Bradenton Beach

Bradenton Beach is a community located on Anna Maria Island. Bradenton Beach, originally known as Cortez Beach, became a popular tourist destination in the early 20th century. Its original name stems from its association with the Village of Cortez on the mainland. In 1921, a bridge was built that connected the two locales. However, in the late 1920s, city officials and the local newspaper began using the Bradenton Beach moniker to differentiate the location from Cortez, and the name eventually became widely used. In 1941, Bradenton Beach acquired its first post office and in 1952 it became an incorporated city. Today the town is home to about 1500 permanent residents but also receives many seasonal visitors each year. This postcard is courtesy of Manatee County Historical Records Library
