Tort Rules and Regulatory Sandboxes: The Influence of the National Jurisdictions

    No full text
In the legal framework governing regulatory sandboxes, the AI Act devotes only a single paragraph to non-contractual liability, stating that European and national rules apply to providers. However, this choice opens potential scenarios for diverging applications by national courts on the liability of the conducts within the sandbox, which should be considered in light of the different legal models of the single Member States, and which could jeopardize the harmonization process. Furthermore, considering the applicable regulations, consideration should also be given to the proposal to amend the Product Liability Directive, which includes AI systems within its scope. This proposal leans toward a strict liability model or a framework where, through the reversal of the burden of proof, fault plays a limited role, as seen in the proposed AI Liability Directive. The present paper suggests that, in the case of regulatory sandboxes, fault-based liability should apply during the experimental phase in order to not to discourage a developing market and to allow newcos without significant financial investments to access the experimental phase.

Energy hubs components and operation: State-of-the-art review

    No full text
In recent years, increasing energy demand, greenhouse gas emissions, and the depletion of fossil fuel reserves have created a vital need for a framework that brings effective energy costs while minimizing environmental impact. Strategists have required a novel approach to address these challenges. The energy hub is an innovative concept designed to alter energy management, optimize systems and advance sustainable multi-energy solutions. Founding a robust scheduling framework based on the energy hub model is crucial. This study focuses on two key aspects: investigating the components and structure of energy hubs and examining the operation and factors influencing them. Additionally, it evaluates energy hub flexibility through a thorough analysis of short-term and long-term considerations, such as energy storage systems, energy resources, electric vehicles, and computational methods. Various approaches to enhance energy hub flexibility are explored. The findings confirm the significant potential of the energy hub paradigm. By integrating renewable energy, storage facilities, electric vehicles, and optimized management techniques, the energy hub model emerges as a powerful tool to increase the electricity grid's adaptability. In the field of power systems, it represents a vital step towards sustainable energy solutions with profound implications for industry and academia

“The Virgin with the Book at Breedon-on-the-Hill (Leicestershire)”

    No full text
Immured in the Priory Church of St Mary and St Hardulph at Breedon-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire, is a stone relief with a half-length representation of the Virgin Mary (Fig. 21.1). It is part of the largest group of sculpted reliefs from the early medieval kingdom of Mercia. She is veiled and has no nimbus; she imparts a blessing to the beholder with a disproportionately enlarged right hand, which also points to a book she reverently holds in her veiled left hand. She is framed by an arch supported by colonnettes and plain capitals. It has been suggested that her “hieratic frontality”, staring gaze, and the drapery style may be derived from seventh-century Byzantine icons. Yet, the iconography of this relief, let alone the emphasis on the hand pointing to the book, is not found in Byzantine art and remains highly unusual to the point that not all scholars who have dealt with it believe it to be a representation of the Virgin. In fact, in the conventional Byzantine half-length iconography of the Virgin known as Hodegetria, ‘The One who shows the Way’, she holds the Christ Child in one arm while pointing to him with the other, indicating the Saviour, the way to Salvation. At Breedon a book takes the place of the Child. That being the case, is the relief in Breedon to be seen as a variation of the Hodegetria, or a Mercian rendition of an earlier, lost model, or an invention of early medieval England? What might its historical context suggest

This paper examines the coinage of Paestum from the foundation of the Latin colony in 273 BC to the closure of its mint under Tiberius, highlighting the institutional, economic, and cultural transformations tied to the city’s Romanization. The analysis is based on a thorough typological and metrological study of the first silver and bronze issues, which are grouped into three major phases, each with distinct weight standards and iconographic schemes. The distribution of coin finds—spanning Campania, Lucania, Apulia, and Sicily—points to both local and interregional circulation. Comparative data from other colonies and municipalities in central and southern Italy suggest the existence of an interconnected, albeit locally autonomous, monetary system. Finally, the paper underlines the persistent administrative autonomy of the Paestum mint even after the sextantal reform of 211 BC, revealing a gradual and multifaceted process of integration into the Roman monetary framework

State of health assessment of Li-ion batteries using a multiple linear regression model

In this study, we investigate the impact of peak area in the incremental capacity curve, current, temperature, and charge capacity on battery performance through a regression model. We employ data from the University of Michigan Battery Lab to characterise the degradation of lithium-ion pouch cells under different cycling conditions. We propose two linear regression models, with and without interaction terms, to describe the relationships between the battery capacity and three independent variables: the test current, the temperature of the battery, and the area under the main peak of the IC curve. The results show that the inclusion of interaction terms in the model significantly improves the accuracy of the model, especially under varying thermal and current conditions
