Uppnår vi delaktighetsmålen? : Integrationsinsatser i Växjö 2019-2024
This study provides a brief analysis of the participation and inclusion within theintegration efforts in Växjö Municipality, between the years 2019-2024. Thetimeline was selected due the creation and implementation of the so called SÖK, astrategic document detailing how the municipality and neighboring municipalities inKronoberg County should address mutual challenges within integration work. Theaim is to follow up on the specific goals set in the strategic document, specificallythose related to inclusion and participation. The study is guided by three keyquestions: identifying challenges and successes, assessing the fulfillment of thestrategic goals, and finally proposing improvements for future strategies andactivities. The study employs primarily a qualitative method, specifically interviewswith the target group and key contributors to the integration effort. The results ofthe study highlight language skills, social inclusion, cross-cultural and cross-sectorcollaboration as key components to achieve a high level of inclusion andparticipation. The study emphasizes the importance of the long-term perspective, evaluation and stakeholder engagement to succeed. The conclusion is that furtherdevelopment and research is possible even though Växjö Municipality hassuccessfully made significant progress in the area
Educators' and Parents' Perspectives About Belonging in Early Years Education in Europe
The overall goal of this project is to gain a broad picture of belonging and the politics of belonging in early education settings (In Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Iceland the children attend school from 6 or 7 years. In the Netherlands children attend compulsory school at 4 years of age. Using the terms early education settings and (pre)schools with parenthesis we refer to educational institutions (preschool, day-care, compulsory school) involving children between 4 and 6 years) in five European countries: Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden. By 'belonging' we refer to children<acute accent>s sense of feeling safe and 'at home'. By 'politics of belonging' we refer to societal structures and processes of safeguarding communities and their borders among children (and educators) in their early education settings. Educators (n = 648) and parents (n = 1,598) were surveyed about their perspectives about, and pedagogies for, belonging. Results indicated that, in general, parents and educators felt positively about belonging in their (pre)schools. Even so the study shows that experiences of belonging cannot be taken for granted, and a number of parents and educators worry about children being excluded and alienated. The study also revealed a relation between the educational level of educators and the complexity of pedagogic methods educators used to support children<acute accent>s belonging in early education settings. Nordforsk:Politics of belonging: Promoting children’s inclusion in educational settings across borders
Children as Linguistic Rights Holders in the Swedish Welfare System
This paper investigates an encounter in a multilingual welfare setting where a child withmigration experiences is the rights holder. The empirical basis is a story told by theinterpreter Nour, about an encounter at a youth clinic. The analysis is guided by theconcept of linguistic (in)justice. Findings show that linguistic injustices are a result ofthe reproduction of monolingual mindsets and linguistic paternalism in the intersection oflayers of power asymmetries when welfare professionals do not let the child client talk, when adults talk on the child’s behalf, and the speakers give priority to the majoritylanguage on behalf of the language that the child speak. These findings suggest thatprofessionals and policymakers must recognise the special conditions of a multilingualsetting and children as a particular group of language rights holders.Linguistic (in)justice, global migration an Nordic welfare state
Beyond a million years : Robust radiation shielding for high-level waste
A recent paper focused on gamma dose rates from unshielded high-level waste over periods exceeding 1 million years and demonstrated that this waste remains hazardous essentially indefinitely. This paper presents a novel perspective by focusing on the practical requirement of shielding to protect from this hazard. Using concrete as the reference material, this paper shows that the required thicknesses stabilize to several tens of centimeters at 1 million years and must remain robust for each individual spent fuel (SF) and vitrified high-level waste (VHLW) form essentially indefinitely, including relevant fragments. These new results provide an additional perspective on an enduring hazard that has been overlooked in discussions of the choice of fuel cycle and in the design and safety analysis of geological repositories. Further research and data needs are identified. UNESCO Chair on Heritage Future
Thermal Plasticity in a Cross-Sexual Transfer Trait : Geographic Variation and Phenotypic Integration of Blue Wing Colour in Female Butterflies
Within-sex phenotypic variation can arise through co-option of sexual differentiation mechanisms. Recently, several such cross-sexual-transfer traits have been identified, but we lack a mechanistic understanding of their geographic variation, environmental influences, and phenotypic integration with other traits. Male Polyommatus icarus butterflies are blue, whereas female wing coloration varies from brown to blue. Here, we show that female wing colour varies in a geographic mosaic, with the spring generation being bluer than the summer generation. Laboratory experiments revealed that females developed both bluer wings and increased phenotypic integration between the amount of blue and total wing area at low temperature, qualitatively matching differences between spring and summer generations. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that female and male colour develop through similar mechanisms, supporting the cross-sexual-transfer hypothesis. Our study establishes a promising study system on cross-sexual-transfer and a solid foundation for research on the fitness consequences and evolutionary history of this trait
Development of packaging systems to reduce handling costs in retail companies : A case study on Clas Ohlson AB
Background: Employees at Clas Ohlson’s distribution center identified packaging and the number of consumer packaging's per packaging system as a major factor leading to excessive handling, as the volumes sometimes exceeds the store’s demand. Store employees also pointed out that packaging takes up a significant part of their working hours. Currently, deliveries of large volumes of consumer packaging's in the packaging systems result in a additional handling. Handling costs can arise at several stages in a supply chain, and reducing costs in one stage may increase them in another. Therefore, reducing handling costs is a complex issue, and potential developments should consider both store level and distribution center handling costs. Additionally, Clas Ohlson is aware that changes to their packaging systems may significantly affect their container fill rates and carbon dioxide emissions. As a result, this study also investigates the impact of the proposed developments on container fill rate and carbon dioxide emissions. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reduce handling costs in retail companies by developing the number of consumer packaging's per packaging system. It also aims to investigate the environmental consequences of such developments in terms of container fill rate and carbon dioxide emissions from transport. Method: This study is a case study of the retail company Clas Ohlson and uses both quantitative and qualitative research methods, characterized by a deductive approach. Empirical data was collected through snowball sampling and unstructured interviews with Clas Ohlsons employees, which were then analyzed alongside theoretical frameworks through pattern matching. Results: This study analyzed three research questions. The first aimed to reduce Clas Ohlson’s handling costs by developing the number of consumer packaging's per packaging system. Results showed that handling costs could be reduced for all nine products examined. The second research question addressed how handling costs could be reduced in retail companies generally. The conclusion showed that several approaches exist for handling cost reduction and highlighted important factors to consider during the process. The third research question focused on the environmental consequences of the developments explored in the first question. The conclusion indicates that the optimized packaging systems reduce container fill rates and result in higher carbon dioxide emissions. Therefore, any such development should be carefully evaluated with respect to its broader effects.
