    The purpose of this paper is to provide a profile of Chantelle Garth. Using a case study approach, Chantelle provides a short account of her background and is then interviewed by Jerome. Chantelle gives an account of her very troubled childhood and adolescence. Her adult life has been no easier. Life is a continuous challenge. It is hard to imagine a tougher life than Chantelle’s, yet her ambition has carried her through. A single account, yet one of the most powerful accounts in this series. There are few better accounts of resilience in the face of at times what seem like insurmountable obstacles. The belief that can be instilled by a single professional can have a profound effect in encouraging someone facing adversity. There are numerous accounts of individuals facing difficulties in life, then there is Chantelle’s. This is in a category of its own

    The Potential for Bio-Sustainable Organobromine-Containing Flame Retardant Formulations for Textile Applications - A Review

    This review considers the challenge of developing sustainable organobromine flame retardants (BrFRs) and alternative synergists to the predominantly used antimony III oxide. Current BrFR effciencies are reviewed for textile coatings and back-coatings with a focus on furnishing and similar fabrics covering underlying flammable fillings, such as flexible polyurethane foam. The diffculty of replacing them with non-halogen-containing systems is also reviewed with major disadvantages including their extreme specificity with regard to a given textile type and poor durability.The possibility of replacing currently used BrFRs for textiles structures that mimic naturally occurring organobromine-containing species is discussed, noting that of the nearly 2000 such species identified in both marine and terrestrial environments, a significant number are functionalised polybrominated diphenyl ethers, which form part of a series of little understood biosynthetic biodegradation cycles.The continued use of antimony III oxide as synergist and possible replacement by alternatives, such as the commercially available zinc stannates and the recently identified zinc tungstate, are discussed. Both are effective as synergists and smoke suppressants, but unlike Sb203, they have effciencies dependent on BrFR chemistry and polymer matrix or textile structure. Furthermore, their effectiveness in textile coatings has yet to be more fully assessed.In conclusion, it is proposed that the future of sustainable BrFRs should be based on naturally occurring polybrominated structures developed in conjunction with non-toxic, smoke-suppressing synergists such as the zinc stannates or zinc tungstate, which have been carefully tailored for given polymeric and textile substrates

    Exploring the experience of mental health in childhood and adolescence

    The research aim for this dissertation is to explore the impact that mental health can have on individuals in terms of emotional and social wellbeing. In order to achieve this a library based secondary study was conducted exploring sixteen research articles. Each of the sixteen articles was reviewed in order to discover: the main aim, methodology, methods and the main findings. The main findings of this study are brought together into five key themes: funding, the experience of parents, vulnerable groups, transitioning from child and adolescent services to adult services and the links to social media and screen time. Each theme represents a common issue in the research of mental health in childhood and adolescence

    Measuring forgiveness: Psychometric properties of a new culturally sensitive questionnaire. The Bolton Forgiveness Scale (BFS) - Submitted version

    Forgiveness is a construct experienced by all people across the world. Hence, it is vital for a forgiveness measure to ensure good and diverse cultural representation and inclusivity in its development, validation and usage. The 15-item Bolton Forgiveness scale (BFS) was developed to assess dispositional forgiveness. Items for the scale came from interviews with 53 Nigerian and British people, from existing scales and from the research literature. In the subsequent three part study, exploratory factor analysis with a student sample (N= 733) formed part one. Confirmatory factor analysis with a general sample (N= 2,017) was part two. This indicated a robust three factor structure. The three factors were; coming to terms and letting go (CTLG), developing positive feelings (DPF) and giving benefit of the doubt (GBD). In part three, the BFS was administered along with the Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Questionnaire, the Heartland Forgiveness Scale, the Positive and Negative Affect Scales and the mental health measures used by the Office of National Statistics. Finally, the current study provides a forgiveness definition as a process that involves developing and strengthening the capacity to give benefit of the doubt that enables the offended to come to terms with and let go of hurt with its negative affect thereby giving way gradually to positive feelings towards the transgressor. This measure offers a new culturally sensitive questionnaire to assess dispositional forgiveness. Keywords; Forgiveness, Culture, Questionnaire, Psychometrics

