Perspectives of Using Artificial Intelligence as an Automated Knowledge Assessment Instrument
Knowledge assessment is an integral part of learning and teaching that requires considerable amounts of instructors’ time and effort. This study aims to evaluate the prospects of artificial intelligence (AI) for automated knowledge assessment and identify the factors that influence its perception and value. An experiment with a reference implementation of a grading and automated feedback generation system is performed. Based on the results, a survey with 16 university students who regularly use AI is conducted and analyzed through a thematic analysis method. The findings reveal that availability, knowledge breadth, and elimination of social barriers have positive influence on preference towards AI feedback while specificity, actionability, and encouragement positively influence its perceived usefulness. Excessive length, lack of contextual awareness, and impersonal responses were among the main negative factors. Despite readiness to receive AI feedback, respondents have expressed preference towards feedback from a teacher and revealed the preferred use of AI tools for productivity-enhancing and clerical tasks. The findings confirm that the role of AI in knowledge assessment is in complementing the process rather than substituting the teacher’s role in it
Investigating the Impact of Game-Based Immersive Learning on Nursing Students\u27 Communication Skills and Attitudes Toward Serving in Underserved Communities
Many nursing education programs incorporated service learning, particularly community immersion, into the curriculum to improve students’ communication skills and foster favorable attitudes towards caring underserved populations who face health disparities delivery. However, the teaching modality in community immersion is still lecturing sessions. This traditional teaching modality could not fully address the learning preferences of the new generation of nursing students, who are enthusiastic consumers of technology and active participants in the digital world. There is a demand of innovative teaching strategies, such as game-based learning (GBL), to engage the new generation of nursing students. Unfortunately, empirical studies of exploring the potential of GBL in teaching communication skills are quite limited in literature. This study aims to bridge the research gap by developing a game-based immersive learning course to teach nursing students communication skills and foster attitudes toward providing care in underserved communities. A mixed-methods approach with convergent parallel design was used in this study. The quantitative phase employed the one-group posttest-only design and the qualitative phase used case study design. Nine students participated in this pilot study. Results showed that more than 70% of students developed favorable attitudes and over 80% gained confidence in their communication skills. Findings also revealed multifaceted influences stemming from various components of the game-based immersive learning experience, including enjoyment and motivation, self-directed and active learning, peer learning and support, community mentorship and role modeling. Game-based immersive learning has positive impact on nursing students’ communication skills and attitudes toward care in underserved communities

Vietnamese EFL Lecturers’ Perceptions of the Role of ChatGPT in Facilitating Language Acquisition Among Their Students
This qualitative study investigates the perceptions of Vietnamese EFL teachers regarding the role of ChatGPT in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Amidst the growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, this research focuses on understanding how educators at different career stages perceive the effectiveness of ChatGPT in enhancing language learning experiences. Employing semi-structured interviews, the study engaged nine teachers from two educational institutions in Vietnam. Thematic analysis, guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Constructivist Theory of Learning, revealed multiple roles of ChatGPT in SLA. These include its use as a conversational partner, a tool for immediate feedback, a facilitator of cultural exposure, and an enhancer of linguistic competence. Additionally, ChatGPT was recognized for supplementing traditional teaching methods, encouraging self-directed learning, personalizing learning experiences, and providing diverse language exposure. Further roles included bridging communication gaps, simulating real-world scenarios, and fostering continuous learning, motivation, and engagement. The study highlights the potential of AI tools like ChatGPT to transform language teaching methodologies, offering more interactive, engaging, and personalized learning experiences. This study contributes valuable insights into the evolving landscape of technology-enhanced language education and the roles AI can play in enriching SLA practices
Measuring Emotion in Education Using GSR and HR Data from Wearable Devices
The pivotal role of emotions in education is universally recognized, leading to a surge of interest in emotion recognition. Wearable devices that collect real-time and nuanced subjective physiological data make it possible to delve into the intricate emotional dynamics in education. Nevertheless, there is a dearth of research exploring its potential role in tracking the emotional shifts among students of varying levels in response to specific pedagogical strategies in face-to-face chess classroom. By analyzing both objective GSR and HR data from wearable devices and subjective data from students and teachers in chess classrooms, students at different levels had experienced distinct emotions for the same pedagogical actions. Consequently, teachers should pay more attention to grasping the teaching content of students at different levels, adjusting the difficulty of challenges accordingly, and employing brackets and prompts at appropriate times for challenging assignments. These insights not only demonstrate the feasibility of data analysis model of wearable devices but also serve as a springboard for inquiries aimed at elucidating the mechanisms and motivations behind students’ fluctuations in response to more specific pedagogical actions in education
