Receiver design for the REACH global 21-cm signal experiment
We detail the REACH radiometric system designed to enable measurements of the
21-cm neutral hydrogen line. Included is the radiometer architecture and end-to-end
system simulations as well as a discussion of the challenges intrinsic to highlycalibratable
system development. Following this, we share laboratory results based on
the calculation of noise wave parameters utilising an over-constrained least squares
approach. For five hours of integration on a custom-made source with comparable
impedance to that of the antenna used in the field, we demonstrate a calibration RMSE
of 80 mK. This paper therefore documents the state of the calibrator and data analysis
in December 2022 in Cambridge before shipping to South Africa.peer-reviewe
Measuring the performance of the Maltese education system : a comparative analysis
Purpose: The aim of this research paper is to compare the investment/output relationship in the Maltese education system with those of four other European Union (EU) countries - France, Germany, Spain, and Sweden. The objectives towards achieving this aim were (i) to develop a standard performance metric built on a number of internationally recognised Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) as a basis for carrying out such comparison; (ii) to determine how the different education systems relatively perform in terms of Value for Money (VFM) for the level of education expenditure per capita, (iii) to evaluate the value-adding projects that have recently been implemented in the Maltese educational system and lastly (iv) to make recommendations for Malta based on any relevant experiences learned from such EU member states. Design/Methodology?Approach: A mixed methodology was adopted to achieve such objectives. Quantitative data was gathered from international education databases primarily sourced from Eurostat statistics and related to the most recently published KPIs of the various countries. A standard performance metric was then created to evaluate different aspects of the education systems and the VFM of each system was assessed by a comparison of the overall performance of each education system against the respective real education expenditure per capita. Additionally, qualitative data was obtained from eleven interviews conducted with key stakeholders in Malta's education sector to identify recent value-adding initiatives and to explore how practices from the other four EU countries could be implemented in Malta. Findings: The findings indicated that, in terms of overall performance and in terms of VFM, the Maltese education system ranked last. While enjoying excellent results in terms of human resources, Malta performed particularly poorly in terms of educational attainment and participation in Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC). On a positive note, the standard performance metric identified areas in which the Maltese education system has made significant progress, these being adult education, transition from education to work and Early Leaving from Education and Training (ELET) rates. Originality/Value: Although the Maltese public authorities have implemented a number of value-adding initiatives aimed at reducing Malta’s ELET rates and addressing the educational spending inefficiency, there is as yet room for improvement as evidenced by the ranking established through this research. Furthermore, this paper sheds particular light on aspects that may necessitate change in the Maltese education system for it to achieve spending efficiency and effectiveness within a small-state context.peer-reviewe

myths, thereby providing a robust foundation for both academic and managerial audiences.peer-reviewe
How trauma is represented on social media : analysis of #trauma content on tiktok
The ways that mental health concepts are represented on social media could have significant implications for lay understandings and behavior. The current article reports an analysis of how trauma is represented on TikTok, one of the world’s most popular social media platforms. Method: Following a search for content using the hashtag #trauma, 143 videos were subjected to qualitative content analysis to characterize the profiles of their producers, intended function, and trauma-related content. Results: Results show that most videos were produced by young White people, who drew on their personal experience of trauma to generate confessional narratives or raise awareness of trauma. Trauma was most often attributed to childhood adversity or relationship difficulties. A diverse range of behaviors and experiences were positioned as evidence of trauma. Conclusions: Findings are consistent with prior suggestions that trauma’s boundaries are expanding in the form of “concept creep,” but also draw attention to the role of humor and irony in social media invocations of the concept. Given the current near-ubiquity of social media consumption, particularly among young people, establishing the implications of exposure to this content should be a priority for future research.peer-reviewe
Secondary school teachers’ experiences with generative AI in Maltese language teaching
In the context of rapid technological advancement, artificial intelligence (AI) presents promising opportunities to enhance language learning through personalized, adaptive, and engaging experiences. Despite its growing role in education, limited research has examined its application to minority languages such as Maltese. This qualitative study addresses that gap by exploring the experiences of 47 secondary school teachers in Malta, 40 of whom have integrated generative AI tools into their teaching practices. Grounded in sociocultural theory and constructivist learning principles, the study used semi-structured interviews to gain insights into how educators employ AI in the classroom. The participants reported using AI for various instructional tasks, including text generation, interactive storytelling, contextual exercises, and personalized feedback in both formative and summative assessments. The participants perceived that AI contributed to improved student proficiency in Maltese, particularly through immediate corrections and tailored feedback. They also observed increased student engagement and motivation, although these insights were based on subjective observations rather than empirical data. In addition to perceived benefits, the participants discussed innovative strategies for AI integration and context specific challenges such as overreliance on technology and the need for teacher training. The findings highlight the potential of generative AI to support differentiated instruction in Maltese language education. By linking theoretical frameworks with practical applications, the study offers a nuanced understanding of AI’s role in teaching a minority language. It also identifies key areas for future research, including the measurable impact of AI on student outcomes and the long-term implications of its integration into Maltese language education.peer-reviewe

Offshore multi-rotor wind turbines : tandem turbine interactions
Multi-rotor turbines are emerging as a promising upscaling solution for offshore wind farms, yet optimization of
these systems, particularly in floating configurations, has received limited attention in the literature. This study
examines the wake recovery and performance of tandem, floating multi-rotor turbines under surge motion,
focusing on wake velocities and dynamic loads experienced by a quad-rotor system. Using a validated actuator
line model, multiple realistic surge conditions are simulated to assess the effects of motion kinematics on wake
behavior and rotor performance. It is demonstrated that tandem quad-rotor systems exhibit superior wake
recovery compared to single rotors, due to enhanced mixing and faster wake diffusion. While surge motion
has minimal effect on average power and thrust coefficients, particularly at low frequencies, it significantly
impacts the wake structure and increases dynamic loads. Findings also indicate that quad-rotor configurations
can mitigate wake effects, improving wind farm efficiency and reducing the risk of dynamic load-induced
fatigue. Thus, insights into wake dynamics and rotor interactions from this study can practically guide the
design and operation of future offshore wind farms providing new insights on how surge motion influences
wake recovery and blade loads in such environments.peer-reviewe
