How do up-skilling and skill heterogeneity affect a fair green transition?

    No full text
This paper analyses the labour-market and inequality implications of a carbon tax in a framework with skills heterogeneity and up-skilling opportunities. Our model extends the standard Two-Agent New Keynesian (TANK) setup by including green and brown firms, skilled and unskilled workers, and human-capital accumulation. We find that a gradual increase in the carbon price, designed to achieve full decarbonisation by 2050, produces heterogeneous effects across households: (i) skilled households reduce their labour supply in the short run across both sectors, opting instead to invest immediately in green up-skilling; (ii) unskilled households, driven by the income effect, increase hours worked in both sectors; and (iii) skilled households reap higher wages in the green sector, thereby exacerbating inequality. Neglecting the role of skills heterogeneity and up-skilling investment suggests that this policy has greater negative effects on labour income, consumption and output in both the short and the long run. Our findings underscore the importance of incorporating these labour-market features for a comprehensive assessment of the aggregate, sectoral and distributional effects of a carbon tax

Satellite-based regional Sea Surface Salinity maps for enhanced understanding of freshwater fluxes in the Southern Ocean

    No full text
This paper presents a newly developed Sea Surface Salinity (SSS) product for the Southern Ocean (SO), derived from SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) measurements by the Barcelona Expert Center (BEC). The primary challenges in retrieving SSS from L-band brightness temperature (TB) measurements in the Southern Ocean include degraded sensitivity in cold waters, radiometric signal contamination near sea ice edges and low variability in SSS across the region. To address these challenges, significant improvements were made to the retrieval algorithms. The BEC SO SSS product v1.0 delivers 9 d SSS maps on a 25 km EASE-SL grid, generated daily. The time series spans from 1 February 2011, to 31 March 2023, with spatial coverage below 30° S (10.20350/digitalCSIC/15493, ). The product shows high accuracy farther than 150 km from sea ice edges, with nearly zero bias and a standard deviation of 0.22 (compared to marine mammal data) and 0.25 (compared to TSG data from research vessels). Larger errors are observed within 150 km from the ice edges, due to residual sea-ice contamination and sampling-related errors in these dynamic areas. The product effectively captures seasonal and interannual variability, in line with the SOSE regional model. Although differences between satellite-derived and in situ salinity are more pronounced in these regions, the satellite product successfully reproduces the dynamics near ice edges. This product will significantly contribute to the understanding of processes influenced by upper-ocean salinity, including sea ice dynamics, particularly, the reduction of Antarctic sea ice extent and the opening of offshore polynyas

Managing knowledge and sustainability in resource constrained disaster environments

    No full text
Organizations use both tangible and intangible resources for their existence to achieve sustainable development goals. Organizational knowledge mainly comprises of tacit knowledge held by employees. It becomes more critical when the situations are unpredictable, for example in rescue/disaster projects involving human lives at risk. Tacit knowledge utilization has been understudied particularly in such environments bounded by resource constraint and sustainability issues. This qualitative research attempts to fill this gap by collecting data from the knowledge workers in a large public sector non-profit rescue organization. The study reveals various individual level, group level, organizational level, community level, and situational level factors, which impact the tacit knowledge utilization of rescue workers to properly execute emergency life threatening rescue operations and sustainability issues

Digitalization for Sustainable Working Environments: The Role of Job Crafting and Job Resources on Employees Engagement

    No full text
With the rapid expansion of digitalization, banks are transitioning from traditional financial intermediaries to proactive agents, increasing operational efficiency and playing a critical role in improving sustainability across multiple industries. As digital tools transform work environments, they also reshape employee engagement dynamics, influencing how employees interact with their roles. This study examines the relationship between digitalization and employee engagement through the lens of the job demands-resources (JD-R) model and job crafting. Survey data collected from remote workers suggest that digitalization improves job resources, resulting in increased engagement. The findings reconcile the contradictory results of prior research, indicating that the relationship between digitalization and engagement is mediated by job resources and job crafting. Moreover, job crafting, facilitated by the flexibility enabled by digitalization, significantly improves employee well-being. The study highlights how digitization enhances organizational sustainability by promoting employee well-being and tackling social issues

VERSO L’AUTONOMIA: ORIENTAMENTO E DISABILITÀ TRA SCELTE, DIRITTI E INCLUSIONE

    No full text

Growing up in rural or urban settings: differences in physical activity, sexual attitude, and orthorexia. A cross-sectional study

    No full text
Aim: This study aimed to investigate how the living context (rural and urban) and physical activities (PA) levels influence SAS and I-DOS in university students, considering gender-related differences. A secondary aim of our study was to explore the correlation between the variables of interest by considering gender differences. Subject and methods: In 562 university students (206 rural and 356 urban), PA levels using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (G-PAQ), attitudes to sexual expression using the Sexual Attitude Scale (SAS), and eating attitudes using the Orthorexia (I-DOS) questionnaire were assessed using a Google Form. Results: Rural males (RM) were more conservative than urban males (UM) (27.0 vs 22.5). RM compared to rural females (RF) had significantly higher BMI (23.7 vs 21.5), PA levels (2350 vs 1320) and SAS scores (27 vs 19; all p < 0.01), suggesting that rural females are more liberal than males. Urban males compared to urban females (UF) showed significantly higher BMI (23.0 vs 22.0) and PA levels (2400 vs 1440; both p < 0.01). Correlation analysis showed that I-DOS was significantly and positively correlated with BMI (Rho = 0.132, p < 0.01), G-PAQ (Rho = 0.131, p < 0.01), and SAS (Rho = 0.240, p < 0.01) in females, irrespective of living context. Conclusion: The living context (rural or urban) where males grew up may influence sexual attitudes. Irrespective of the living setting, males reported higher BMI and PA levels. These findings underscore the significant role of life contexts and sex differences in shaping health-related behaviors and attitudes, highlighting the need for further research to explore the underlying mechanisms and potential interventions
