PDE models for vegetation biomass and autotoxicity
Numerical techniques are widely used to simulate population dynamics in space. In vegetation
dynamics, these techniques are very useful to investigate how plants grow, compete for
resources, and react to environmental factors within the ecosystem. Plant–soil feedback (PSF)
refers to the process where plants or a community alter the biotic and abiotic characteristics of
soil that affects the growth of plants or community subsequently growing in that soil. During
the last three decades, PSF has been recognized as an important driver for the emergence of
vegetation patterns. The importance of studying such vegetation patterns is that they provide
an insight into potential ecological changes and illustrate the flexibility and resilience of an
ecosystem. Despite the fact that water depletion was once thought to be a major factor in
the development of vegetation patterns the existence of patterns in ecosystems without water
limitations serves as evidence that this is not the case. In this study, we examine how negative
plant–soil feedback contributes to the dynamics of plant biomass. We provide a comparison
of different reaction–diffusion PDE models explaining the dynamics of plant biomass in the
presence of autotoxicity produced by litter decomposition. We introduce different growth terms,
including logistic and exponential, along with additional factors such as extra mortality and
inhibitor terms, and develop six distinct models to investigate their individual and combined
effects on biomass toxicity distribution. By applying appropriate numerical techniques, we solve
the proposed reaction–diffusion PDE models in MATLAB to predict the impact of soil toxicity
on plant biomass
From Philanthropy to Business Ethics: Romeyne Robert Ranieri’s Role in the Economy of an Italian Region in the Early 20th Century
The origins of a social component within the dynamics of corporate organisations can be traced back to the Roman corpus of legislation in Renaissance humanistic society and later to the social reforms of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. From Adam Smith to modern theories and interpretations, such as Howard Bowen’s ‘corporate social responsibility’ concept, interest in business ethics has various aspects. The Italian context includes examples of large, well-known companies and those of small entrepreneurs. One of these is Romeyene Robert Ranieri, an American naturalised Italian who, for about thirty years, revolutionised part of the Umbrian socioeconomic context; this gave a strong impetus for local entrepreneurial and artisan development and for improving the cultural and social conditions of women and children. She developed an all-woman entrepreneurial activity with the Sorbello Embroidery School and was a promoter of the application of the Montessori pedagogical method in Italian primary schools
Determining the best strategies to improve agricultural water productivity in arid and semi-arid regions: An ordinal priority approach
The exponential growth of the world's population has significantly increased the demand for food. Agriculture, as the main provider of food, faces severe constraints due to limited water resources. In this context, improving agricultural water productivity is one of the most effective solutions to address water crises, ultimately leading to increases in both the quantity and quality of agricultural products. This study aimed to identify and prioritize the most effective strategies for improving agricultural water productivity in arid and semi-arid regions, with a particular focus on Mashhad County in Iran. Through interviews with experts and the use of the Ordinal Priority Approach (OPA), four criteria (operational effectiveness, social acceptance, economic efficiency, and ecological sustainability) and 27 strategies were identified and prioritized. The results revealed that institutional and policy interventions received the highest priority, followed by capacity-building and awareness interventions, and irrigation technology interventions. Agronomic and genetic interventions, as well as water resource management interventions, received the lowest priority. The findings and recommendations of this study provide valuable insights for policymakers, water managers, and agricultural stakeholders to develop and implement effective strategies to improve water productivity, enhance food security, and promote sustainable agricultural practices in arid and semi-arid regions
Applications of Interpolation theory to the regularity of some quasilinear PDEs