An Educational Framework for the Disruptive Technologies and their Integration in the UN SDGs Curriculum
Disruptive technologies such as 5G, AI, IoT, cloud computing, and blockchain are revolutionizing life on our planet and at the same time contributing immensely towards sustainable development and the achievement of the UN SDGs. Nowadays, optimizing the management of resources in various fields such as manufacturing, education, health, transportation etc. in a much more efficient way is possible. This can be achieved by capturing a wealth of real-time data via IoT sensors with the ultra-reliable and low latency connections provided by 5G. Additionally, with cloud computing, blockchain, and AI, these real-time systems can securely transmit, store, and analyze a massive amount of data. These disruptive technologies can in fact contribute directly to several SDGs; for example, SDG 1 by helping poverty reduction through mobile money and SDG 2 by boosting food production using IoT and AI. Of paramount importance is to design an appropriate educational curriculum for these disruptive technologies and the UN SDGs. This paper reviews the impact of these technologies on the UN SDGs and provides insights on the design of an educational curriculum for the disruptive technologies and how it can be integrated in the curriculum of the UN SDGs. It was found that AI is the most dominant disruptive technology that must be included in the curriculum of all the UN SDGs followed by IoT and 5G which provide significant ubiquity in different UN SDG applications. Also recommended is to integrate advanced skill levels to be incorporated in the UN SDG curriculum for technologies such as IoT and 5G intermediate skill levels are sufficient for most SDGs
I Know What You Did Last Summer: A Look at the New Administrative Features and Updates in the Figshare Platform
2024 saw many new features and enhancements to the Figshare repository platform. Many of these were guided by feedback from institutions using Figshare. In this presentation, we will use real-world examples to demonstrate what’s new and discuss what’s next. Some of the major updates include brand new interfaces for both repository configurations and the review/curation workflow, an access confirmation feature, more editing options for researcher profiles, and the ability to upload entire folder structures with file previews. Attendees will learn how to access more information on Figshare’s capabilities and get a global perspective on repository practices
A Decade of SMIRC: What Now and What Next?
In this session, we will briefly reflect on the past 10 years of the Southern Miss Institutional Repository Conference (SMIRC) and how it has evolved over time. We will consider some of the major topics and themes that the conference has addressed, as well as the lessons learned over the past decade. More specifically, we will consider what the conference has taught us about the role of the modern institutional repository. In an era where some have questioned the ongoing relevance of the IR, what has SMIRC taught us about the way that different universities are continuing to use their IR as a significant part of their digital scholarship efforts? We will also consider what the current landscape may mean for the future of IRs in general, as well as the future of SMIRC
Down with the Tyranny of Bean Counting: Setting Goals and Measuring Outcomes with USU\u27s IR
Traditional IR reporting often focuses on quantitative metrics like the number of items added to the repository. While this approach offers a snapshot of activity, it fails to capture the impact of IR efforts on research, teaching, and scholarly communication. This presentation will discuss our journey to shift from a bean-counting approach to a goal-oriented framework. We will explore our process of identifying meaningful goals, selecting relevant metrics, and making necessary data adjustments to track progress. By sharing our experiences and lessons learned, we aim to inspire other IR professionals to adopt a more strategic and outcome-focused approach to measuring success
Mathematical Melodies: The Exploration of Music Using Fourier Signal Analysis
Upon initial inspection, mathematics and music appear to be distinct disciplines lacking any connections to one another. However, many complex intersections lie beneath the surface. This paper seeks to explore these connections through the analysis of the Fourier series and the Fourier transformation of musical sound signals. Orthogonal functions of various frequencies are used to approximate and recover sound signals. Following the examination of the basis of Fourier signal analysis, MATLAB is utilized to visualize the connectedness of mathematics and music through sound signals from varied musical instruments and by performing Fourier signal analysis to the sound signals. Then, the observations of the MATLAB implementation are discussed and compared. Finally, the effectiveness and limitations of the research are discussed in addition to potential future directions for the research
