This image depicts the land between the DeSoto and Green Bridges in Downtown Bradenton which was the result of a 1960s Manatee River dredging project by Mayor Sterling Hall. The area has been nicknamed for several decades "the Sandpile." In the foreground of the image, the buildings from left to right are River Yacht & Racquet Club Condominiums, the Courtyard by Mariott Hotel, which was originally known as Holiday Inn Riverfront, and the Plaza Del Rio Office Center, all of which opened in the mid-1980s. To the far left of the image just past the Green Bridge are the Twin Dolphin Marina and the 1927 Memorial Pier, which originally housed the Bradenton Chamber of Commerce and is now home to Pier 22 restaurant.
