Do environmental crimes contribute to air pollution? Empirical evidence and effects on health
This paper investigates the effect of environmental crimes on ambient air pollution in Italy, using annual provincial data over the period 2010–2016. While the impact of ambient air pollution on health has been the focus of a significant amount of literature, a nascent body of works is focusing on the impact of illegal behavior on environmental quality. Our work is ideally divided in two steps: firstly, we identify and assess empirically the potential correlation between environmental crimes and four different kinds of ambient air pollution. Secondly, we identify the health impacts that may be triggered by environmentally harmful illegal activities, through their impact on ambient air pollution, by linking them to existing contributions. Our findings suggest that the existence of such an “indirect” link may indeed be confirmed. We find that higher levels of PM2.5, PM10, and O3 concentration are associated with higher levels of environmental crimes related to forest fires and landscape violations (except for PM10 in the latter case), while NO2 concentration is not significantly associated with any environmental crime. On the other hand, we also find non-linearities in the estimated correlations. We conclude our analysis by providing a straightforward quantification of health-related impacts of ambient air pollution changes potentially triggered by criminal environmental behaviors. We hope that our findings could contribute to a more accurate evaluation of environmental crime impacts and, subsequently, inform future criminal environmental enforcement and environmental policies

Comparative Analysis of Mechanically Induced Long Period Gratings Using Different 3D Printed Grooved Structure Shapes
This study deals with mechanically induced long period fiber gratings (MILPGs). First, an in-depth analysis of the most effective grating configuration of a grooved structure featuring a duty cycle of 40:60 using SMF- 28 is provided. Subsequently, a comparative analysis of MILPGs developed in various multi-layered optical fibers, including double cladding fibers with doped and pure-silica core as well as solid core photonic crystal fiber is presented. The demonstrated fabrication method highlights its adaptability for various types of fibers, eliminating the need for supplementary equipment or modifications, and operates independently of photosensitive fibers which marks the novelty of this work
Navigating the Transition to Green Mobility: Assessing the Impact of Tax Incentives on Vehicle Efficiency and Market Dynamics in Italy
The transportation sector is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring the need for innovative fiscal measures to promote decarbonisation. This study evaluates the efficiency of car models based on price, emissions, and technical specifications, while examining the impact of fiscal policies on the adoption of green vehicles in Italy. A two-stage Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was conducted utilising a comprehensive database of new cars registered in 2019, categorised by market segments. The results indicate a paradox: the most efficient cars are not necessarily the most environmentally friendly. Furthermore, while green cars are available in smaller segments, their prices often exceed those of comparable conventional cars by 100%. This highlights the need for eco-bonus adjustments that consider factors beyond CO2 emissions. Additionally, promoting environmentally friendly cars in higher-end segments could drive innovation, reduce costs, and advance the automotive industry's transition to sustainability

critiche in dottrina e giurisprudenza, trova genesi e
sviluppo nel contesto della dimensione multilivello
degli ordinamenti giuridici, ove oramai anche le
scelte in materia penale sembrano essere, il più delle
volte, “a rime obbligate”

AI, Rights and Innovation in USA and EU regulation: Freedom of Speech in the Digital Kingdom of Platforms
This Chapter focuses on the delicate balance between freedom of speech and online regulation in the context of digital platforms and consumer rights, comparing the different ap-proaches taken by the U.S. and the EU in regulating online intermediaries and content moder-ation. The Chapter provides a detailed view of the intersections between artificial intelligence and freedom of expression, highlighting the differences and shared challenges faced by both regions. In the U.S., freedom of expression is protected by the First Amendment to the Consti-tution, which guarantees platforms maximum freedom to moderate content, even at the cost of tolerating problematic content. This leads platforms to be more willing to allow the circulation of information, even if false or harmful. After years of taking a more liberal stance, the EU has intensified its regulatory measures to address the challenges of the digital age, focusing on the protection of human rights. In Europe, regulation is sometimes perceived as a form of censor-ship, as it limits freedom of expression for the sake of safety and security. On the other hand, in the U.S., there are concerns that excessive emphasis on protecting freedom of speech might favour the spread of disinformation and harmful content
