    No full text
Delivered as the Distinguished Faculty Honors Lecture at SUU, January 18, 2018. My remarks today will examine the need for rebuilding public trust in government and provide some concrete steps for doing so. First, I will share my personal concerns about the negative views that many Americans today hold about their government and public officials. Having done this, I will provide some historical background on why public trust is vital to the maintenance of our democratic republic and why we cannot afford to take it for granted. Next, I will examine some of the forces that are currently dividing our nation and how this is placing our republic in peril. Finally, I will discuss why Americans of all political persuasions must begin working together immediately to restore unity within our nation so that the republic remains sound for the next 200 years
