Strong political will, accompanied by bold investments in the SDGs, is essential to reversing setbacks. The UN Secretary-General’s SDG Stimulus outlines the need for the international community to come together to mobilize investments for the SDGs, calling on wealthier countries to scale up affordable long-term financing to help countries in need to the tune of $500 billion annually

On November 8, 2023, the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) convened a three day meeting in Mombasa, Kenya, from October 24 to 27, 2023, to formulate a Sustainable Tourism Master Plan for the IGAD region. The meeting aimed to establish a regional framework for sustainable tourism that promotes socio economic development, poverty alleviation, and regional integration among IGAD member states, which include Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, and Uganda. Ms. Mama Keita, Director of ECA in Eastern Africa, highlighted the tourism sector's significant contribution to the region's GDP, averaging 8.7%, and its potential for job creation and income generation
