European ports as energy hubs: a sustainability index to assess territorial development

    No full text
The capacity of ports to act as energy hubs is increasingly relevant in light of sustainability challenges and global crises like the Ukraine conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic, and energy scarcity. Numerous international and national initiatives are shaping the future of port development to address environmental and economic concerns. This study investigates thirty-seven European countries to assess the efficacy of the ongoing investment in fostering local growth, focusing on transforming ports into sustainable ‘green’ facilities. Particular attention is given to hydrogen as an innovative energy vector, and to the role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The empirical research employs Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to develop a multidimensional sustainability index that integrates policy regulation, production, financial, and environmental indicators, also involving mediator and moderator analysis. The findings provide an analytical tool to support targeted policymaking and structural reforms in the port sector, enhancing the strategic governance of sustainability transitions

Polystyrene micro and nanoplastics: A comparative study of the cytotoxic effects exerted on Mytilus galloprovincialis gills

Polystyrene microplastics (MP) and nanoplastics (NP) are significant contributors to the pollution of aquatic ecosystems. Their high persistence, small size, and high potential to enter food chains pose risks to humans and all living organisms. Mytilus galloprovincialis is a mussel native to the Mediterranean Sea, widely distributed in coastal environments. As a filter-feeder, it accumulates pollutants, making it a valuable bioindicator and model organism in environmental monitoring and research. In this work, we used adult mussels to evaluate the cytotoxic effects of polystyrene MP (5 μm) and NP (0.1 μm) on gill lamellae cyto-anatomy. The animals were exposed for 1, 3, and 11 days. Results showed increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative damage to lipids, and in vitro susceptibility to oxidants on day 3, as well as increased total antioxidant capacity on days 3 and 11. Parallel histological investigation demonstrated epithelial alterations from day 1, characterised by increased PCNA expression, particularly in the most exposed frontal epithelium. Marked alterations were also observed in the connective septa, where collagen deposition and disorganisation were detected. The activation of an immune response was evident by the increased presence of haemocytes and mucus cells. In all cases, the effects were more marked after exposure to NP. These results suggest a significant impairment of gill function, particularly in food collection, as the frontal and front lateral cilia were markedly affected. In conclusion, plastic reduction in the oceans is an issue that can no longer be postponed; the first step seems to be a more conscious use of this material

Immaginarsi insegnante. Il disvelamento del sapere implicito come formazione riflessiva degli educatori

    No full text

Nearshore topography retrieval based on wave spectrum inverted from Gaofen-3 image

    No full text
This paper aims to propose a nearshore water depth retrieval method using Chinese Gaofen-3 (GF-3) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. By applying a deep learning-based multi-layer perceptron (MLP) approach, one-dimensional wave spectra are inverted from 12 quad-polarized GF-3 images. Then, SAR-derived wave spectrum is divided into wind-wave and swell based on the ocean wave overshoot phenomenon. Based on the wave dispersion relation over gentle slopes, water depth is iteratively derived using both wind-wave and swell spectra. The proposed method is validated in the Yangtze River estuary. Compared with General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) and Earth Topography 2022 (ETOPO2022) water depth, it is found that accuracy of water depth using swell spectrum is higher than that using wind-sea spectrum, indicating that the error is within ± 2 m. Furthermore, the error analysis presents that swell-based depth estimates exhibit smaller discrepancies compared to wind-sea results, particularly with significant wave heights (SWH) below 2 m and peak wavelengths exceeding 100 m. These findings demonstrate the impact of wave characteristics on inversion accuracy, revealing that swell spectra provide higher reliability under specific hydrodynamic conditions. Additionally, the results underscore the capability of GF-3 SAR for coastal underwater observation

Machine Learning-Based Algorithm for Gaofen-3 Wind Vector Retrieval With Assimilation by COAWST in China Seas

    No full text
This study develops a novel machine learning-based algorithm for retrieving wind vectors from Gaofen-3 (GF-3) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. In addition, we explore the assimilation of SAR-derived wind fields with the Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport model. Our dataset comprises 3000 GF-3 quad-polarized stripmap images collected over the China Seas during the past 8 years, collocated with European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts data. The proposed methodology utilizes SAR intensity spectra and polarimetric correlation coefficients between dual-polarization channels (horizontal-horizontal/horizonal-vertical) for wind direction retrieval using eXtreme Gradient Boosting. For wind speed retrieval, the XGBoost model incorporates co-polarized normalized radar cross section, retrieved wind direction, incidence angle, and azimuth angle as input features. Validation of the wind vector against the measurements from Haiyang-2 (HY-2) measurements confirms the robustness of XGBoost-based algorithms, i.e., a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 22.99° for wind direction with a correlation of 0.97 and a scatter index (SI) of 0.20°, and an RMSE of 1.26 m/s for wind speed with a COR of 0.89 and a SI of 2.26 m/s. The XGBoost-retrieved SAR wind vectors derived from 180 fine stripmap images were applied to assimilate COAWST ocean models. Assimilation using wind components (u, v) outperformed using wind speed/direction (U, φ) and nonassimilation, validated against HY-2 measurements. The (u, v)-based method achieved superior accuracy for wind speed (RMSE 1.69 m/s) and significant wave height (SWH) (RMSE 0.41 m), which showed improvements in wind speed and SWH of 0.15 m/s and 0.1 m, respectively, compared to the (U, φ)-based assimilation, demonstrating SAR's effectiveness in refining ocean simulations

Prefazione al vol di A. Cuccaro, LIVING IN THE SOCIAL AGE. LA SFIDA DELLA SCUOLA E DELLA FORMAZIONE NELL’ERA DIGITALE

    No full text
