Marlene NourbeSe Philip’s (Un)Doing of Language: Omissions, Interpolations, Critical Fabulation
Starting with a reflection on the responsibility (or lack thereof) around the act of omitting, especially with reference to archival practices, this article focuses on the exploration of a series of experiments with language that the Canadian writer
Marlene NourbeSe Philip carries out in her poetic intervention in the archive of transatlantic slave trade and its unspoken and unspeakable stories. Omissions appear in fact not only across and through archival sources, but also as instrumental vehicles of meaning in Philip’s narrative/poetic process. This occurs in the way they work as addition rather than subtraction by providing a space for the articulation of embodied experience that the language alone is unable to convey. The article focuses more specifically on two texts: ‘Discourse on the Logic of Language’, from her 1989 collection of poems She Tries Her Tongue, Her Silence Softly Breaks, and the 2008 book Zong! In the exploration of both texts, the article’s main aim is to highlight the way Philip literally and figuratively breaks the language and is thereby able to create new meaning. This occurs through omissions (not only historical and archival, but also textual and often achieved through deliberate fragmentation), interpolations from other textual genres and languages in the original texts, as well as the process of critical fabulation. Her way of pushing the boundaries of textuality enables not only the exposure of the violence inherent in English as a language-system and in its colonial legacy but also gives space to the expression of ‘black noise’ and its surplus of embodied experience
Assessment of bimodal sea states by the wave buoy analogy method
The paper focuses on the development of a new algorithm, based on the wave buoy analogy, for bimodal sea state conditions. After a brief review about the worldwide persistence of bimodal sea states, the theoretical background is outlined. The ship accelerations, due to wind sea and swell components, are preliminarily estimated by iteratively applying a high and a low-pass filters to the ship motion time history. The prevailing directions of wind sea and swell are provided by weather forecast platforms, while the remaining sea state parameters are estimated by maximizing the correlation coefficient between measured and tentative filtered acceleration spectra in the encounter wave frequency domain. A wide ship motion synthetic dataset of a containership is simulated by solving the Cummins equations and randomly varying the sea state parameters, in order to investigate the statistics of errors on the prevailing wave direction, the significant wave height and the wave energy period of the equivalent sea state condition. The incidence of the time interval between two subsequent sea state measurements is also investigated. Based on current result, the new algorithm provides an accurate estimate of the main sea state parameters, which seems promising for future research activities
A General Framework for Closed Loop Negative Feedback Multivariable Physiological Control Systems: Existence, Uniqueness, and Stability of Homeostatic Equilibrium Points
The study of homeostatic equilibrium is a key concern in several fields, from physiology and biology to medicine and biomedical engineering. Control theory approaches can provide effective strategies to model physiological control systems, helping in understanding the dynamics of bio- and physio-logical regulation processes. However, the intrinsic complexity of living systems makes it difficult to identify unified biomodels that can represent a wide variety of physiological systems. In this context, the present work proposes a general framework to model the dynamics and describe the behavior of a wide class of multivariable physiological control systems, from the molecular to the whole-organ scale. The framework adopts a structure based on a closed-loop topology taking into account multiple inputs and outputs and with the negative feedback action intrinsically embedded within the model. The development of such a general model has at least three important repercussions: the first concerns the possibility of better understanding the basic mechanisms common to many physiological systems; the second is to develop a common theoretical framework to enable effective approaches to the analysis and design of synthetic biological control systems; finally, the investigation of the structural properties of the model in a general context, allows a guided and simplified application to specific cases. To this regard, in this paper, the existence, possible uniqueness and stability properties of the homeostatic equilibrium points of the general model are investigated; the theoretical framework is then illustrated through two real-world case-studies: (i) the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway nonlinear dynamics, a critical regulator of cellular growth, proliferation, and survival; (ii) the control mechanism of the neuromuscular stretch reflex, among the prime triggers implicated in postural control. Results proved the capability of the proposed framework to capture the intricate dynamics of multivariable physiological systems at different scales, highlighting the existence of asymptotically stable homeostatic equilibrium and allowing the study of the impact of transmission delays on the system's stability. At the best of authors' knowledge, following the paper Ponsiglione et al. (2023) where monovariable systems where dealt with, the proposed methodology is the first attempt to represent and investigate homeostasis from the molecular up to systemic level by exploiting a unified multivariable biomodeling architecture, which makes it a novel approach to understanding homeostatic control from a broader perspective
Does equity crowdfunding enhance the survival of sustainability ventures?
This study investigates the impact of equity crowdfunding on the survival rates of sustainability ventures. Utilizing data from UK-based companies that have successfully issued equity via crowdfunding platforms, the analysis differentiates the outcomes for environmentally sustainable ventures compared to others. The findings suggest that equity crowdfunding appears to confer long-term benefits on these companies, as evidenced by their lower failure rates. The advantage is more pronounced for companies operating outside the technology sector

Is gastronomy crucial for UNESCO sites’ tourists? An important exploratory Italian study
The paper analyses the role of gastronomic experiences as potential tourist attractions for local development. The decision to focus on a particular UNESCO site, as the Carolino aqueduct, is based on a perceived knowledge gap regarding the lack of tourists for the Carolino aqueduct. The work is based on quantitative data collection among potential visitors of the aqueduct Carolino. Altogether, 840 valid questionnaires were collected a Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was applied. Findings reveal that that people’s motivation, supplied food, prior knowledge and past experiences influence the gastronomic experiences. The gastronomic experiences in turn affect both satisfaction with the destination and destination loyalty. Thus, gastronomic experiences should be useful path to support the tourism in a UNESCO site, as the aqueduct Carolino. When discussing issues related to the cultural heritage, the question arises as to how should enhance the cultural heritage for tourism reasons. The results of this research demonstrate that gastronomic experiences are imperative to the success of cultural heritage tourism
Measurement of top-quark pair production in association with charm quarks in proton–proton collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector
Inclusive cross-sections for top-quark pair production in association with charm quarks are measured with proton–proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb−1, collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC between 2015 and 2018. The measurements are performed by requiring one or two charged leptons (electrons and muons), two b-tagged jets, and at least one additional jet in the final state. A custom flavor-tagging algorithm is employed for the simultaneous identification of b-jets and c-jets. In a fiducial phase space that replicates the acceptance of the ATLAS detector, the cross-sections for tt ̄+≥2c and tt ̄+1c production are measured to be 1.28−0.24+0.27pb and 6.4−0.9+1.0pb, respectively. The measurements are primarily limited by uncertainties in the modeling of inclusive tt ̄ and tt ̄+bb ̄ production, in the calibration of the flavor-tagging algorithm, and by data statistics. Cross-section predictions from various tt ̄ simulations are largely consistent with the measured cross-section values, though all underpredict the observed values by 0.5 to 2.0 standard deviations. In a phase-space volume without requirements on the tt ̄ decay products and the jet multiplicity, the cross-section ratios of tt ̄+≥2c and tt ̄+1c to total tt ̄+jets production are determined to be (1.23±0.25)% and (8.8±1.3)%
