The development of policies on generative artificial intelligence in UK universities

No full text
Introduction. This study examines the development and diffusion of generative AI policies in UK universities, particularly in relation to the Russell Group principles. It explores factors influencing policy adaptation, institutional resource disparities, and challenges and opportunities in AI integration. Method. The research employs a document analysis approach, reviewing publicly available policy documents, university websites, and reports. It categorizes institutions using Boliver’s(2015) clustering and applies theoretical frameworks such as institutional theory, policy diffusion, and punctuated equilibrium. Results. Russell Group universities lead in AI policy development, emphasizing AI literacy, though support varies. Non-Russell Group institutions show diverse responses, influenced by resource availability. Policy diffusion is evident, with some universities adopting Russell Group approaches. Challenges include academic integrity, equitable AI access, and adapting assessment methods. University libraries play a growing role in AI literacy. Conclusions. Universities should adopt a collaborative approach to policy development, involving multiple stakeholders. Addressing resource disparities is essential to prevent widening inequalities. Institutions must rethink assessment strategies and enhance AI literacy training, with libraries playing a key role in ethical AI use

Nurses’ attitudes toward family importance in heart failure care

No full text
Background: Support from the family positively affects self-management, patient outcomes and the incidence of hospitalizations among patients with heart failure (HF). To involve family members in HF care is thus valuable for the patients. Registered nurses (RNs) frequently meet family members to patients with HF and the quality of these encounters are likely to be influenced by the attitudes RNs hold toward families. Aims: To explore RNs' attitudes toward the importance of families' involvement in HF nursing care and to identify factors that predict the most supportive attitudes. Methods: Cross-sectional, multicentre web-survey study. A sample of 303 RNs from 47 hospitals and 30 primary health care centres (PHCC) completed the instrument Families’ Importance in Nursing Care - Nurses’ Attitudes. Results: Overall, RNs were supportive of families' involvement. Nonetheless, attitudes toward inviting families to actively take part in HF nursing care and involve families in planning of care were less supportive. Factors predicting the most supportive attitudes were to work in a PHCC, a HF clinic, a workplace with a general approach toward families, to have a postgraduate specialization, education in cardiac and or HF nursing care, and a competence to work with families. Conclusions: Experienced RNs in HF nursing care can be encouraged to mentor their younger and less experienced colleagues to strengthen their supportive attitudes toward families. RNs who have designated consultation time with patients and families, as in a nurse-led HF clinic, may have the most favourable condition for implementing a more supportive approach to families

Lärares professionella behov så som de konstrueras av en inflytelserik kompetensutvecklingsaktör

No full text

Comparison of the university hospital and county hospitals in western Sweden to identify potential weak links in the early chain of care for acute stroke : Results of an observational study

No full text
Objective: To identify weak links in the early chain of care for acute stroke. Setting: Nine emergency hospitals in western Sweden, each with a stroke unit, and the emergency medical services (EMS). Participants: All patients hospitalised with a first and a final diagnosis of stroke − between December 15, 2010 and April 15, 2011. The university hospital in the city of Gothenburg was compared with six county hospitals. Primary and secondary measures: (1) The system delay, i.e. median delay time from call to the EMS until diagnosis was designated as the primary endpoint. Secondary endpoints were: (2) the system delay time from call to the EMS until arrival in a hospital ward, (3) the use of the EMS, (4) priority at the dispatch centre and (5) suspicion of stroke by the EMS nurse. Results: In all, 1,376 acute patients with stroke (median age 79 years; 49% women) were included. The median system delay from call to the EMS until (1) diagnosis (CT scan) and (2) arrival in a hospital ward was 3 hours and 52 minutes and 4 hours and 22 minutes respectively. The system delay (1) was significantly shorter in the county hospitals. (3) The study showed that 76% used the EMS (Gothenburg 71%; the county 79%) (p <0.0001). (4) Priority 1 was given at the dispatch centre in 54% of cases. (5) Stroke was suspected in 65%. A prenotification was sent in 32% (Gothenburg 52%; the county 20%) (p <0.0001). Conclusion: System delay is still long and only a small fraction of patients received thrombolysis. Three of four used the EMS (more frequent in the county). They were given highest priority at the dispatch centre in half of the cases. Stroke was suspected in two thirds of the cases, but a prenotification was seldom sent to the hospital.Hjärnvägen

Where is information management research?

No full text
We report on a preliminary investigation into the current scope of research in information management, adopting a conceptual approach derived from previous work by Hjørland in information science and by Palvia in infor- mation systems. We created a data-set of 107 articles resulting from a search in Web of Science, using the search strategy of the term information management in the titles of articles, and then restricting the analysis to those journals we identified as having an information science orientation, rather than an infor- mation systems orientation. The analysis reveals the International Journal of Information Management as the most significant journal in the field, but also draws attention to the rise of interest in the field through contributions to two Brazilian journals and one Spanish journal. The thematic analysis revealed that the dominant research themes from the information science perspective were empirical user studies, studies of the structural and institutional approach, and information system usage and adoption. Further work will be undertaken to ex- plore the relevance of the approach in the analysis of other document sets from areas such as health care, construction and engineering.

Membrane stress analysis of collapsible tanks andbioreactors

Collapsible tanks, vessels or bioreactors are finding increasing usage in small/medium scaleprocesses because they offer flexibility and lower cost. However, if they are to be used atlarge scale, they need to be shown capable of handling the physical stress exerted on them.Because of their nonconventional shape and non-uniform pressure distribution, thin shellanalysis cannot be used in calculating their stress. Defining curvature in terms of pressureaddressed these challenges. Using curvature and numerical analysis, the membrane stress incollapsible tanks designed as bioreactors of volumes between 100-1000 m3 were calculated. When the liquid/gas height and static pressure are known, an equation for calculating tensionper length was developed. An equation that could calculate the liquid height from thebioreactor’s volume, dimensions and working capacity was generated. The equation gavevalues of liquid height with a maximum deviation of 3% from that calculated by curvatureanalysis. The stress values from the liquid height and tension equations had a maximumdeviation of 6% from those calculated by curvature analysis. The calculated tensile stress in a1000 m3 collapsible tank was 14.2 MPa. From these calculations, materials that optimize bothcost and safety can be selected when designing collapsible tanks

Time to read : Exploring the timespaces of subscription-based audiobooks

No full text
With remediation of the printed book into audiobook subscription services, reading by listening is becoming a popular alternative to reading by seeing. This article explores when people read by listening and whether there may be a shift regarding the places and times people read by listening rather than by seeing. Based on a considerable dataset from a Swedish subscription service for digital books, this article reveals that audiobook reading takes place at somewhat different times than expected and that subscribers read significant amounts each day. The findings indicate that the remediation into reading by listening using digital audiobooks may close the gender gap common in reading, as the reading practices of men and women are very similar, with men even reading slightly more than women. The reading practices of young adults are also similar to the larger population. Furthermore, the concepts stationary reading, mobile reading and stationary/mobile reading are introduced
