    Mental Health and Well-being in Academic Libraries: A Bibliometric Survey of Scholarly Publications, 1994-2024

    Academic libraries are crucial pieces of the higher education system; national accreditation standards for colleges and universities require the existence of accessible library collections and knowledgeable, trained staff. Traditionally, the academic collections, both physical and digital, of these libraries have been their focal point, and the importance of the academic library on campus has been derived from its ability to provide instructional materials and support to students, faculty, and staff. However, the educational paradigm of academic librarianship has shifted as higher education has evolved throughout the twentieth century. Previously long-established pedagogies have become insufficient in the face of changing technologies and educational expectations (Llewellyn, 2019). Institutions of higher education across the globe have shifted toward a more user/student-oriented model, and academic librarianship has had to adjust its roles accordingly. Being responsive to student information needs by offering new services and collaborations across campus has become a regular aspect of modern academic librarianship (Llewellyn, 2019). The purpose of this study is to assess the publication of articles in library and information science (LIS) scholarly journals that discuss mental health and well-being in academic libraries and to determine the extent to which such publications have changed in the 30 years between 1994 and 2024

    Evaluating the Effect of Education and Follow-up on Non-compliance With Positive Airway Pressure Devices Among Male Patients Over the Age of 50 Years Old

    Negative symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) are often the result of preventable circumstance related to the lack of adherence with positive airway pressure device (PAP) use. Research by Gabryelska et al. (2021) notes polysomnography and pap devices are the golden standards of diagnosis and treatment of OSA, yet non-compliance rates average 50% (Askland et al., 2020). Obesity, at times, is seen as a comorbid disorder with OSA, yet is not proven to be the predecessor of OSA. Chronic health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease can be exacerbated by OSA (Gabryelska et al., 2021). The goal of this doctoral project was to learn if education and follow-up are effective in the increase of compliance with PAP use. Askland et al. (2020) provides evidence that compliance to PAP device use can be positively influenced by support, behavioral modification, education, and regular follow-up. To address increasing pap adherence Magnan (2021) references the use of the Plan Do Study Act (PDSA) cycle. The PDSA cycle is a problem-solving model utilized to either improve a process or carry out a change. In this doctoral project the PDSA cycle improved the process of managing compliance in patients with OSA. The sample size of the doctoral project was seven males over 50 years of age and diagnosed with OSA. These participants were referred for participation in the project by their primary care provider. All participants signed treatment consent forms authorizing access their health record and the publication of their study results without noting their names. The result of the project showed participants achieved 47% compliance with their PAP device. The clinic referring the participants expressed that the project offered a good protocol and is considering adopting the doctoral project interventions as a part of the clinic’s protocol for managing OSA device compliance

    A Systematic Review of the Viola palmata Species Complex in the Gulf Coastal Plain and Southern Appalachians

    The Viola palmata species complex (Violaceae) consists of one to several species of acaulescent, heterophyllous, blue violets that are native to most of eastern North America. This study was conducted in order to evaluate the variation within the V. palmata species complex in the southeastern United States and to determine whether consistent morphological, genetic, and/or ecological patterns exist across identified morphotypes. Both quantitative morphological measurements and qualitative observations were made using both herbarium specimens and live specimens kept in a common garden in a greenhouse. These measurements included characters from the lobed leaves, chasmogamous flowers, and cleistogamous seeds. Multiple nDNA and cpDNA regions were amplified, sequenced, and analyzed for phylogenetic analysis; four microsatellite loci were amplified, run on a gel for detection and sizing of alleles, and analyzed for population and/or geographic patterns. At each population, soil characteristics including soil texture, pH, percent organic matter, and environmental parameters including slope degree, slope aspect, and geographic coordinates were recorded for analysis. Statistical analyses of morphological characters all revealed at least some degree of quantitative separation among all identified morphotypes and the broader V. palmata. DNA data were phylogenetically uninformative, likely due to the effects of hybridization, concerted evolution, and/or minimal variation among sequences. Analysis of microsatellite loci did show separation among individuals classified as Viola palmata and of other morphotypes. Measured soil and ecological characteristics showed no statistically significant variation among sampled populations. Overall, all identified morphotypes warrant further systematic investigation and formal description

    Investigation of Polybenzoxazine Vitrimers Based on Dynamic Transesterification Exchange

    With the ever-increasing issue of plastic waste production, a greener approach to synthetic processes and increased sustainability in plastic materials is still a high demand. Thermosets, which find uses in applications such as coatings, adhesives, and aerospace composites account for 15% of global plastics production, are particularly problematic in this context, as covalent crosslinks within the material serve both as a source of high-performance stability during use and as a barrier to conventional recycling after use. Therefore, our efforts focus on the incorporation of dynamic transesterification exchange chemistry into polybenzoxazine thermosets, which allows these materials to undergo reprocessing. This investigation highlights the synthesis of novel benzoxazine monomers capable of forming vitrimeric networks and the structure property relationships based on monomer design flexibility. A series of benzoxazine monomer libraries were synthesized to evaluate the structure property relationships based on key factors such as amine selection, ester concentration, and dynamic and non-dynamic functionalities. The thermomechanical and mechanical properties of the resulting networks were evaluated and correlated to the monomer structure. The dynamic behavior of the polybenzoxazine networks was assessed with respect to the topological rearrangement temperature, activation energy, and relaxation times. Reprocessability of the networks were highlighted in Chapter III, revealing retention of thermomechanical properties and reusability of the materials. Flexibility in properties are shown in the networks in Chapter IV, highlighting materials with dynamic capabilities, variable mechanical strengths, and flame resistance. Finally, novel polybenzoxazine vitrimer networks are synthesized in Chapter V, revealing the use of variation in monomer design to further tune and understand dynamic exchang
