No full textA view of the sign and front exterior of Miller's Dutch Kitch'n, located at 3401 14th St W. in Bradenton. Miller's Dutch Kitch'n opened in 1981 after the Miller family moved from their farm in Ohio to Bradenton. The restaurant served traditional Amish food and were well-known for their pies. The restaurant and bakery also contained a gift shop that sold homemade Amish quilts. They briefly closed and underwent renovations in the 1990s, where the building was expanded from 5,300 square feet to 12,300. After 36 years, the Miller family permanently closed the restaurant in April 2018 to focus on their local tech business

No full textA view of the exterior of Manatee Memorial Hospital and the main entrance. Manatee Memorial Hospital, located at 206 2nd Street East in downtown Bradenton, opened in February of 1953 as a public hospital with 100 beds. The hospital began as a concept by the Bradenton Women's Club and other community leaders in 1939. Delayed by World War II, fundraising did not begin until 1947, led by Bert W. Hendrickson. Initially the hospital was called Manatee Veterans Memorial Hospital to honor the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans. In 1963, the state legislature renamed to Manatee Memorial Hospital, dropping the 'Veterans' to avoid confusion, since it was not a Veterans Administration hospital. Today Manatee Memorial Hospital is a leading public hospital of 319 beds with many specialties such as orthopedics and heart care

Longboat Key
No full textThis image depicts Longboat Key looking north from Lido Key. To the left of the image is the Gulf of Mexico and to the right of the image is the Sarasota Bay. In the forefront of the image is the Sands Point Condominium and Longboat Key Golf Club. Archaeological evidence suggests that Longboat Key was utilized for fishing for up to 2000 years by Native Americans. It is believed that the name of the island may stem from the longboats used by Spanish fishermen during the early 1800s. In 1880, the first non-native people settled on Longboat Key and at the northern end of the island a small community developed which was known as Longbeach. By the early 1900s, the island was home to about 20 families and it continued to grow throughout the 20th century. The Town of Longboat Key was officially incorporated in 1955 and the island is part of both Manatee and Sarasota counties. Today Longboat Key is well-known for its beaches and is a popular vacation spot for visitors. This postcard is courtesy of Manatee County Historical Records Library
Dr Willis Harris, 1998 Manatee County Distinguished Citizen
No full textDr. Willis Harris (1914-2009) is congratulated by well-wishers including Vernon DeSear as he was designated Manatee County's Distinguished Citizen. At his death in 2009, he was the longest-serving physician in Manatee County, and was present when more than 3,500 babies were born between 1946 and 1973. He also helped to create Manatee Memorial Hospital in 1953, and volunteered there after retirement
