Management control system in smart and sustainable firms. A theoretical analysis from an ecosystem perspective

    No full text
In today's competitive environment, smart technologies are increasingly recognized as key enablers of corporate sustainability. In this new context, corporate management control systems integrate with the issues of smart technologies, sustainability and inter- and intra-organizational collaboration as the driving elements of the firm of the future. This book proposes a management control framework for today's firms. It investigates the effectiveness of traditional management control systems in today’s competitive environment and identifies potential limitations that may hinder their ability to effectively monitor modern organizations. Furthermore, the book explores whether these systems can be improved with complementary tools or if entirely new mechanisms are required. The book argues the need to adopt a new approach to control and a different lens for evaluating the activity of guiding the achievement of corporate objectives, paving the way for the conceptualization of a new management control system

    No full text

A Sediment Supply Assessment in a Touristic Zone: A Case Study of West Cyprus

    No full text
Sediment transport plays a crucial role in shaping coastal and riverine environments, influencing both natural and human activities. This study assesses sediment supply from the entire basin of a touristic zone of Cyprus, where coastal erosion and sediment deposition impact infrastructure, tourism, and environmental sustainability. Human activities, such as dam construction, further disrupt the sediment balance. This study focuses on Coral Bay and Potima Gulf, a popular tourist destination along an ~11 km shoreline in western Cyprus, fed by four small rivers draining a total area of 66.5 km2. The sustainability of the Coral Bay–Potima system is threatened by the Mavrokolympos stream dam, which traps upstream sediments. Using the USLE method, mean sediment yield at the basin outlet is estimated at 888 t km−2 yr−1. These findings underscore the link between watershed processes and sustainable coastal management, emphasizing the need for integrated sediment transport assessments in touristic coastal zones

Solastalgia : A comparative corpus-based study of environmental lexicon

    No full text
This study focuses on the evolving environmentally related lexicon and the new meanings that have progressively arisen or born of the combination of pre-existing terms and lemmas. The increasingly widespread practice among news professionals, psychologists, sociologists etc. of listening, recording and collecting narratives centred upon environmental alterations has enhanced the tendency to coin new words. Neologisms, such as eco-grief, eco-anxiety, solastalgia, are progressively entering mainstream communication, though due to its more complex morphological makeup the term ‘solastalgia’ requires more in-depth analysis. The objective of the present study is to investigate the early use of the term solastalgia in scientific communication and trace its subsequent development and transition to mainstream communication. The progressive shift was investigated through an integrated methodological approach, based on a comparative corpus-based analysis (time span 2007–2023), and further informed by an ecolinguistics perspective. The data were obtained from two diachronic sub-corpora, specifically created for the purpose of this investigation: the Eco-PubMed corpus, extracted from the PubMed Central archive, and the Eco-Guardian corpus taken from the online international version of the Guardian newspaper. Both quantitative and qualitative aspects were taken into account, together with the cultural-pragmatic implications of this fast-emerging new locution. The results reveal that the term ‘solastalgia’ has only reached mainstream communication to a limited extent, since it occurs in 31 PubMed articles vs 17 Guardian articles. The diffusion of the term belied the authors’ expectations regarding the greater neutrality of scientific dissemination compared to mainstream communication. The study raises awareness of the dissemination of environment-related terminology and its interdisciplinary relationship to other domains

Complexity and Emergence in Market Ecosystems

    No full text
This book delves into the intricacies of transformative processes, focusing particularly on radical and disruptive changes that shape markets, social systems, organizations, cities, and service ecosystems. In a world characterized by turbulence, unpredictability, and complex challenges, managers and marketers are tasked with navigating change and driving progress. Drawing on frameworks, typologies, and insights from diverse theories—including complexity theory, emergence theory, and service-dominant logic—this book equips academics and practitioners with the tools to analyze, understand, and facilitate the transformation of their systems. Rooted in research and discussions from international academic events such as the Naples Forum on Service and the Forum of Markets and Marketing, this book offers invaluable guidance for those seeking to design sustainable transformations in today's dynamic landscape

Health, Well-being and Quality of Life Satisfaction: Gender Differences in Italian Regions

    No full text
Genderdifferences are an inherent part of humanexistence. However, beyond biological disparities, social structureshave historically established gender-based roles, distinct societalfunctions, and varying social status across genders. The gender gap affects everyone: our families, communities, workplaces, societies and this influenced women health, well-being and quality of life. The EU has made significant progress in terms of gender equality in recent decades. A European-level tool that monitors disparitiesbetween men and women in different member countries is the Gender Equality Index, developed by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) in 2013. Starting from the analysis proposed by EIGE, the aim of this work is to represent gender differences in Italian regions in 3 domains: Health, Well-being and Quality of life. Using a multisource approach, simple indicators, both objective and subjective, were chosen for each domain. A total of 14 indicators were calculated, starting from Multipurpose survey on households “Aspects of daily life”, Life tables and Multipurpose Survey: time use(allby Istat). The analyses were carried out with a model based on the use of multivariate analysis techniques and the construction of synthetic indices, one for each domain, capable of providing an overall view, which cannot be obtained by considering individual elements separately. The results show for Quality life satisfaction and Health a gap in favour of men, except for some territorial differences; instead, women reveal a better lifestyle, so the results of Well-being domain are to the advantage of them

Lightning jump as precursor of very large hail occurrence: first evidence in the Italian territory

    No full text
Hailstorms are one of the most dangerous atmospheric phenomena for people and can cause significant damage to agriculture, buildings and cars. Therefore, the investigation of the entire hailstorms’ life cycle is crucial to understand in which conditions these phenomena are generated. Many studies demonstrated that an increase in lightning activity is generally associated with severe atmospheric conditions (large hail, tornadoes, flash floods, strong wind gusts etc.). Starting from the total number of lightning strikes, which is the most common variable related to lightning activity, in this work we describe some additional features emerging between very large hail occurrence and flashes in the Italian territory, by analyzing the lightning jump indicator. To meet the goals of this study, a small dataset including hail reports and lightning data from LAMPINET network for 10 hailstorms occurred in the Italian Peninsula between 2015 and 2022 has been analyzed. The main results show that the total lightning intensification and reduction may occur in different stages that characterize the evolution of the hailstorms, showing different types of behaviour from the initial stage to the dissipative one. In the first evolutionary steps, an abrupt increase in the number of strokes (i.e. the lightning jump) is usually observed, leading to a lightning rate that, in some hailstorms, may grow with a linear or exponential trend. The new mathematical approach proposed allows us to analyze the hailstorms using different temporal series (at 20, 30 and 40-minute intervals) leading to a comparison between hail reports and lightning jump values every 10 min. As a general result, the strongest lightning jump value doesn’t show a clear relationship with the maximum hail diameter detected. In 5/10 case studies analyzed, the highest lightning jump value anticipates the occurrence of hail on the ground by 10 to 60 min, while it is coincident with the first hail reports (using a tolerance of ± 10 min) in 2/10 hail events. In the remaining 3 case studies, it is observed at least 10 min after the first hailstones have reached the ground. Such preliminary results encourage to experiment a proper combination of total lightning and lightning jump to improve retrieval algorithms currently working to identify and track the hailstorms