We present some regularity results on the gradient of the weak or entropic-renormalized solution u to the homogeneous Dirichlet problem for the quasilinear equations of the form –div (|∇u|p-2∇u) + V (x; u) = f, where Ω is a bounded smooth domain of Rn, V is a nonlinear potential and f belongs to non-standard spaces like Lorentz-Zygmund spaces. The results, which have been exposed by the third author in a talk presented in AGMA 2024, the International Scientific Online Conference «Algebraic and geometric methods of analysis», May 27-30, 2024, Ukraine, constitute only a part of results proved in detail in a paper coauthored with I. Ahmed, A. Fiorenza, A. Gogatishvili, A. El Hamidi and J.-M. Rakotoson ([2]). A Cyclical Penetration Testing Automation Methodology: The JetRacer Case Study
The integration of IT systems into daily life has become indispensable, with the Internet of Things (IoT) playing a crucial role in optimizing operations across different domains. Autonomous AI racecars, such as JetRacer, exemplify the innovative applications of IoT and AI technologies in automotive systems, driving advancements in these fields. However, the widespread adoption of IoT systems has heightened security concerns due to their limited resources and the inadequate security focus during their design. Penetration testing, a critical approach to identify and document security gaps, is often time-intensive, complex, and costly. To overcome these challenges, we propose an automated solution that simplifies penetration testing processes. Our approach utilizes a graph-based model to automatically generate penetration test plans. This paper incorporates automated execution of tests and dynamic updates to the model, based on test outcomes, ensuring a cyclic process. The methodology, fully implemented by a dedicated tool, has been applied in the context of autonomous racecars (i.e. JetRacer), with a step-by-step case study for cyclic penetration test

Le corps de la lettre et la lettre du corps dans Les Liaisons dangereuses. Écriture épistolaire et stratégies du pouvoir
Cette étude se penche sur le roman emblématique de Pierre Choderlos de Laclos, Les Liaisons dangereuses (1782), mettant en évidence le rôle central du corps féminin dans l’économie épistolaire du roman, au cœur des mécanismes de séduction et des logiques libertines qui en constituent l’armature narrative. Le corps, tour à tour lieu de domination, espace de vulnérabilité et vecteur de représentation sociale, s’impose comme un véritable langage, un système de signes qui trouve son prolongement naturel dans la lettre, elle-même instrument de manipulation et de dévoilement. Les protagonistes libertins, à travers leurs échanges et leurs stratégies, transforment la chair en texte, faisant du désir un outil de pouvoir et de la séduction une mécanique discursive. Les personnages de Merteuil, Valmont, Tourvel et Cécile incarnent chacun un régime distinct de corporéité : froideur calculée et maîtrise chez Merteuil, violence prédatrice chez Valmont, abandon sacrificiel chez Tourvel et naïveté manipulée chez Cécile. À travers eux, le roman interroge les multiples facettes de l’ « inclinaison », notion ambivalente oscillant entre expression spontanée du sentiment et instrument de contrainte ou d’assujettissement.
Ainsi, comme le démontre cet essai, Les Liaisons dangereuses se présente comme un véritable laboratoire littéraire et idéologique où s’entrelacent le discours libertin, les normes de genre en vigueur au XVIIIe siècle, et les imaginaires du corps, révélant les tensions entre liberté individuelle, codification sociale et pouvoir des mots
A closed form solution for the generalised failure envelope of a pile group
New criteria have been recently proposed to construct the failure envelopes of pile groups in the force space allowing to overcome the traditional design approach involving independent calculations of the vertical and lateral group capacities, which in reality are inherently coupled. The use of such envelopes offers undeniable advantages in the Ultimate Limit State design of pile foundations under seismic or wind load. However, current methodologies postulate a double-hinged failure mechanism for the single pile within the group, which can be unrealistic along with some load paths. Recent methodologies have addressed this problem but their use in routine design still requires numerical implementation. To overcome these issues, a new, closed form solution for interaction diagrams of piled foundations based on limit equilibrium is presented and discussed. The proposed domains fully address the interaction mechanisms between the vertical, horizontal and moment loads and are constructed through a few points, associated to specific distributions of loads upon piles at failure, whose coordinates can be easily determined by hand calculation. After demonstrating the prediction capability of the approach through a comparison with rigorous 3D finite element analyses, a straightforward design procedure is introduced to assess the safety of the foundation. Finally, an application of the proposed domain to a case study of a bridge pier is presented
