Technical review by the ESPGHAN Special Interest Group on Gut Microbiota and Modifications on the health outcomes of infant formula supplemented with synbiotic
This technical review—one of five developed by the European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) Special Interest Group on Gut Microbiota and Modifications (SIG-GMM)—supports the preparation of a position paper on the use of biotic- and synbiotic-supplemented infant formulas. This paper also presents the statements made by the SIG-GMM after performing a technical review to evaluate the clinical effects of synbiotic-supplemented infant formulas in healthy full-term infants (0–12 months), as emerged from studies published before 2024. The review focused on the following clinical outcomes (if available): anthropometric measurements, safety, tolerability, stool frequency and consistency, infantile colic or crying, gastrointestinal symptoms, infections and antibiotic use, and allergic disorders. Following the review, all members of the SIG anonymously voted on each statement, scoring them between 0 and 9. A statement was accepted when ≥75% of the members scored >6. The technical review identified 16 randomized controlled trials that evaluated the clinical effects of synbiotic-supplemented infant formula in healthy full-term infants. The studies varied in terms of synbiotic composition, study design, intervention duration, and outcomes. Formulas supplemented with synbiotics studied so far were well tolerated and showed no significant difference compared to the non-supplemented formulas in growth parameters, gastrointestinal symptoms, stool characteristics, or safety. This technical review serves as the background for formulating recommendations on the use of synbiotic-supplemented infant formula in healthy infants studied so far
The Neo-Kantian Reception of Schiller
During the second half of the nineteenth century, several members of the Neo-Kantian movement became interested in
Schiller. For the first time, he was regarded not only as a poet and dramatist, but also as a philosopher – and, above all, as a Kantian philosopher. The authors of the contributions collected in this book reconstruct how various Neo-Kantian thinkers engaged with Schiller. Thus, the book illuminates the pivotal role that neo-Kantianism played in the discovery of Schiller’s philosophy as well as the pivotal role that Schiller’s philosophy played in the shaping of neo-Kantianism
“The Realm of Shadows”: the Presence of Schiller in Cassirer’s Philosophy of Science
To the best of my knowledge, Schiller’s name rarely appears in studies devoted
to Cassirer’s philosophy of science. This is unsurprising, as Schiller is not among
Cassirer’s principal references in this domain. Nevertheless, I shall argue that if
Schiller’s thought is essential for understanding the neo-Kantian reinterpretation of
Kant1, it is reasonable to maintain that Schiller had bearing on Cassirer’s philosophy
of science. This influence is evident in two of Cassirer’s central commitments: (i) the
rejection of the copy theory of knowledge – that is, the notion that knowledge results
from an abstract process aimed at reproducing reality ‘as it is’ –; and (ii) the development
of Cassirer’s holism, arising from the generalisation of the understanding’s
spontaneity in constructing representations of reality.
Regarding methodology and structure, the paper offers a historical reconstruction
and contextualisation of Cassirer’s explicit references to Schiller in his epistemological
writings, drawing on Cassirer’s works on Schiller only as an auxiliary
resource to illuminate these references. The discussion is organised into five sections.
The first examines early mentions of Schiller, dating back to 1907. The second explores
how Schiller’s ideas contribute to explaining theoretical holism. The third
analyses the reference that provides the title of this paper, found in Cassirer’s work
on Einstein’s theory of relativity. The fourth briefly considers Cassirer’s engagement
with Schiller in Determinismus und Indeterminismus and his appeal to his thought
in defending the moral autonomy of human agents. The fifth section presents the
concluding remarks
Self-extinguishing and hydrophobic epoxy composites containing hydrothermal liquefaction-derived biochar and whisker-like particles based on tailored PVP-coated silica fibers
The hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of waste biomass produces bio-oil along with solid, aqueous, and gaseous co-products. The utilization of solid residue (biochar) is a crucial step in achieving the sustainability and circularity of the entire HTL process. Here, we propose the valorization of biochar derived from HTL of municipal sewage sludge as a functional additive for epoxy resins to enhance their flame retardancy. Biochar samples from HTL, obtained under different operative conditions, were characterized and incorporated into an epoxy resin cured with a cycloaliphatic amine. Biochar was used in combination with whisker-like particles, made of silica coated with electrospun poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) and functionalized to enhance compatibility with the polymer matrix. The synergy of these fillers with ammonium polyphosphate and urea enabled the preparation of no-drip self-extinguishing composites (V0 rating at UL-94 vertical flame spread tests), showing excellent fire performance, as assessed by cone calorimetry and pyrolysis combustion flow calorimetry, with a limited effect on the viscoelastic behavior and some impact on the flexural properties. Notably, a strong flame retardant action in the condensed phase, with a slight effect in the gas phase, was responsible for the formation of a ceramic continuous char, which decreased the peak of the heat release rate (∼36%) as well as the total smoke release (∼10%) during the burning process. Besides, the tailored whisker-like particles were able to migrate at the surface of composites, providing water contact angles of ∼120°, suggesting a potential use of the designed materials as water-proof protective coatings or components for multifunctional infrastructures
Effect of beneficial microbes applications on nutritional profiles of organic tomatoes revealed by LC-MS-qTOF metabolomics
BACKGROUND The use of microorganisms and biostimulants is increasingly supported in agriculture because of their advantageous impact on plant disease management, growth enhancement and the synthesis of beneficial bioactive secondary metabolites (SMs). Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is an important crop and is consumed worldwide because it is an excellent source of natural compounds (i.e. beta-carotene and flavonoids) and minerals useful for human health. Although the positive effects of individual microbial applications are well-documented, the impact of microbial consortia is underexplored. RESULTS In this study, the improvement of nutritional value of tomato (S. lycopersicum var. Heinz), by use of beneficial microorganisms, including selected strains of Streptomyces microflavus (S), Trichoderma harzianum (M10) and Trichoderma afroharzianum (T22), has been investigated. These microbes were applied on tomato plants, either as single inoculants or as microbial consortia. The effects were evaluated through statistical analysis of biological parameters. T22 treatments exhibited a significant increase in plant height (107.30 cm) compared to both control and M10-based treatments (104.30 and 102.80 cm, respectively). The similarities observed in plant height between S-treated plants (105.70 cm) and those treated with the combination of S and T22 (106.60 cm) highlight the potential beneficial effects of microbial consortia. Moreover, the berries were subjected to an untargeted metabolomic analysis by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-quadrupole-time of flight that led to the identification of eighteen metabolites, including tomatine and its derivatives solafloridine. Multivariate analysis demonstrated differences in berries metabolic profiles, depending on the treatment applied. Specifically, T22-based treatment increased the accumulation of most of the identified metabolites compared to untreated plants, whereas combined treatment S + T22 induced a major accumulation of solafloridine. CONCLUSION Field microbial applications significantly induced the metabolic profile change of tomato and the accumulation of metabolites with nutraceutical value
