Imagination and Belief- Newman’s Contribution to the New Evangelization

As the Church follows the call of John Paul II for a New Evangelization, she must consider how the individual person actually comes to belief. Bl. John Henry Newman, soon to be canonized, addressed this question in An Essay in Aid of A Grammar of Assent. According to Newman, religious belief is not just a logical acceptance of intellectual propositions. It is a commitment of the whole person to God, according to the image of God formed in the person’s imagination. (The imagination is that faculty possessed by every human person, which coordinates real life experiences and allows the person to comprehend the real world around him).It is by intentionally employing the imagination, rather than demonstrative logic, that the human person arrives at a belief that is well-grounded, neither cold nor fanatical. Accordingly, our evangelical activity, while never neglecting the truth of the Gospel, should seek to engage the senses and feelings of the human person and not merely the intellect. As the Church follows the call of John Paul II for a New Evangelization, she must consider how the individual person actually comes to belief. Prymas Stefan Wyszyński – „antysemita”, „rasista” i „faszysta”. Historia podwójnej manipulacji tekstami z „Ateneum Kapłańskiego”

    Get PDF
Pieces of information concerning the alleged anti-Semitism, racism and fascism of Rev. Stanisław Wyszyński, who held the position of editor of a monthly periodical “Ateneum Kapłańskie” in the years 1932–1939, appear every now and again in the media. The latest wave of such information swept through internet portals and forums between 2012–2014, mostly due to activity of Janusz Palikot, a politician at the time, who wrote on his blog that “Primate of the Millennium, Wyszyński, when still an ordinary priest and theologist, was a proponent of Nazism and Hitler himself, which was clear from the articles he published”. Three months later seven quotations were posted on the forum.gazeta.pl website – quotations supposedly taken from Wyszyński’s articles, published in ‘‘Ateneum Kapłańskie”, with the purpose of proving the priest’s alleged anti-Semitic, racist and Nazi views. From that moment, the information took on a life of its own and began to appear on numerous forums, portals and in public television. In November 2013 in a TV program “Świat się kręci” actor Jacek Poniedziałek accused Primate Wyszyński of anti-Semitic and pro-eugenics statements. This manipulation is of dual nature. Firstly, the quotations (which were, at times, distorted) do not come from articles by Stefan Wyszyński. They were written by Rev. Józef Pastuszka and Rev. Paweł Tochowicz. The analysis of the actual source articles (including the quotations in their proper context) shows that the authors, while conducting a multifarious scientific analysis of racism, nationalism and politicism, criticized Hitler’s views from the catholic standpoint.Informacje o rzekomym antysemityzmie, rasizmie i faszyzmie ks.

