Iowa's Most Famous Barn
Notes: "Iowa's Most Famous Barn. A Wood Engraving by John DePol. A limestone barn near Cedar Falls, on Route 58, has the reputation as Iowa's most photographed and painted barn. The chances are, however, this wood engraving by the notable xylographer, John DePol, is the first rendition in this old and demanding medium. Known as the Field Stone Barn, after the original owners, it has an Old World charm and solidity that lends itself beautifully to the talented De Pol's engraving burin. The barn was built in 1875 by the two Field brothers who had come to Iowa in 1870, the nasty rumor being that they had made their money running guns to the Rebels during the Civil War. They developed their 960 acre Iowa farm into an English-style, baronial estate. The locals were impressed then as we are today. Printed by The Yellow Barn Press as a keepsake for the meeting oft he letterpress craft and its enthusiasts at the Foolproof Press, Minburn, Iowa, June 11, 1988. Neil Shaver, designer, compositor, and pressman. Printed from the original block in an edition of 200 & signed by the artist." Printed on beige paper. initialed in the illustration
