Assessing Artificial Intelligence-Powered Responses to Common Patient Questions on Radiofrequency Ablation and Cryoanalgesia for Chronic Pain

    No full text
Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and cryoanalgesia are minimally invasive procedures used when conservative medical management fails and there are positive diagnostic blocks. Although both radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and cryoanalgesia are straightforward techniques, the increasing workload of physicians is leading to less time available for patient interaction, including addressing questions about indications, feasibility, long-term effectiveness, and potential complications. Generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots, such as ChatGPT, have the potential to reduce physician burden and enhance patient education. Methods: An expert panel compiled thirteen frequently asked questions about RFA and cryoanalgesia, which were subsequently submitted to ChatGPT-4.0. The AI-generated responses were evaluated by 41 participants, including pain physicians, healthcare professionals, and non-healthcare individuals. The Likert scale was used for evaluating the responses, focusing on reliability, accuracy, and comprehensibility using predefined acceptability thresholds. Results: Across all 13 questions, ChatGPT’s responses demonstrated high overall reliability, with a mean score of 4.9 ± 0.7. The mean accuracy score was 2.6 ± 0.3, suggesting alignment with evidence-based standards. Comprehensibility was rated at 2.7 ± 0.2 on average. Pre-procedural questions achieved the highest scores, while post-procedural questions posed more challenges for ChatGPT. Conclusions: ChatGPT demonstrated potential as an adjunct tool for patient education on RFA and cryoanalgesia. Improvements in procedural specificity and medical accuracy are needed before routine clinical implementation

Wastewater-Based Surveillance of Human Adenoviruses in Italy: Quantification by Digital PCR and Molecular Typing via Nanopore Amplicon Sequencing

    No full text
Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) offers valuable insight into viral circulation at the community level. In this study, we combined digital PCR (dPCR) with molecular typing to investigate the prevalence and diversity of human adenoviruses (HAdVs) in untreated wastewater samples collected throughout Italy. HAdV genomes were detected in over 93% of the 168 samples analyzed, with concentrations up to 4.5 × 106 genome copies per liter. For genotypic characterization, we used nested PCR followed by Sanger and Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONTs) long-read sequencing. While Sanger sequencing identified three dominant genotypes (HAdV-A12, HAdV-B3, and HAdV-F41), ONT sequencing provided enhanced resolution, confirming all previously identified types and revealing seven additional genotypes: HAdV-B21, HAdV-C5, HAdV-D45, HAdV-D46, HAdV-D49, HAdV-D83, and HAdV-F40. This comprehensive approach highlights the added value of ONT long-read sequencing in uncovering the genetic complexity of adenoviruses in wastewater, particularly in detecting rare or low abundance types that conventional methods may miss. Our findings highlight the value of integrating quantitative and high-resolution molecular tools in WBE to improve surveillance and better understand the epidemiology of viral pathogens circulating in the human population

Riqualificazione e rinascita di un borgo:“U Rumit” di Satriano di Lucania

    No full text

The Impact of the Family Kinship Structure and Maternal Empowerment on the Education of Daughters in Malawi

This research examines the theoretical and empirical relationship between women's power and children's years of schooling in Malawi using the Integrated Household Panel Survey (IHPS-2010-2013-2016). To investigate the trade-off between schooling and domestic productivity, we build a model of household decision-making that takes into account the type of customary law (of the family) as well as parents' preferences about the gender of their children. We develop a female power index (FPI), which measures each woman's intra-household decision-making within her family, and then test-empirically- the theoretical results through a random effects estimation. Our findings imply that women's power improves daughters' education, and that the education level differs according to the family's kinship structure. In fact, in a matrilineal system, if the mother has more power, the daughter gets more in terms of years of education, but in patrilineal systems a woman's authority alone is not sufficient to reach the same results.
