How Philanthropic CSR Influences Customer Perceptions in Local Banks : A quantitative study on awareness, credibility, and local benefits as drivers of customer satisfaction
Background: Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has received increasing attention in both research and practice, particularly regarding how organizations’ societal engagement influences customer perceptions and evaluations. Within locally rooted organizations, local and philanthropic engagement is often emphasized as a central component of CSR initiatives. Previous research suggests that CSR activities can influence customer satisfaction; however, findings are not unequivocal and the relationship appears to be context-dependent. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how three dimensions of perceived philanthropic social engagement, awareness, perceived credibility, and perceived local benefit influence customer satisfaction among customers of a locally rooted organization. Methodology: This study employed a quantitative and deductive research approach. Data were collected through a cross-sectional survey targeting a savingsbank’s customers, resulting in 377 valid responses. The questionnaire measured customer satisfaction and the three CSR dimensions using five-point Likert scales. Statistical analyses were conducted in IBM SPSS and included reliability analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. Age and residential proximity were included as control variables. Findings: The results of the multiple regression analysis indicate that perceived credibility of the savingsbank’s philanthropic engagement has a statistically significant and positive effect on customer satisfaction. In contrast, neither awareness nor perceived local benefit showed a significant effect on customer satisfaction when all variables were analyzed simultaneously. The control variables age and residential proximity did not explain any substantial variation in customer satisfaction. The full regression model explained approximately 41 percent of the variance in customer satisfaction. Conclusion: The findings suggest that it is not the amount of information about the savingsbank’s engagement nor the perceived local benefit per se that drives customer satisfaction, but rather how credible the savingsbank’s social engagement is perceived to be. This highlights the importance of authenticity and trust-building communication in savings banks' CSR efforts. More Than a Trip: How Travel Experiences Transform Relationship Bond
Couple travel, as a significant segment within the tourism industry, has been shown to enhance relationship satisfaction, cohesion, and flexibility. However, existing research often treats travel as a holistic event, with limited exploration of specific tourism elements that drive changes in intimacy during the journey. Through semi-structured interviews and constructivist approach, this study identifies key tourism elements that enhance intimacy and reveals their underlying mechanisms. Findings indicate that positive experiences with these elements significantly correlate with increased partner closeness. This research offers a nuanced perspective on how travel shapes intimate relationships and provides practical insights for designing couple-oriented tourism products
Involving Next of Kin in Forensic Psychiatric Care : <em data-start="57" data-end="138">A study of healthcare professionals’ experiences, challenges, and opportunities
Background: Family involvement is highlighted in research as a central componentof family-centered psychiatric nursing and as an important factor for patientrecovery within forensic psychiatric care. Despite this, previous studies show thatstructured approaches to involving family members are only partially implemented, and the forensic context is characterized by legal, organizational, and relationalchallenges. Aim: The aim of this study was to explore factors that facilitate or hinder staff inforensic psychiatric inpatient care from involving family members in the careprocess. Methods: A mixed-method approach with a descriptive cross-sectional design wasused. An anonymous questionnaire was distributed to staff in forensic psychiatricinpatient care, and 42 responses were analyzed. Quantitative data were presenteddescriptively, and qualitative free-text responses were analyzed using thematicanalysis following Braun and Clarke. Results: Staff described family members as valuable resources in the care process;however, opportunities to involve them were constrained by confidentialityregulations, time limitations, unclear routines, and varying organizationalconditions. Most participants lacked training in family-centered practices andexpressed a need for further competence development. The thematic analysisresulted in five themes reflecting organizational structures, leadership andprofessional support, ethical and legal dilemmas, communication and relationalfactors, and perspectives on future development. Conclusion: The study identifies a clear implementation gap between intentions andthe practical conditions for involving family members. Strengthening familycentered approaches requires clearer routines, educational initiatives, reflectiveforums, and engaged leadership. A more consistent structure may enhance patientrecovery and improve support for family members within forensic psychiatricsettings
Can Physical Exercise Predict Perceived Life Satisfaction? : A Quantitative Study of the Relationship Between Physical Exercise and Perceived Life Satisfaction.
The aim of this study was to examine whether individuals’ physical exercise could predict their perceived life satisfaction, as well as to identify which frequency of physical exercise primarily contributes to higher life satisfaction. It was expected that the group with a higher frequency of physical exercise would report higher life satisfaction. The study included 105 participants from a city in Sweden who completed a questionnaire regarding their life satisfaction and physical exercise. Life satisfaction was measured using the Satisfaction With Life Scale, and physical exercise was measured using the Godin Leisure-Time Exercise Questionnaire. The results showed no significant association between life satisfaction and physical exercise in the sample. The findings of this study do not support previous research, which may be attributed to limitations in the methodological choices. Consequently, the conclusion was that further research on a Swedish population is needed within this field.