The future Professor of the Catholic University of Lublin, Fr. Józef Adam Pastuszka, in 1912, began studies at the Theological Seminary in Sandomierz and continued them until the First World War. It was then, after the hostilities of 1915, that he was, together with his parents and siblings, moved to the East near Brest. When he managed to get to St. Petersburg, he continued his studies at the local seminary for two years. During the year 1917-1918, he was a student at the Spiritual Academy of St. Petersburg, where the University of Lublin had its beginning, a kind of “prehistory.” Fr. Idzi Radziszewski was the Academy’s rector. In 1917-1918, the rector of the Academy of St. Petersburg undertook the organization of the University of Lublin. In his memories, Fr. Józef Pastuszka expressed his conviction that there existed connections between the Spiritual Academy of St. Petersburg, which ceased to exist after the October Revolution, and the Catholic University of Lublin, established in 1918. These relations were based on the fact that the Archbishop of Mohilev, residing in St. Petersburg as the superior authority of the Academy, transferred the rights and privileges of the Academy to the University of Lublin. In July 1918, as a subdeacon, Józef Adam Pastuszka returned to Poland. Having completed his first year of study in St. Petersburg, he was directed by the diocesan authorities in Sandomierz to study in Innsbruck (Austria). At the end of October 1920, he received a doctoral degree, and in 1930 he conducted a post-doctoral colloquium at the Jagiellonian University, obtained the title of Associate Professor of Philosophy, and took a job at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Warsaw. In 1934, he was employed at the Faculty of Humanities at the Catholic University of Lublin. When the war broke out in 1939, the University of Lublin was closed. In mid-April 1945, the professor returned to Lublin and took up the former chair of general psychology at the Catholic University of Lublin. In September 1952, he was removed from the University. In 1956, Józef Pastuszka returned to work at the Catholic University of Lublin again. In July 1969 he retired, while in 1978 he left Lublin to live in the chapter house in Sandomierz. He died on January 13, 1989 in Sandomierz, and on January 17, funeral ceremonies took place in the Cathedral of Sandomierz. On January 21, 1989 he was buried in the home Parish of Rzeczniów. Profesor powrócił do Lublina i objął dawną katedrę psychologii ogólnej w Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim. We wrześniu 1952 r. został usunięty z Uczelni. W 1956 ks. Józef Pastuszka znów powrócił do pracy na KUL.W lipcu 1969 r. przeszedł na emeryturę, w 1978 r., opuścił Lublin i zamieszkał w domu kapitulnym w Sandomierzu. Zmarł 13 stycznia 1989 r. w Sandomierzu, 17 stycznia w katedrze sandomierskiej odbyły się uroczystości pogrzebowe, 21 stycznia 1989 r. został pochowany w rodzinnej parafii Rzeczniowie

Stanowisko pierwszych brytyjskich emergentystów wobec teorii ewolucji

    Get PDF
In the nineteenth century, the theory of evolution was not yet widely accepted and was just beginning to spread in the scientific community, and thus also among British emergentists. The first representatives of British Emergentism were John Stuart Mill and George Henry Lewes. Mill is called the father of this line of thought, and Lewes coined the term emergent based on Mill’s heteropathic effect. The purpose of this article is to show the different approaches of Mill and Lewes to the theory of evolution.W XIX wieku teoria ewolucji nie była jeszcze powszechnie przyjmowana i dopiero upowszechniała się w środowisku naukowym, a tym samym i wśród brytyjskich emergentystów.

1936 brought a lot more than the re-election of president Franklin Delano Roosevelt. It was also a year which brought a broad and radical challenge to the New Deal reform policies. American democracy demonstrated its complexity and unfinishedness. The conflict between FDR and the Supreme Court has many dimensions: institutional – conflict between the government (the president, Congress and the Administration) and the US Supreme Court over the range of powers of each actor; political – regarding the accountability of political elites; socio-economic – regarding the direction of development of American democracy; philosophical – over the meaning of liberty; legal – regarding the separation of powers between the levels of government; personal – between persons and personalities representing divergent visions of power; and historical – reviving the constitutional debates from the early republic. For some, the clash between FDR and the USSC touched the very essence of the representative democracy. After a year, the level of tensions subsided and all parties were scarred, yet the political system as such demonstrated its resilience. Its outcome to these days serves as a pretext for deliberations about the relations between leaders and followers. Events in America may be useful for all countries where the autonomy of the judicial branch of government becomes a political issue.Rok 1936 przyniósł w USA znacznie więcej niż reelekcję prezydenta Franklina Delano Roosevelta. W przestrzeni publicznej zaistniał w skali dotąd niespotykanej ostry konflikt o program reform zwany Nowym Ładem. Amerykańska demokracja zaprezentowała swoją złożoność i niedookreśloność. Konflikt ten miał wiele aspektów: instytucjonalny - spór między rządem (prezydentem, Kongresem i Administracją) a Sądem Najwyższym odnośnie zakresu kompetencji instytucji władzy; polityczny – dotyczący odpowiedzialności elit politycznych przed społeczeństwem; społeczno -ekonomiczny – odnośnie kierunku rozwoju amerykańskiej demokracji; filozoficzny – spór dotyczący rozumienia pojęcia wolności; prawny – dotyczący formalnych relacji między poziomami władzy; personalny między osobowościami i osobistościami reprezentującymi odmienne widzenie władzy; historyczny – przypominający początki republiki i spory o konstytucję.

