Evaluating the physiological conditions and biomechanics of wheelchair basketball players: A comprehensive study
Art as a target for climate activism: Does it raise public attention?
In 2022, a series of environmental protests targeted Western art masterpieces to provoke public awareness of climate change. While these attacks received considerable media attention, one question remains unanswered: did they affect public attention regarding climate-related issues? Using weekly Google Trends data across Western countries and applying both interrupted time series and difference-in-differences estimators, we assess whether these acts shifted public attention. Exploiting the presence of climate action among the Sustainable Development Goals, and constructing a counterfactual using public interest in other goals, we find that, across multiple specifications and robustness checks, climate action became relatively more salient following the attacks. Our results suggest that the strategy of targeting symbolic cultural goods was associated with a measurable increase in public attention regarding environmental issues
Sustainable Shipping Business Models Through Circular And Accountability Harmony: A Research Agenda
The shipping industry, a key component of global trade, plays a significant role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the United Nations 2030 Agenda. Meanwhile, it also contributes approximately 940 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) annually, for which it is undergoing a process of decarbonizing its supply chain to reduce Scope 3 emissions. This involves not only reducing emissions but also measuring and reporting them, striving to balance environmental concerns with profitability. However, Scope 3 emissions fall outside the direct control of shipping companies, as they are tied to the resources and raw materials consumed (e.g., paper, waste) and the emissions of suppliers. Reporting and reducing these emissions are particularly important for shipping companies adhering to frameworks like the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), or the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD). Shipping activities related to fuel production, energy consumption, and waste generation, categorized as upstream Scope 3 emissions under the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, are influenced by the shipping industry’s business model. This model, when driven by circular economy principles and business accountability, can help mitigate climate change and contribute to the achievement of SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG13 (Climate Action). Despite growing scholarly interest, these issues remain fragmented, particularly regarding the integration of circular economy models in the shipping industry’s business practices and accountability mechanisms. This study aims to address these gaps by analyzing existing literature and proposing a research agenda to advance knowledge in this area
Designing Impact Case Studies: Lessons from the SIDREA-CNDCEC joint project on “high-growth start-ups (Gazelles)
Growing attention has been given to the potential and actual “impact” of academic activities and outputs on businesses, communities, and societies. From the perspective of the UK-Research Excellence Framework (REF) and the Italian VQR released by ANVUR, the National Agency for the Evaluation of the University and Research Systems, designing and undertaking an effective “impact case study” requires a constant and constructive engagement between academics and non-academic actors, such as practitioners and policymakers. However, there is no relevant academic literature or an overall accepted theoretical/normative framework for designing, conducting, and assessing impact cases. To fill this gap, this chapter, which adopts an illustrative case study methodology, presents the example of the impact case study on “Principles, Models, and Financial Accounting Practices for the Startups and the High-Growth Startups (i.e., Gazelles),” promoted by the Gruppo di Studio “Start-ups” of the Italian academic group of the professors of accounting and business economics (SIDREA) and the Italian institute of chartered accountants (CNDCEC). This impact case study is mobilized as an illustrative example of the context, processes, and interactions that occurred in jointly designing a project whose aims is to identify principles, guidelines, and practices for planning, managing, controlling, and evaluating startups and gazelles. We describe the processes and interactions we undertook to design and construct this case study to offer methodological insights into “how” and “why” to undertake an impact case study. From this descriptive-illustrative analysis, we intend to learn some lessons that we draw upon for designing impactful case studies in the future

Sustainability for ship operations in seaport areas: Technical solutions and environmental assessment