Trust in the digital media landscape : A study of generational perceptions of credibility and responsibility in citizen journalism and traditional news media
The digital media landscape has changed how political information is produced and shared. Social media platforms such as TikTok, YouTube, and X (formerly Twitter) allow individuals without journalistic training to publish political content to large audiences. These actors, often described as citizen journalists, challenge the traditional role of professional news media. This development raises important questions about credibility, legitimacy, and responsibility in political communication. The purpose of this study is to examine how different generations in Sweden perceive political content produced by Swedish citizen journalists on social media, compared to political journalism from traditional Swedish news media. The study uses gatekeeping theory, participatory culture, and public sphere theory to understand how trust in media is shaped in a digital environment where professional and non-professional actors coexist. The study is based on a quantitative survey conducted among Swedish respondents from different age groups. To support the survey, a small content analysis was carried out to clarify the distinction between citizen journalists and traditional news media. Credibility, legitimacy, and responsibility were measured using index-based Likert-scale questions, which made it possible to compare perceptions between generations. The results show that traditional news media are generally perceived as more credible and responsible than citizen journalists across all age groups. However, younger respondents express slightly higher trust in citizen journalists than older respondents. Older generations tend to rely more strongly on traditional news media or express uncertainty toward political content on social media. Overall, the findings suggest that citizen journalism functions mainly as a complement to traditional journalism, while professional news media remain central for trust and democratic legitimacy
”We should be there for the students” : School librarians’ use and experiences of bibliotherapy for a safer social school environment
Pupils’ sense of safety in Swedish schools has decreased, with many feeling unsafe and experiencing bullying. In addition to teaching knowledge, the school’s mission includes supporting pupils’ social development, a sense of belonging, and feelings of security. The school library and the school librarian are not always utilised in this work, despite the potential of bibliotherapy as a tool to promote safety and a positive social school environment. Bibliotherapy is a form of therapeutic reading combined with supportive discussions with a bibliotherapist, who could, among other professions, be a school librarian. The aim of this study is to investigate how school librarians in Sweden experience their work with bibliotherapy among pupils in primary and middle schools, and how they perceive the impact it has on pupils’ sense of safety and the social school environment. The study adopts a qualitative approach, in which empirical data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six school librarians and analysed using thematic analysis and Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory. The results show that the school librarians to some extent work with bibliotherapy, although none had previously used the term to describe their practice. Bibliotherapeutic activities primarily take place in group settings, using fiction literature, and are conducted through book recommendations, reading aloud, and reading groups. The majority report positive effects of their bibliotherapeutic interventions on school safety and the social environment, but also identify a lack of time, resources, collaboration, and understanding from colleagues and school leadership. Both the study’s empirical findings and previous research indicate that school librarians can work bibliotherapeutically to promote a safe and a positive social school climate by integrating therapeutic conversations about literature into their existing reading-promotion practices
Person-job fit over time among upper secondary school teachers : Exploring conditions for engagement and well-being
The aim of this study was to explore upper secondary school teachers’ experiences of person–job fit (PJ-fit) over time and how leadership was perceived to influence this relationship. The study also sought to examine how upper secondary school teachers describe themselves in their professional role and how they experienced the conditions for assuming and performing the role required by their work. The study employed a qualitative approach, in which six semistructured interviews with upper secondary school teachers were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis. The findings resulted in four themes and subthemes, showing that the teaching role was characterized by extensive emotional responsibility, where teachers were expected to manage and take responsibility for others’ emotions while their own emotional needs were acknowledged by the organization to a limited extent. Leadership emerged as a central factor influencing how teachers perceived their working conditions, which over time affected their experience of PJ-fit. Overall, the results can be understood as an imbalance between the emotional demands of the job and the available organizational resources, with potentially negative consequences for motivation and well-being. The study may contribute to increased understanding among school leaders of the importance of balancing emotional demands with organizational support, for example through elements of strength-based leadership in which teachers’ individual strengths and emotional needs are more actively recognized and affirmed. Such an approach may contribute to improved conditions for PJ-fit over time
Consensus, conflict and social capital: the conceptualisation of democracy in recent public library research
Purpose: How democracy is understood depends on the theoretical perspective applied. Even so, public library research often takes the concept of democracy for granted. This article explores how democracy is theoretically understood in recent research on public libraries and their role in democracy, including the focus and design of this research, and the key contributions made. Design/methodology/approach: In a comprehensive review of scholarly literature published between 2010 and 2024 and focusing on public libraries and their importance for democracy, 85 articles were selected and included in a conceptual analysis. Findings: The analysis shows that three groups of theoretical perspectives on democracy are commonly represented in public library research: Habermasian consensus-oriented views on democracy, a Mouffean conflict-oriented view of democracy, and democracy understood in relation to social capital. The Habermasian and Mouffean views on democracy are the most widely used, indicating an Apollonian and Dionysian duality in recent public library research. Originality/value: This study is the first large-scale systematic review explicitly categorising and analysing perspectives on democracy in public library research. Implications for library practice and suggestions for future research are presented
Balance between control and self-determination. : A qualitative study of treatment staff’s everyday work at SiS youth residential homes.
This study examines how treatment staff at Swedish SiS youth homes experience and manages the balance between institutional control and youths’ selfdetermination. Using Goffman’s concept of total institutions and Foucault’s ideas on surveillance and normalization, the study investigates how staff navigate conflict-laden situations in daily practice. Data were collected through seven semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically. Results show that control and self-determination coexist in complex, situational practice. Three main themes emerged: (1) relationships and trust, emphasizing the importance of professional yet supportive interactions; (2) balancing control and autonomy, illustrating strategies like providing limited choices within fixed routines; and (3) surveillance, normalization, and boundary-setting, highlighting how institutional structures shape behavior. The study contributes to knowledge on institutional care by showing how staff negotiate tensions between security, care, and autonomy, and how relationships function as both a resource and a potential source of conflict. The findings have practical implications for staff training, institutional policies, and the development of practices that promote youth empowerment within structured care settings