Dar cesarza Michała, papieskie tkaniny z chrysoclabas i problem sztuki figuratywnej w epoce ikonoklazmu

On Christmas of the year 811, Emperor Michael I Rhangabe solemnly crowned his elder son Theophylact in the church of Hagia Sophia. On this occasion, he offered to the cathedral numerous precious gifts, among which was a set of four curtains embroidered with gold and purple. Sacred images were depicted on them. These textiles did not survive to our times, and are known to us only thanks to the short record in the Theophanes’ Chronicle. However, it is possible to reconstruct their form on the basis of preserved contemporary examples. The practice of donating silks decorated with figural religious motifs to churches is confirmed by the Book of Pontiffs. The source mentions gifts given by popes Hadrian I (772–795), Leo III (795–816), Paschal I (817–824), Gregory IV (827–844) and Leo IV (847–855) to shrines in Rome and Ravenna. The textiles mentioned by the source include both those decorated with ornamental motifs (griffins, crosses) and those adorned with evangelical scenes (Annunciation, Nativity, Entry into Jerusalem, Passion, Ascension, Descent of the Holy Spirit) and images of Christ and saints. The word chrisoclabum (or chrisoclavum), which is repeated in written sources, seems to relate to compositions placed inside medallions, and perhaps also to exceptionally precious appliqués of gold and purple fastened to the textile background.  Already 75 years ago, Wolfgang F. Volbach sought to associate two pieces of silk samits with the Annunciation and Nativity scenes (kept at the Vatican Museo Sacro; initially dated to the 6th c.) with papal gifts from the turn of 8th and 9th c. His hypothesis, accepted by most scholars, has recently been disputed by Anna Muthesius, who suggests a later date for both silks (after 843). Due to this fact, it seems necessary to offer a new analysis and interpretation of both textiles that will rely on the current body of knowledge about the Byzantine art of 8th and 9th c.W Boże Narodzenie roku 811 Michał I Rangabeusz dokonał w Hagii Sofii uroczystej koronacji swojego najstarszego syna, Teofilakta.

In recent years, the situation of people with disabilities in Poland has been attracting ever-growing public attention. Changes in higher education influence university candidates and students with disabilities as well. While necessary infrastructure is operational and functioning, there is still much to be done by the academics and the administration. However, we notice gradually increasing awareness that disability does not have to be a restriction, and it should not definitely be an obstacle to students who want to study. Universities strive to ensure all students have equal opportunities for education and their possibility of participating fully in the life of the academic community, due to a disability, is not anyhow limited or diminished.

Media – edukator i nauczyciel wiary. Ewangelizacja w świecie ekspozycji medialnych

The world of ‘tribal digital users’ known as the ‘multitasking generation’ or ‘generation Z’ makes up its world out of thousands of pieces. This does not suffice if one wants to discover the mystery of man, encounter a culture, discover a great tradition or have faith in a personal God. Some people wrongly assume that it takes just one click or the reading of 140 characters to attain knowledge information, discover the truth or get to the heart of the matter. The purpose of this text is to aid the practical discovery of the principle that, in the final analysis, the media is more of a human victory than a technological one. The use of traditional and modern media may become a means for man to deepen his own awareness and discover signs of the Creator. This kind of competence can be acquired through parental awareness, inspirational teachers, catechists and group animators. They will be inspirational through the experience of their faith in the context of the communicative gains of the latest technologies. True teaching of the faith leads to a knowledge of God and the ability to distinguish good from evil in a contemporary context. A competent teacher of faith reveals the most important values to young people: love, life, family, truth in the slight of the Gospel and does so constantly using a new language and the new tools of communication. Kompetentny nauczyciel wiary odkrywa przed młodym wartości najdonioślejsze: miłość, życie, rodzinę, prawdę w kontekście Ewangelii, a czyni to, niejednokrotnie używając nowego języka i nowych narzędzi przekazu
