Un-Selfies: The Dissolution of Identity in 20th- and 21st- Century Art

    No full text
Delivered as the Distinguished Faculty Honors Lecture at SUU, February 2, 2017. One of the more curious recent identifying features of the anthropocene has been the "selfie" - typically a close-cropped digital photographic portrait image featuring a telltale strain at one shoulder of the subject indicating that the sitter is also the artist and that the camera (a common feature of a "smart"-phone) was held at arm's length in order to effect the work's successful execution. Most often these selfies are intended to be distributed without delay - usually among an improbably large circle of intimate "friends." The selfie's greater purpose, however, can become a topic of bewildered and often irritated speculation among the image's recipients. I want to talk today about the development of the faceless portrait in modem and post-modern art from its beginnings at the end of the 19th century to its current manifestation in the selfie culture of our time - and in what we will herein describe as the phenomenon of the un-selfie, which operates less within the public sector of social media and popular entertainment, and more in the context of the contemporary art scene