: The International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) has prohibited ships using of HFO in ports. For this reason, during in port operations, different strategies must be adopted, based on the use of cleaner fuels or on the transition towards marine electrical technologies. In this context, the purpose of the present research is to analyze and compare, from an environmental and economic points of view, different technical solutions for in port operations. Four alternative configurations have been proposed: Solution 1, Battery & Internal Combustion Engine (ICE); Solution 2, Battery & Fuel Cell (FC) with yellow hydrogen; Solution 3, Battery & Fuel Cell (FC) with green hydrogen, and Solution 4, Battery & Cold Ironing (CI). From the environmental perspective, the Well-to-Waves (WTW) analysis has been carried out; from the economic point of view, the investment costs and the operating costs have been calculated and compared. Moreover, an economic performance indicator, the Economic-Environmental Correlation specific Index (ECI), has been introduced and evaluated. Results highlighted that from environmental point of view, the best solution is achieved implementing the Battery & Fuel Cell (FC) solution. On the other hand, the Battery & Cold Ironing (CI) solution represents the best solution from the economic point of view, allowing to obtain the lowest ECI
Il recesso
Il saggio analizza la disciplina del recesso nel contesto delle piattaforme digitali, distinguendo tra il recesso dal rapporto di partecipazione alla piattaforma e il recesso dai singoli contratti conclusi tramite essa. La trattazione prende avvio dal quadro normativo europeo, in particolare dal Regolamento Europeo UE 2019/1150 noto come Platform to Business ed dal Regolamento Europeo UE 2022/2065, noto come Digital Service Act, evidenziando come il legislatore europeo tenda a privilegiare strumenti alternativi al recesso, come la sospensione o limitazione del servizio, lasciando alla cessazione definitiva un ruolo residuale.
L’autore indaga le tre principali fonti del recesso: legale generale, legale specifica e negoziale, evidenziando come l’esercizio del recesso si differenzi in base alla natura della piattaforma (di piccole o grandi dimensioni), alla qualifica del soggetto (fornitore, operatore commerciale o consumatore), e alla struttura del rapporto giuridico (continuativo, occasionale, o contrattualmente tipizzato).
Viene quindi ricostruita, anche in via analogica, una disciplina coerente del recesso, alla luce dei principi di equità, trasparenza e proporzionalità. Il saggio mette in luce la tensione tra libertà economica e tutela dell’affidamento degli utenti, sottolineando l’importanza di procedure di preavviso, motivazione e conservazione dei dati anche dopo il recesso, in particolare per le piattaforme di rilevanza sistemica. Infine, si propone una lettura evolutiva del recesso come strumento ordinario di autodeterminazione contrattuale anche nei rapporti digitali, in risposta alla crescente standardizzazione e automatizzazione delle relazioni giuridiche online
New Approaches to Measuring AI Contribution to Innovation Across European Regions
This paper extends the Regional Knowledge Production Function framework by introducing an artificial intelligence dimension into the analysis of regional innovation across Europe. AI dimension is captured through firm-level adoption and a novel Regional AI Exposure (AIRE) indicator. To address spatial dependence and heterogeneity, a Mixed Geographically Weighted Regression-Spatial Autoregressive (MGWR-SAR) model is used. Results show significant spatial heterogeneity in the AI-innovation nexus. Firm-level AI adoption is strongly linked to higher innovation, especially in Northern and Western Europe. AIRE plays a dual role, reinforcing innovation in technologically advanced regions while acting as a catalyst for catch-up in less developed areas, especially in Eastern Europe
Physical activity for the promotion of cognitive functions: The role of the exercise-induced Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor in muscle-brain crosstalk
During physical activity, the contracting skeletal muscle acts as an endocrine organ for its ability to secrete molecules called myokines, mostly cytokines and growth factors, which modulate metabolic and cellular functions in different organs and tissues. Some of the most relevant for the brain include Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor, Insulin-like growth factor-1, Interleukin-6, Irisin, cathepsin B, and vascular endothelial growth factor, which are involved in muscle-brain crosstalk. Brain- Derived Neurotrophic Factor improves cognitive functions by neurogenesis, and the increase of plasticity in the hippocampus region. This review aims to provide recent insights on the role played by physical activity and diet in ameliorating cognitive functions, focusing on the effects involving Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor
