On the environmental sustainability effects of sovereign debt : evaluating the environmental impacts of resource-backed loans in African Countries

    No full text
This study employs the entropy balancing method to investigate the causal impact of resource-backed loans on the environmental sustainability of African countries. Robustness tests reveal that resource-backed loans exert a negative and statistically significant effect on the environmental sustainability index. Disaggregating the loans, the analysis shows that oil- and mineral-backed loans significantly reduce environmental sustainability, while cocoa- and tobacco-backed loans have no statistically significant impact. The findings underscore the need for resource-backed lending agreements, particularly those involving oil and minerals, to incorporate stringent provisions financing biodiversity conservation and mitigating adverse environmental impacts. These measures are crucial for promoting sustainable development in borrowing countries

This study investigates the impact of economic integration agreements on export duration in Africa, using disaggregated sectoral data from 1996 to 2020. Findings reveal that African trade relationships are short-lived, with only 45% surviving into the second year, showing regional and country-level disparities. A discrete-time proportional hazard model identifies initial trade value, foreign investments, and experience as key determinants of trade duration. Agreements like AGOA and ACP-EU exhibit mixed effects on export survival, while intra-African economic agreements influence survival rates variably. The study recommends better integration of SMEs and enhanced intra-African investment frameworks under the AfCFTA to strengthen trade linkages

This article examines the impact of non-farm enterprise creation on poverty reduction in WAEMU countries, focusing on gender disparities. Using an endogenous switching regression model and Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition on 2018-2019 EHCVM micro-data (45,194 rural households), findings show men’s average consumption expenditure is 15.3% higher than women’s. Poverty reduction probabilities are 79% for men and 73.53% for women, with a 5.47% gender gap favoring men. Married women have 5.79% higher consumption expenditure than unmarried women, indicating married individuals create more profitable enterprises. Key factors include education, land ownership, financial access, and extension services
