    Damaged heron sculpture

    One of the sculptures of a heron on top of the Singing Tower was struck by lightning in July 1929. In August 1929, a light protection system was put in place to prevent this happening again. Pencil markings indicated the shape of the sculpture prior to being damaged

    Arthur Lynds Bigelow (1910-1967) was a carillonneur, carillon designer as well as an educator and published author. Bigelow studied engineering at the University of Pittsburgh before going aboard in 1930 to study at the Royal Carillon School (Mechelen, BE). He was carillonneur of St. Peter’s Church (Leuven, BE) before returning to the United States in 1941. He served as Princeton University’s (Princeton, NJ) carillonneur from 1941 to 1967 and rose to the rank of Associate Professor in Princeton University’s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Bigelow provided bells - many of which he cast himself and then later in collaboration with the Paccard Fonderie de Cloches (Annecy, France) - and built keyboards for many carillons and chimes located in the United States
