled either an inclusionary or exclusionary experience (or a control state), which would have been based on their competency or identity. Following this experience, they indicated their interest in participating in virtual and in-person social activities. I hypothesized that identity-based rejection would foster an interest in reaffiliation through online activities due to the greater availability to join likeminded groups online compared to in person. Conversely, I hypothesized competency-based rejection participants would report a preference for face-to-face reaffiliation due to the elevated opportunities to demonstrate behavioral efficacy in-person. Contrary to predictions, competency-based acceptance elicited greater interest in face-to-face interaction than participants in other conditions. We discuss how competency-based acceptance may facilitate social confidence and risk-taking that translates to a preference in direct interaction with others

Anesthetic Management of Postpartum Hemorrhage: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination

    Get PDF
Postpartum Hemorrhage (PPH) is a low-incidence, high-mortality event. PPH is a leading cause of maternal death among women in the United States. Therefore, anesthesia providers must recognize and treat PPH effectively and efficiently. The University of Southern Mississippi’s Nurse Anesthesia Program does not have an educational tool, such as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), that students can use to learn about this emergency obstetric event. To fill this void, this DNP project aims to develop a PPH OSCE including a cognitive aid. The cognitive aid will support quick recall of life-saving interventions, reduce provider error, and improve communication. After thorough research and the development of the OSCE with a cognitive aid, ten participants voluntarily completed a survey. These ten participants were divided into two groups: Group A and Group B. Group A received information regarding the anesthetic management of PPH in a more traditional form, including a PowerPoint presentation and reading material. Group B received information via the OSCE template with the provided cognitive aid. Next, the two groups took a posttest evaluating the effectiveness of the assigned learning method in preparing the student nurse anesthetist (SRNA) to manage PPH. Once each participant completed the survey, the data collection process began. Using the T-Test method, quantitative and qualitative data was yielded to compare the differences between the two groups. Although data results revealed no significant difference between the groups, positive feedback was obtained regarding the OSCE’s impact in providing essential knowledge on PPH while instilling provider confidence

How Bitcoin Price Reacts to United States Government Public Legislation Releases

    Get PDF
Since its inception on January 3, 2009, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have grown in price and popularity. As cryptocurrencies become more well-known to the public, regulators realize that these virtual currencies need to be monitored to some extent. Governments are beginning to intervene, causing controversy among cryptocurrency users regarding whether regulation is beneficial to the industry. For Bitcoin specifically, some believe the lack of government control is a primary benefit of the technology, whereas others believe Bitcoin cannot reach its full potential without government regulation. This research seeks to discover how Bitcoin owners have reacted to news of increased United States government regulation by comparing Bitcoin’s price before and after the public legislative announcements related to cryptocurrency. The results show that Bitcoin prices are significantly lower in the five days following legislative announcements related to cryptocurrency, suggesting that current owners see decreased value in Bitcoin with increased regulation

Toward the Next Generation of Research in Adult Literacy Instruction

    Get PDF
In November 2019, the Program for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) from 2017 (Institute of Education Sciences [IES], 2019) depicted no significant change in the concerning status of adult literacy in the US. More than 52% of adults between 16 and 45 scored below functionally literate levels. While shortcomings are attributed to various factors such as high attrition rates in program, ill-conceived policy planning, and more, significant focus is placed on the impact of effective instruction. The study reviews core cognitive component theory experimentation and instructional intervention research in adult literacy to explain contributions and limitations in current research. To address limitations in research, the review further emphasizes the interdisciplinary role instructional design and technology, and associated research methods such as design-based research that may offer future research on instructional interventions for Adult Basic Education literacy

Effects of Virtual Reality as a Patient Education Tool: A Meta-analysis

    Get PDF
This meta-analysis aims to systematically review and synthesize existing literature on the effects of Virtual Reality (VR) on patient education outcomes. A comprehensive search was conducted across major academic databases. Data were extracted from 11 studies, encompassing a total sample size of 878 participants. Results from the meta-analysis revealed a significant positive effect of VR interventions on improving patient satisfaction (d = 0.39, CI [0.03,0.76],

Improving Outcomes of Patients Being Seen in the Emergency Room for Mental Health Crisis

    Get PDF
Mental health is a significant problem, especially in males aged 20 to 50 years old (Omary, 2019). Lack of a primary mental health care provider, lack of proper treatment and follow up appointments for this population, and bottlenecking patients in the emergency room are all factors that contribute to the problem. As a result, these patients experience negative outcomes such as not receiving proper care and/or causing harm to themselves or others. In this doctoral project we will explore the option of patients having better outcomes if seen immediately by a psychiatric health care provider. Having psychiatric healthcare providers in the emergency room is a luxury not many hospitals can afford. Many hospitals do not have either the funding or the staff to support this idea. However, emergency rooms with a dedicated psychiatric health care provider or a mental health care provider on call benefit greatly. This practice can reduce both readmission rates and wait times for their patients. Patients can get much needed help quickly and therefore allow emergency rooms to tend to true emergencies

Early Referral for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy for Treatment of Trauma-Induced Anxiety and Emotional Distress

    Get PDF
Trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress are significant health concerns affecting millions globally and resulting in significant healthcare burdens. Despite the considerable efforts in addressing problems, most high-risk cases often go unidentified or unaddressed promptly. Besides standard trauma diagnosis, treatment, and management protocols, some patients often require specialized support. Recently, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has emerged as a promising alternative for treating anxiety, trauma, and emotional distress conditions, yet many patients who are at high risk are often not identified early for referral. Additionally, many healthcare facilities, especially those in rural settings, fail to include appropriate screening tools. This Doctor of Nursing Practice project proposed the inclusion of a Brief Trauma Questionnaire (BTQ) screening tool and evaluated its effectiveness in increasing early identification and referral of high-risk patients for EMDR therapy. To this end, BTQ was incorporated into routine trauma assessment used at Serenity Psychiatric Outpatient, LLC, a primary care clinic located in McComb, Mississippi, for new patients with no known trauma history. Additionally, a retrospective chart review of 139 cases reported in the past three months without BTQ was carried out to compare the results. Results showed that out of 20 participants who took BTQ, 15 were identified as risk cases and referred for EMDR therapy compared to 11 who were referred from the 139 cases that were diagnosed using routine assessment protocols. These results were statistically significant (t(21) = 6.58, p \u3c 0.001), proving the effectiveness of BTQ screening tool. Furthermore, there was a significant (t (14) = 6.98, p \u3c 0.001) association between high BTQ scores and the likelihood of EMDR referral. The study findings support a wider adoption of BTQ in clinical practice for diagnosing trauma-induced anxiety and related conditions