    Disordered eating and body image in adolescents with type 1 diabetes

    The period of adolescence and a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes increase the risk of eating disorders, and specifically disordered eating behaviours, which have a significant impact on blood glucose levels and can result in short- and longterm complications. The necessary focus on dietary intake, portion precision and carbohydrate counting as part of the management of their diabetes can result in adolescents developing a fixation on food, a negative body image, and ‘dialbulimia’. Eating disorders are common in girls but also occurs in boys and is often under recognised. This article describes the links between body image and disordered eating behaviours and considers how recognition and treatment can be improved in practice

    The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) recognises the important contribution that nursing students are making to the national response to the COVID-19 pandemic. This article reports on the Greater Manchester Supervision and Delegation Framework, providing practical guidance for students and practice staff (practice supervisor/practice assessor and registered nurse) on how to support student nurses who have opted into a paid (deployed) healthcare role. The framework operationalises NMC emergency standards for Nursing and Midwifery education, enabling students to complete their pre-registration undergraduate or postgraduate nursing programme while also supporting the healthcare workforce ( NMC, 2020 )

    Hydroxypropyl modified /organosolv lignin - biobased polyamide blend filaments as carbon fibre precursors

    Hydroxypropyl modified lignin (TcC) and organosolv lignin (TcA) were melt blended with two types of bio-based polyamides (PA) (PA1010 and PA1012) before being melt spun into filaments. With a lignin/bio-PA ratio 50/50 wt.%, the filaments could be continuously produced and spooled having tensile strengths ≥20 MPa and moduli ≥500MPa. The influence of each polyamide blended with each lignin on structural (FTIR), thermal (DSC, TGA, DMA), mechanical, rheological and morphological properties of the resultant extrudates and/or filaments were studied. The melting point of each polyamide was reduced in the presence of TcA and TcC lignin and, shifts in the glass transition temperature (Tg) and FTIR characteristic peaks occurred, which suggests that the selected polyamides and lignins are compatible with each other.The improved lignin/polyamide compatibilities were further supported by Pukanszky interfacial adhesion modelling. Despite the evidence for strong interactions, heterogeneous morphologies were observed in the resulting blends and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to determine dispersed lignin domain sizes which decreased when stronger lignin/polyamide interactions resulted. As a possible indicator of carbonisation efficiencies, blends were subjected to a simulated stabilisation/cross-linking process and subsequent TGA char residues were higher than those theoretically calculated at 880oC, indicating that the bio-polyamide acted as a char-promoting agent for the lignin besides being a good blending partner. Overall, this study has indicated that the developed lignin/bio-polyamide filaments have potential as melt-extrudable precursors for carbon fibre production

    Super-resolution of real-world rock microcomputed tomography images using cycle-consistent generative adversarial networks

    Digital rock imaging plays an important role in studying the microstructure and macroscopic properties of rocks, where microcomputed tomography (MCT) is widely used. Due to the inherent limitations of MCT, a balance should be made between the field of view (FOV) and resolution of rock MCT images—a large FOV at low resolution (LR) or a small FOV at high resolution (HR). However, large FOV and HR are both expected for reliable analysis results in practice. Super-resolution (SR) is an effective solution to break through the mutual restriction between the FOV and resolution of rock MCT images, for it can reconstruct an HR image from a LR observation. Most of the existing SR methods cannot produce satisfactory HR results on real-world rock MCT images. One of the main reasons for this is that paired images are usually needed to learn the relationship between LR and HR rock images. However, it is challenging to collect such a dataset in a real scenario. Meanwhile, the simulated datasets may be unable to accurately reflect the model in actual applications. To address these problems, we propose a cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (CycleGAN)-based SR approach for real-world rock MCT images, namely, SRCycleGAN. In the off-line training phase, a set of unpaired rock MCT images is used to train the proposed SRCycleGAN, which can model the mapping between rock MCT images at different resolutions. In the on-line testing phase, the resolution of the LR input is enhanced via the learned mapping by SRCycleGAN. Experimental results show that the proposed SRCycleGAN can greatly improve the quality of simulated and real-world rock MCT images. The HR images reconstructed by SRCycleGAN show good agreement with the targets in terms of both the visual quality and the statistical parameters, including the porosity, the local porosity distribution, the two-point correlation function, the lineal-path function, the two-point cluster function, the chord-length distribution function, and the pore size distribution. Large FOV and HR rock MCT images can be obtained with the help of SRCycleGAN. Hence, this work makes it possible to generate HR rock MCT images that exceed the limitations of imaging systems on FOV and resolution
