    My teammate is an AI : evaluating generative AI in game asset creation through a post-gamejam study

    This study explores the integration of generative AI into game development, focusing on its use during a university-led game jam involving undergraduate students. The research investigates whether generative AI holds significance for the future of game creation - highlighting its potential or otherwise to transform asset production, team dynamics, and creative workflows. It examines how AI-driven tools such as ChatGPT and DALL-E impacted the development process, enabling hybrid roles and streamlining production tasks that involve repetitive visual patterns or templated interface elements. However, limitations emerged, including asset reliability, quality, and creative customisation challenges. Finding what this means for the broader industry while emphasising the importance of refining AI tools to balance efficiency with artistic integrity. A significant number of participants (46%) reported notable learning gains, reflecting improved technical skills and a deeper understanding of AI's role in creative processes. These results point to broader questions for future policy, including intellectual property, ethical data use, and inclusive development - although such issues were not explicitly raised by participants during the study. This research offers insights for advancing AI-human collaboration models to support sustainable, innovative, and culturally diverse game production.peer-reviewe

    Computed tomography (CT) technology has undergone rapid evolution in recent years. The introduction of photon-counting CT has already begun reshaping the fundamental principles of CT imaging. In this context of innovation, dark-field CT (DFCT) is emerging as a promising advancement, offering a new imaging contrast based on small-angle X-ray scattering rather than traditional attenuation. This article aims to explore the potential role of DFCT in medical imaging, reviewing the current state of the technology, its underlying physical principles, and the advantages demonstrated in preclinical studies, particularly in detecting microstructural changes in tissues such as the lungs and bones. Although still in the experimental phase, DFCT represents a novel and potentially transformative tool that could complement conventional CT and expand diagnostic capabilities in the future.peer-reviewe

    Cosmological scalar perturbations in Horndeski-like gravity

    Scalar-tensor theories are promising dark energy models. A promising scalar-tensor theory, called Horndeski-like gravity, is coming from the application of the Horndeski gravity in string theory and cosmology that takes into account two dilaton fields. In this work we study the stability of the scalar sector of this theory and compare it with that coming from the previously studied tensor sector. With the first-order formalism we investigate the allowed background solutions. Focusing on the background solution with a single scalar field, the entropy coming from particle production Sin and that of the apparent horizon S will be studied, which translates into entropy bounds. These entropy bounds are compared with the stability of the scalar and tensor sector as well. The gravitational slip (minus one) to entropy ratio is also considered as a possible replacement for the usual shear viscosity to entropy ratio for black holes.peer-reviewe

    Deprescribing tendencies within primary health care : a literature review

    The author would like to acknowledge the University of Buckingham for the opportunity to provide this review within its course.BACKGROUND: Polypharmacy increases in older persons and in multimorbid patients thus becoming prevalent in primary health care. While deprescribing offers a patient-centered, systematic approach to reducing potentially inappropriate medicines, implementation remains inconsistent based on clinical, systemic, and patient-level factors.AIM: The purpose of this literature review is to outline the enablers and barriers of deprescribing in primary care and, on the basis of current evidence, identify successful solutions for implementation.METHOD: A review of the literature was performed utilising PubMed, Medline, Cochrane Library and Embase, as institutional databases. English publications between 2020 and mid-2025 were screened utilising predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP) framework was used to critically appraise the peer-reviewed articles. Data were synthesised thematically with arising patterns grouped into their own main themes and sub-themes.RESULTS: Dominant themes that occurred were prescriber confidence, patient refusal, time constraints, and lack of overt guidelines as key barriers. Enablers such as multidisciplinary collaboration, use of evidence-based deprescribing tools (e.g. STOPP/ START, Beers Criteria), and patient engagement were reported across all settings. Implementation strategies varied between settings but the majority contained important pharmacist interventions, education programmes, and formal implementation protocols.CONCLUSION: Deprescribing within primary care can be done and is necessary but requires multi-faceted interventions targeting individual prescribers, systems, and patients. To enhance uptake and sustainment, deprescribing has to be incorporated into routine care in combination with training, decision aids, and policy-level promotion.peer-reviewe

