He was a graduate of the Yale Sheffield Scientific School (New Haven, Connecticut, United States) in 1914 and in 1920 he received a degree in mechanical engineering from Yale. Corbett took carillon lessons at Park Avenue Baptist Church (New York, New York, United States). He was a charter member and past president of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America. No full textJohn E. Courter (1941-2010) was a carillonneur, composer, and teacher. He earned music degrees from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) and Michigan State University (East Lansing). He studied at the North Germany Organ Academy (East Friesland). He studied carillon at Michigan State University with Wendell Westcott. In 1961, he took a master class given by Staf Nees (1901-1965). He studied at the Netherlands Carillon School (Amersfoort, Netherlands) with Todd Fair (carillon) and Jaap Zwart, Jr. (composition). He was a Professor of Music, College Organist, and carillonneur at Berea College (Berea, Kentucky, United States). He became a member of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America (GCNA) in 1992. His carillon compositions won prizes in the GCNA Johan Franco Composers’ Competition. He received the University of California - Berkley Medal in 1993 in recognition of his contributions to the carillon world