Designed safety: Safety-enhancing measures for women in public outdoor environments in Dalbo, Araby, Växjö
This study examines how the physical environment in Araby, Växjö, with a focus on Skatan 12 in Dalbo, influences women’s perceptions of safety. Through interviews, surveys, and field studies, factors such as lighting, sightlines, and the presence of people have been identified as crucial for creating a sense of security. The study is complemented by a comparative analysis of safety measures implemented in Malmö to strengthen the design proposals. The results show that feelings of safety are situational and particularly influenced by the time of day and the design of the environment. Dark and secluded areas are generally perceived as unsafe, leading women to avoid these places, especially in the evening. The design proposal for Skatan 12 aims to enhance safety through a mixed-use building featuring a greenhouse and spaces for social activities like sewing groups and language cafés, fostering social interaction year-round. At Dalbotorg, playgrounds, pergolas, and a splash pool are planned to create safe and playful environments, considering the area's socio-economic conditions. The housing is designed on a human scale, using natural materials and positioned to increase visual contact and social control, thereby strengthening the sense of safety. The area's cultural heritage is preserved by integrating the sculpture "Blända" and surrounding flowerbeds, contributing to a sense of belonging and security. The study emphasizes that safety requires both physical and social interventions to achieve long-term effects and that combining local knowledge with experiences from other areas provides a broad and inclusive foundation for future urban development
“It’s what happens in the back of one’s mind” : nurses and nursing students information activities when they watch tv-series.
Placed within everyday life information seeking, the aim of this thesis is to explore the information activities of nurses and nursing students regarding the information they encounter in fictional tv-series. This will be done by looking at the activities of the informants that involve finding, using, and sharing information and their credibility assessment of information sources during those activities. Our theoretical framework consists of the everyday information practices model by Savolainen, McKenzie’s model of everyday information seeking, together with the concept of cognitive authority by Wilson. This framework will be used to analyze and interpret the empirical material. The empirical material is based on six qualitative semistructured interviews in Sweden, whereof three informants are nurses and three are nursing students. The results indicate that nurses and nursing students perform several different information activities when they watch tv-series. One interesting find is that the majority of the informants describe that their finding of information in certain occasions leads to online searching to assess the credibility or to learn more.
Blood of the earth : Stories of iron in (extr)activist times
This independent project addresses the metal iron and the complexities its extraction can bring as well as its culture significance. It showcases the importance of this metal in our society, as well as spotlighting the extractive and harmful practices it entails. Including the land grabbing of the Sámi people. The project focuses on Sweden and in specific on Kiruna. Where the iron ore mine basically rules the town and heavily influences the local communities in positive and negative ways. In focus is the expansion of the Per Geijer deposit and its complexities it brings. As a need for the green energy transition in Europe, which lands on the shoulders of the local Sámi village that will not be able to practice their culture anymore. It dives as well into the past where in Småland lake ore was harvested from the bottom of lakes. The path forward envisions a future where we together can move to an interconnected degrowing and decolonized society that values the indigenous and incorporates them in decision making and climate solutions. A society that lives with the land in stewardship together. Asking if there are other possibilities to a green energy transition, without needing to destroy cultural and natural habitat. The design project is an interactive exhibition that brings visitors from the Himmelsberga museum of the future closer to the metal Iron and its extractive sides. The outcome is shaped in an accordion fold artist-book that is consciously bulky and hard to handle, mirroring the topic. It combines self-made pictures, poems, paint out of menstrual blood and self-harvested iron oxide, stamps and letterpress, with the raw metal that is laying around it. It takes the visitors on a journey to the different places in a long meandering collage. The Blood Of The Earth Leporello can be read and interacted with in many ways and has a performative potential to it. Functioning as a tool to inform about complexities, give a voice to marginalized stakeholders and to politicise, hopefully raising dialogue and awareness.
