Inter-agency Policy Briefs on Accelerating Progress on the 2030 Agenda from Local to Global Levels: The critical importance of SDG localization
The Inter-Agency Policy Brief on Accelerating SDG Localization to deliver on the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is now available. This policy brief seeks to highlight the importance of integrating a multilevel governance approach within decision-making and policymaking processes and mechanisms. It does this in order to support the localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and is aimed at civil society and all levels of government. This brief also provides information on the context of multilevel governance, as well as on the challenges facing it. It then makes recommendations for fostering this important approach. In doing so, this brief seeks to assist policymakers and urban development practitioners in developing vertical and horizontal institutional integration and policy coherence
Youth unemployment in Africa: challenges and opportunities
The present policy brief explores the issues of youth unemployment and underemployment in Africa, identifying major challenges faced by young people and proposing strategic interventions for policymakers. In its review of the complexities of youth unemployment and underemployment, the brief explores the challenges faced by youth in Africa. The impacts of underemployment and unemployment loom large, with a significant portion of the continent’s young people facing precarious economic prospects. The relevant data reveal stark regional disparities, with youth unemployment rates exceeding 20 per cent in Southern and North Africa. This scenario is exacerbated by the prevalence of informal sector employment in West, Central and East Africa, driven in part by the absence of robust social safety nets
The Addis Ababa Action Agenda in Southern Africa: Reporting Progress on Finance, Trade and Development Cooperation
Report on the Implementation of Regional and International Agendas and other Special Initiatives in Southern Africa” had documented the slow progress in achieving the SDGs in Southern Africa and advocated for regional approaches towards fast tracking sustainable development. This year’s Report puts a spotlight on the progress made in the region on commitments that were made by member states in relation to the Addis Ababa Action Agenda (AAAA) of the Third International Conference on Financing for Development that was adopted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in July 2015. These commitments were meant to advance the pursuit of sustainable development. This report is timely and relevant for several reasons. First, ahead of the Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development (FfD4), that will take place in Sevilla, Spain from June 30 to July 3, 2025, where a successor to the AAAA will be developed, it is critical for Southern Africa to take stock of what has been accomplished from 2015 to 2023 on the main focus areas of the AAAA, identify gaps that remain to be addressed and delineate priorities to be raised at FfD4
Africa trade insight
The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) aims to create a unified market for over 1.4 billion people, with a combined GDP of around USD 3 trillion. The 2018 Agreement promotes the free movement of goods, services, and capital, enhancing manufacturing investment, regional value chains, and economic resilience. Effective national implementation is key, with the agreement ratified by most African Union member states. The African Union Assembly and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) have supported the development of national AfCFTA strategies since 2019, aiding 36 countries so far. In January 2024, the ECA, AfCFTA Secretariat, and UNDP held a conference in Nairobi to foster collaboration and share best practices in AfCFTA implementation. This event marks the start of a regular platform for building a learning community dedicated to Africa’s economic transformation
