Data stories and cognitive load: a systematic review of the picture superiority effect

    No full text
This study investigates the Picture Superiority Effect (PSE) as a mechanism for enhancing data storytelling and reducing cognitive load. A systematic literature review (SLR) of 16 peer-reviewed studies published between January 2022 and June 2025 was conducted following PRISMA 2020 and CASP guidelines. Results show that visual formats such as infographics, dashboards, and data comics outperform text-only approaches, particularly when tailored to audience expertise and domain context. Relevant, well-integrated visuals improve memory retention, engagement, and comprehension, whereas irrelevant or overly complex visuals can increase cognitive load. The synthesis draws on Dual Coding Theory, Cognitive Load Theory, and Cognitive Semiotics to explain these effects. Despite growing adoption of PSE-based approaches, challenges persist in developing standardized design guidelines, accurately measuring cognitive load, and adapting visuals for diverse audiences. This review consolidates empirical evidence, identifies key research gaps, and offers design recommendations for adaptive, user-centered visual storytelling applicable to domains including education, healthcare, and governance

Pelaksanaan penilaian perlu telus, bukan eksperimen, dan digunakan untuk memberi sokongan serta penjagaan kebajikan kanak-kanak

Translation and validation of English version of screen dependency scale (SDS) among preschool children

    No full text
The Screen Dependency Scale (SDS) is a parent-report tool designed to assess screen media dependency in preschool children which was originally developed in Malay within the Malaysian community. This study aimed to translate and validate the English version of the Screen Dependency Scale (SDS) to enable broader participation, particularly in urban areas where English is widely used. Phase 1 involved forward and backward translation by 2 language experts. An addiction specialist reviewed the back-translated version against the original followed by Face Validity by 14 parents. Phase 2 consisted of a cross-sectional study involving 195 parents of children aged 4 to 6 years. Construct validity was tested using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) followed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). CFA showed all items had factor loadings of 0.50 or higher. Model fit indices (RMSEA = 0.08; CFI = 0.92) indicated a good fit. The English SDS demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha = .89). Thus, the English version is a valid and reliable tool for assessing screen dependency in Malaysian preschooler

Perioperative characteristics and outcomes of colorectal cancer in elderly patients

BACKGROUND Colorectal cancer (CRC) in older adults presents unique management challenges due to age-related physiological changes and comorbidities. However, this demographic is often underrepresented in clinical research. AIM To characterise the perioperative features and outcomes of older CRC patients undergoing surgery at a tertiary hospital in Malaysia. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted using patient records of older individuals (≥ 65 years old) diagnosed with CRC and who underwent surgery at USM Specialist Hospital, Malaysia, between January 2017 and December 2021. Data on patient characteristics, operative details, pathological findings, body mass index (BMI) based on the Asian classification and postoperative outcomes were collected. Statistical analysis employed χ 2 and t-tests to determine associations and identify significant predictors. RESULTS The study included 98 participants (57.1% males, 82.7% Malay), with the majority aged 65-69 years (44.9%). BMI indicated a significant association with age group (P = 0.023), with obesity more prevalent among individuals aged 70-74 years and 75-79 years. Type of operation (P = 0.046) and PN stage (P = 0.027) were also significantly associated with age group. Adjuvant treatment demonstrated a significant association with recurrence and follow-up (P = 0.006). Multivariate analysis revealed that BMI, ischaemic heart disease, and M stage were statistically significant predictors of patient survival after follow-up. Overweight patients were 11.22 times more likely to survive than those who were underweight [adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 11.22, P = 0.016], whereas patients with ischaemic heart disease (aOR = 0.07, P = 0.027) or M1 stage disease (aOR = 0.24, P = 0.014) had significantly lower survival odds. CONCLUSION BMI, ischaemic heart disease, and metastatic status are critical determinants of survival, highlighting the importance of comprehensive preoperative assessment and individualised management strategies in this vulnerable population. Further larger-scale, longitudinal studies are needed to improve outcomes among older adults with CRC

    Honey's antiviral research landscape: a 28-year bibliometric analysis (1996–2024)

Context: Honey, a natural bee product, has been widely used for its therapeutic properties, including potential antiviral effects. Aims: To evaluate global research trends on honey’s antiviral properties through a bibliometric analysis. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using the Scopus database for documents published between 1996 and 2024. Data were extracted using specific search queries and analysed using Bibliometrix R, Excel, Publish or Perish, and Zotero software. Results: A total of 83 documents were retrieved and analysed. There was a marked rise in global research interest in honey’s antiviral properties, with a sharp increase in publications during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thematic mapping indicated that while honey is a central topic, most studies remain preclinical or review-based, with limited translational research. Conclusions: Research on honey’s antiviral effects is expanding, yet more mechanistic and clinical investigations are required to substantiate its therapeutic potential

Sublingual hematoma secondary to mandibular trauma mimicking Ludwig’s angina: a clinical conundrum

Background Sublingual haematoma, or pseudo-Ludwig’s angina, is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition that mimics Ludwig’s angina. Prompt differentiation between hemorrhagic and infectious etiologies of floor of mouth swelling is crucial for appropriate airway and therapeutic management (Baharloo et al., 2020; Cheng et al., 2021; Marin et al., 2020). Case Report We report the case of a 19-year-old male who sustained mandibular trauma in a motor vehicle accident. He presented with progressive submental swelling, muffled voice, and elevation of the tongue, raising suspicion for Ludwig’s angina. Imaging revealed mandibular symphysis and condylar fractures with sublingual hematoma, but no evidence of abscess or gas formation. Flexible endoscopy showed posterior tongue displacement without laryngeal involvement. The patient was managed conservatively with corticosteroids, antifibrinolytics, and antibiotics. Airway intervention was not required. Definitive surgical fixation of mandibular fractures was performed after clinical stabilization. The hematoma resolved completely without complication. Discussion This case highlights the diagnostic challenge in distinguishing pseudo-Ludwig’s angina from true deep neck infections. While both conditions may present with similar clinical findings, imaging and endoscopy play vital roles in guiding management (Alamoudi & Hariri, 2022; Brotfain et al., 2012). Unlike Ludwig’s angina, sublingual hematomas often respond to conservative therapy and rarely necessitate surgical airway intervention unless rapidly expanding or causing obstruction (Lovallo et al., 2013). Conclusion Sublingual hematoma secondary to mandibular trauma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of floor-of-mouth swelling. Early imaging and interdisciplinary evaluation are essential to avoid misdiagnosis and unnecessary invasive procedures

Ultrasound guided dextrose prolotherapy for chronic medial collateral ligament injuries in young footballers

Dextrose prolotherapy (DPT) is increasingly recognized for its regenerative potential in managing ligamentous injuries. However, evidence supporting its use in medial collateral ligament (MCL) injuries among young athletes remains scarce. This case series describes four adolescent footballers (aged 14–16 years) with chronic medial knee pain unresponsive to rehabilitation. Three athletes with isolated MCL injuries achieved complete pain resolution within 4 –6 weeks following ultrasound-guided 12.5% dextrose injections, combined with knee bracing and structured rehabilitation. They successfully returned to full training after passing functional assessments, with no reinjury at 3- and 6- month follow-ups. Conversely, the fourth athlete, with concomitant MCL, anterior cruciate ligament, and meniscal injuries, experienced only partial pain relief and sustained reinjury after premature return to play, ultimately requiring surgical intervention. These findings suggest that DPT may accelerate recovery in isolated chronic MCL injuries but has limited benefit in multiligament knee injuries
