The African continental free trade area (AfCFTA) and trade in services: opportunities and strategies for Southern Africa
No full textThe services sector is the most dynamic and promising sector of nearly any economy. Services dominate the Southern African region, largely due to the influence of South Africa, whose services sector accounted for 67 per cent of Southern Africa’s combined services economy. However, sectoral characteristics highlight the need for greater structural transformation, more value addition and job-creating growth. The AfCFTA offers an opportunity to transform the existing commodity-dependent and fragmented socioeconomic spectrum of African countries into a more unified market marked by higher levels of economic diversification and product sophistication. The AfCFTA is meant to allow the formation of larger economies of scale and enhance the region’s specialization in agricultural, industrial goods and services

Enhancing capacities in logistics and transportation for inland water ways and lakes in Eastern Africa: comparative analysis report
No full textThe lakes and waterways of East Africa that provide the greatest expanse of inland water in the tropics represent untapped potential for transport and logistics. Countries in East Africa have recognized this potential and have been reviving the Inland Waterway Transport (IWT) sector to meet the rising demand for transport and logistics and support the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Through best practices from international experience and transport development trends, East Africa has embraced an integrated multi-modal corridor approach and leapfrogged IWT development. The subregion has two main multi-modal corridors – the Northern Corridor and the Central Corridor. Based on the insights drawn from the comparative analysis of best practices and lessons learned from African and international case studies, recommendations for enhancing the operational capabilities for logistics and transportation for inland waterways and lakes in Eastern Africa are provided in categories. Although Eastern Africa, according to classification by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), covers 14 countries, the focus of this paper are those countries listed with major lakes and waterways. They include Burundi, DRC, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. The lakes and waterways of Eastern Africa represent untapped potential for logistics and transportation. They are also home to some of the largest and most ecologically diverse freshwater systems in the world, supporting millions of people with drinking water, food and livelihoods. Thus, the protection, conservation and sustainable management of blue assets, and development for logistics and transportation must go hand in hand

No full textLe présent communiqué de presse s’agit de la 55 session de la Commission économique pour l’Afrique à Addis-Abeba, en Éthiopie, l’équipe de communication de la CEA a interviewé le Directeur de la Division de l’intégration régionale et du commerce, Stephen Karingi, sur les progrès de la Zone de libre-échange continentale africaine (ZLECAf). Le Rwanda exporte le café à valeur ajoutée vers le Ghana. Ledit café est commercialisé par une entreprise qui apporte son soutien aux femmes qui produisent du café. Le Kenya exporte des batteries vers d’autres pays africains dans le cadre de la ZLECAf. Le thé commercialisé du Kenya vers d’autres pays africains provient de petits exploitants agricoles ; ces échanges confirment que la Zone améliore les moyens de subsistance