    Offshore renewable energies : exploring floating modular energy islands : materials, construction technologies, and life cycle assessment

    Floating modular energy islands (FMEIs) are modular, interconnected floating structures designed to collectively produce, store, convert, and transport renewable energy. This review aims to establish a foundation for developing innovative approaches to sustainably harness multi-energy sources in offshore environments. It leverages existing technological expertise while exploring new solutions to address specific challenges associated with FMEIs. The review initially presents existing technologies for floating energy structures and assesses their applicability to FMEI. The structural materials that could be utilised for the construction of a floating energy island are subsequently reviewed. Next, the offshore construction technologies suitable for FMEI are reviewed. Finally, studies on the life cycle assessment of hybrid energy systems are examined, highlighting the environmental advantages of integrating multiple renewable energy sources, thereby underscoring the potential of FMEIs.peer-reviewe

    More is not always better : delta-downscaling climate model outputs from 30 to 5 min resolution has minimal impact on coherence with Late Quaternary proxies

    Both proxies and models provide key resources to explore how palaeoenvironmental changes may have impacted diverse biotic communities and cultural processes. While proxies are thought to provide the “gold standard” in reconstructing the local environment, they only provide point estimates for a limited number of locations. On the other hand, models have the potential to afford more extensive and standardized geographic coverage of multiple bioclimatic variables. A key decision when using model output is the appropriate geographic resolution to adopt; models are coarse scale, in the order of several arc degrees, and so their outputs are usually downscaled to a higher resolution. Most publicly available model time series have been downscaled to 30 or 60 arcmin, but it is unclear whether such resolution is sufficient for certain applications like species distribution models or whether this may homogenize environments and mask the spatial variability that is often the primary subject of analysis. Here, we explore the impact of increasing the resolution of model output from 30 to 5 arcmin using the delta-downscaling method, which interpolates and applies the long-term difference between past and present model datasets to a higher-resolution grid of observed present-day climate. We seek to determine to what extent further downscaling captures climatic trends at the site level through direct comparison with proxy reconstructions, evaluating different versions of the output from the HadCM3 Global Circulation model for annual temperature, mean temperature of July, and annual precipitation against a large empirical dataset of pollen-based reconstructions from across the Northern Hemisphere. Our results demonstrate that models tend to provide broadly similar accounts of past climate to that obtained from proxy reconstructions, with coherence tending to decline with age and at higher altitudes. However, our results imply that using the delta method to downscale to a very fine resolution has a minimal net effect on the coherence of model output with pollen records in most cases. Optimal spatial resolution is therefore likely to be highly dependent on specific research contexts and questions, with careful consideration required regarding the trade-off between highlighting local-scale variations and increasing potential error via unreliable interpolation.peer-reviewe

    Mutations in the N-domain of aryl hydrocarbon receptor interacting protein affect interactions with heat shock protein 90β and phosphodiesterase 4A5

    The aryl hydrocarbon receptor interacting protein (AIP) is a cytoplasmic molecular co-chaperone and tumour suppressor that assists in protein stability and complex formation involving the aryl hydrocarbon receptor. Germline mutations in the AIP gene predispose to pituitary tumourigenesis with patients exhibiting an aggressive clinical phenotype. Full length AIP proteins harbouring N-domain mutations (R9Q, R16H, V49 M and K103R) were purified from E.coli utilizing a methodology that maintained structural integrity and monomeric stability. Mutations did not significantly affect the thermal stability of the protein and caused no overall disruptive effect in the protein structure. The mutations studied lowered the binding affinity of AIP towards two of its binding partners; heat shock protein 90β and phosphodiesterase 4A5 (PDE4A5). The inhibition of phosphodiesterase activity by AIP was also greatly reduced by all mutants. While previously published data has mainly concentrated on the tetratricopeptide repeats of the C-domain of AIP, we present clear evidence that AIP N-domain mutations play a significant role in two protein:protein interactions with partner proteins. The complex interactome of AIP suggests that any observable change in one or more of its binding partners cannot be disregarded as it may have repercussions on other biochemical pathways.peer-reviewe
