Digital trade regulatory integration: country profile Egypt
No full textThis country profile presents the key findings for Egypt. In February 2016, the Egypt tian government launched the Sustainable Development Strategy, widely known as “Egypt 2030.” A key initiative of the strategy is to “transform Egypt into a Global digital hub,” and one of its main pillars is to “promote e-commerce through the provision of an enabling and legislative environment.” In 2017, the government launched the National e-Commerce Strategy for Egypt, in cooperation with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.3 Since the adoption of these strategies, Egypt has been actively developing and adopting e-commerce-related legislation, including Law No. 75 of 2018 Regulating Anti-Cyber and Information Technology Crimes4 and Law No. 151 of 2020 on Personal Data Protection. Impact of COVID-19 and the Russia-Ukraine crisis on micro small and medium-size enterprises(MSMEs)in Mozambique
No full textA total sample of 310 MSMEs was surveyed, across different sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, retail, and services. The surveyed MSMEs comprised of both formal and informal businesses, focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises. From the sample collected, 80% of businesses were formal and 20% informal. The survey also collected data from a geographical distribution which included all provinces in Mozambique, with the most significant representation of about 60% being from Maputo Province (186 enterprises), 23% from Maputo city (72 enterprises) and the remainder of the provinces represented 17% of the survey. MSMEs in Mozambique felt and, to some extent, continue to feel the harsh economic impact of COVID-19. The pandemic compelled most companies to lay off their staff, with part-time workers laid off at a faster pace than full-time staff. While the tourism sector was the first to incur losses, with the temporary closure of beaches and resorts, the survey shows that the agriculture sector suffered more than the services and industry sectors. The main challenges faced by businesses were low demand of goods and services, increase in the price of inputs and issues with access to finance. As a result, companies decreased employees, reduced production levels, or closed the business. MSMEs believe that the financial outlook for their businesses might remain mostly the same from the current state or slightly improve, but the hopes of operating at levels pre-COVID-19 are low. Enhancing government support and subsidies, improving access to financing, empowering local production, and investing in digital infrastructure are recommendations in this study to aid the recovery and growth of MSMEs
