No full textRegional preparatory workshop for African voluntary national reviews and voluntary local reviews: strengthening integration and reporting on the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063. The 2023 workshop is taking place at a pivotal stage of the continent’s implementation of the two agendas. The year 2023 marks the end of the first 10-year implementation plan of Agenda 2063 and the halfway point for the 2030 Agenda. The workshop also comes after the twenty-seventh session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which was hosted in Africa and focused on a number of climate-finance issues that are critical to the continent. The workshop will conclude with a joint session, co-hosted by the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning and the United Nations Foundation, that will facilitate dialogue and experience-sharing among former and current voluntary national review countries and with relevant stakeholders from the region
Impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine crisis on micro small and medium -sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Lesotho
No full textThe coronavirus disease (COVID-19), as well as the subsequent Russia-Ukraine crisis, unleashed adverse impact on African countries economies, businesses and societies. These two events combined to constrain the ability of enterprises to produce goods and services and engage in trade. The micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) were the most affected, by these two developments. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine crisis on MSMEs in Lesotho was the focus of this research study. In 2020, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), and its development partners, conducted an online survey on the impact of COVID-19 on African businesses. The findings confirmed that most businesses were severely affected by COVID-19 pandemic leading to closures and reductions in capacity utilisation. The findings further confirmed the expression of dissatisfaction by a majority of companies regarding inadequate and insufficient relief interventions provided by respective governments. Lesotho was not an exception in experiencing a negative impact. Like other countries, Lesotho provided relief to the MSMEs in the form of COVID-19 Relief Fund. This relief fund, as in many countries was considered insufficient by the affected enterprises. Lesotho further provided assistance through the introduction of subsidies on agricultural inputs and energy related products in order to curb inflationary pressures brought about by these events

The Chair Expert Committee highlighted that the tightening of monetary policy in developed economies has lowered global demand and increased borrowing costs, thereby reducing investment in African countries, simultaneously as public debt continues to rise, reaching alarming levels in some nations, undermining attempts to improve debt sustainability and protect the poor. Through analytical work, technical assistance, and advisory services, the ECA assisted African nations in bolstering their capacity to mobilize public resources and enhancing their economic governance architecture. The ECA worked with African countries throughout the year to combat Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs), implement Integrated National Financing Frameworks (INFFs), and ensure greater transparency in public financial management, in addition to regular publications and advocacy work

No full textSDRs are an international reserve asset issued by IMF and allocated to its member countries to help to supplement their official reserves. IMF unconditionally allocates SDRs to all or some of its membership when it determines that there is a need to boost global liquidity. Since its creation in 1969, the SDR has been the unit of account of IMF and several other multilateral organizations, such as the African Development Bank. Under its Articles of Agreement, IMF is entitled to proceed with allocations of SDRs when it determines that there is a long-term global need to supplement the official reserves of countries. An allocation of SDRs does not add to the public debt burden of any country
