Circular economy in the food industry. An analysis of Italian listed companies’ sustainability reports
Purpose: The paper investigates the circular economy (CE) disclosure released by companies in response to the issuing of CE-related policies since the CE Action Plan 2015, using the in-stitutional view of legitimacy theory.
Design/methodology/approach – The study adopts a multiple case study methodology by content-analyzing the CE disclosure released by all listed Italian agri-food companies in their sustainability reports in the period 2016–2021.
Findings: The findings show that Italian agri-food companies released low levels of CE dis-closure. This result suggests a lack of strategic relevance attributed to the CE issue or the ab-sence of CE-related standards to rely upon. The results could also reveal companies’ scarce implementation of CE business models. The findings also show an increase in both the quanti-ty and quality of CE disclosure released in response to the issuing of a public CE-related poli-cy or framework, supporting the theoretical arguments of the institutional view of legitimacy theory.
Originality/value: In light of the worldwide increasing attention toward environmental issues and the CE paradigm, particularly in the food industry, this study is the first to investigate the CE disclosure released by agri-food companies in response to the issuing of CE-related poli-cies and voluntary frameworks.
Practical implications: The findings show that institutional pressure through the issuing of new CE-related policies and voluntary frameworks promotes increased CE disclosure by com-panies, suggesting that implementing both Directive 2022/2464/EU and the EFRAG standards would further encourage the release of CE disclosure
Towards a digital Europe: Modelling innovation in a spatially embedded context integrated space-time model to evaluate the innovation drivers in Italy
This study investigates the primary drivers of innovation processes in Europe within a broad framework that embraces the digitalisation dimension. Using data from the Regional Innovation Scoreboard (2017 and 2022), Spatial Autoregressive – Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR-SAR) models are performed to address spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity simultaneously. Assessing the sovereign-bank interdependence in Eurozone core countries
Purpose – The aim of this study is to determine whether financial contagion is transmitted through macroeconomic fundamentals, not only in weaker countries but also in strong Europen Monetary Union(EMU) economies.
Design/methodology/approach – This study conducts, for the first time, an analysis of the spillover effects resulting from a shock to Italian sovereign risk on the banking systems and credit default swaps (CDS) of five EMU core countries during the period 2012–2018, employing a global vector autoregressive (GVAR) approach.
Spatial interdependence is quantified through the cross-country distance in the deficit-to-gross domestic product (GDP) ratio.
Findings – The findings reveal the existence of both a “doom-loop” between banks and sovereign bonds and a “bad neighbours” effect. The susceptibility to spillovers is notably higher in economies displaying a larger deficit-to-GDP ratio. These results suggest that differences in fiscal fundamentals could drive financial contagion even within core countries, indicating a need for evaluating the stability of the entire EMU system.
Originality/value – Unlike previous studies, we utilize the cross-country distance in the deficit-to-GDP ratio as a measure of fiscal fundamentals distance for the countries under investigation. To the best of our knowledge, our study is the first to analyse this matter in EMU core countries using a GVAR methodolog
Vicenin-2 Hinders Pro-Inflammatory Response via Targeting the CaMKKβ-AMPK-SIRT1 Axis in Lipopolysaccharide-Stressed THP-1 Cells
Plant secondary metabolites are known to be valuable agents to hamper inflam-
mation owing to their multiple mechanisms of action. This study investigates the molecular
mechanisms underlying the anti-inflammatory effects of vicenin-2 in lipopolysaccharide
(LPS)-stressed THP-1 cells. After ascertaining the safety of vicenin-2 in our in vitro model,
we assessed the anti-inflammatory potential of this flavonoid. Indeed, it counteracted the
increase of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 levels, as well as
the overexpression of both inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase
(COX)-2 caused by the exposure of THP-1 cells to LPS. Acknowledged the role of SIRT1 in
the inflammatory process, we focused our attention on this enzyme. Our results showed
that LPS dramatically decreased the expression of SIRT1, whereas vicenin-2 restored the
levels of this enzyme to those of unexposed cells. These effects were also observed in
terms of acetylated p53, a SIRT1 substrate. Notably, we observed that vicenin-2 did not
act as a direct activator of SIRT1. Therefore, we investigated the potential involvement of
AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), an upstream activator of SIRT1. Of note, by block-
ing AMPK by dorsomorphin, the protective effects of vicenin-2 on SIRT1 expression and
activity were lost, suggesting the engagement of this kinase. Consequently, the blockage of
AMPK caused a downstream loss of the anti-inflammatory effect of vicenin-2, which was
no longer able to decrease both the activation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB and the production
of cytokines induced by LPS. Finally, docking simulation suggested that vicenin-2 might
act as an activator of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase β (CaMKKβ), one
of the regulators of AMPK. Overall, our results suggest that the anti-inflammatory effects
of vicenin-2 may be due to the interaction with the CaMKKβ-AMPK-SIRT1 axis
Intravascular Ultrasound Findings in Acute and Chronic Deep Vein Thrombosis of the Lower Extremities
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower extremities, as part of venous thromboembolism disorder, is the third leading cause of acute cardiovascular syndrome after heart attack and stroke. It can result in disability due to pulmonary embolism (PE) and post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS), particularly in cases where the thrombosis extends to the iliofemoral veins. Anticoagulation therapy is effective in preventing thrombus propagation and embolism but may not be sufficient for thrombus degradation and venous patency restoration. Up to 50% of patients with iliofemoral DVT develop PTS, mainly due to venous outflow obstruction or valvular incompetence. To date, the advent of new devices that enables rapid thrombus elimination and the restoration of deep venous patency, known as the “OPEN VEIN hypothesis”, may prevent valvular damage and reflux, cutting down the rate of PTS. Similarly, chronic venous disease could be related to a stenosis or occlusion of a major vein that can restrict blood flow. In this setting, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is an essential tool for correct diagnostic and therapeutic planning in acute and chronic vein disease. Only angiography in vein disease can limit the procedure’s efficacy, with a high rate of stenosis misdiagnosed; IVUS provides further imaging that complements traditional angiographic study, and its role is now established by different international guidelines. If compared to angiography, IVUS allows for the evaluation of major axial veins in a 360-degree ultrasound image of the lumen and of the vessel wall structure. At the same time, the precise location and size of the major lower extremity veins allow for the placement of the stent to be more straightforward with a precise dimension of the vein in all of its diameters; moreover, other abnormalities should be visualized as acute or chronic thrombus, fibrosis, or trabeculations. This review aims to provide an in-depth analysis of IVUS findings in acute and chronic lower extremity DVT, emphasizing its diagnostic and therapeutic implications
